Nel destino di quella piccola isola e dei suoi abitanti Orhan Pamuk ha ricreato un mondo, parlando al nostro presente con una forza e un'intensità che sono quelle della grande letteratura. Nell'aprile del 1901 un piroscafo si avvicina silenzioso all'isola di Mingher, «perla del Mediterraneo orientale». Dall'imbarcazione scendono due persone: il dottor Bonkowski – il maggior specialista di malattie infettive dell'Impero ottomano – e il suo assistente. Bonkowski è lì per conto del sultano: deve indagare su un nemico invisibile ma mortale, che rischia di mettere in ginocchio un Impero già da molti definito il «grande malato d'Europa» e innescare così una reazione a catena nei delicatissimi equilibri continentali. Sull'isola di Mingher, si dice, c'è la peste. Il morbo viene rapidamente confermato, ma imporre le corrette misure sanitarie rappresenta la vera sfida, soprattutto quando le esigenze della scienza e della medicina più nuova si scontrano con le credenze religiose. In quest'isola multiculturale dove musulmani e cristiani ortodossi cercano di convivere pacificamente, la malattia funge da acceleratore delle tensioni sociali e non solo: poco dopo aver parlato con il governatore e chiesto che venga imposta la quarantena, il corpo del dottor Bonkowski viene trovato senza vita in un vicolo. In un drammatico crescendo la peste dilaga, spingendo le autorità a rafforzare le misure di contenimento: queste però aumentano le frizioni tra le varie identità dell'isola (e dell'Impero), tra chi le asseconda e chi nega l'esistenza stessa della malattia, o l'efficacia della quarantena, gettando la comunità nelle tenebre di una notte non soltanto sanitaria. "Le notti della peste" è un'opera-mondo grandiosa, universale, attraversata da echi di Tolstoj, di Manzoni, del Conrad di Nostromo, di Camus. Romanzo storico e allegorico (tra le righe si legge la deriva di ogni nazionalismo verso l'autocrazia dell'uomo forte), brulicante di personaggi e di storie, di guerre, amori e immortali tensioni etiche. In cui il particolare – le esistenze dei singoli individui travolti dalla Storia – si apre all'universale – il rapporto tra paura e potere, tra vita e destini generali, tra fede e ragione, tra modernità e tradizione.

Le conseguenze della disfatta furono importanti: gli ottomani perdettero metà dei loro territori europei e gli Asburgo dirottarono i loro interessi verso i Balcani. Quell'ultimo scontro fra Croce e Mezzaluna avviò in sostanza un assetto europeo destinato a durare fino al cataclisma della Grande Guerra. Questo volume è una circostanziata descrizione dell'assedio di Vienna, ricostruito nelle sue premesse e conseguenze generali ma soprattutto seguito sul campo, giorno per giorno, nel concreto svolgersi dello scontro.

Gloire de la maison de Coligny, il suivit la fortune du prince de Condé et prit part à sa révolte. Il devint, par la suite, son ennemi irréconciliable et fit la paix avec la cour. Envoyé comme lieutenant général en Hongrie au secours de l'empereur contre les Turcs, il contribua puissamment à la victoire de Saint-Gothard en 1664. 2- Première édition des Mémoires de Philippe le Valois, marquis de Villette (1632-1707). Rarissime première édition française, dans la traduction de François de Belleforest, "plus rare et plus recherchée que l'édition latine originale publiée à Bâle la même année" (Blackmer). Cet ouvrage demeure l’une des sources contemporaines fondamentales sur le conflit qui opposa, de 1570 à 1573, l'Empire ottoman à la République de Venise appuyée par la Sainte-Ligue, sur l’histoire de la conquête Chypre (1570-1571) par les Turcs et sur les relations entre l’Empire ottoman et Venise, l’auteur ayant été un protagoniste direct des événements et ayant eu accès à des documents inédits et de première main. Important représentant de l’historiographie humaniste, Pietro Bizzari (1530-1584) se convertit très tôt au protestantisme et quitta Venise. Edition originale de cet ouvrage, qui exerça une influence décisive sur la philosophie politique de son temps, de Botero à Montaigne auquel il a fourni la matière à plusieurs additions aux "Essais". "René de Lucinge, ambassadeur du duc de Savoie à la cour d'Henri III (1585-1588), puis signataire du traité de Lyon en 1601, rédige, au plus fort de la guerre des trois Henri et un an avant la "Ragion di Stato" (1589) de Giovanni Botero, [cet] ouvrage politique majeur. Il élabore une théorie de la conservation des Etats en réponse aux événements qui ravagent le royaume de France et dont il est un témoin privilégié: les guerres de religion. Alors qu'il tente de dessiner les contours d'une " bonne raison d'Etat ", il perçoit dans le système politique ottoman des éléments nécessaires à la conservation et à l'accroissement de la puissance de l'Etat. S'il fait de cet Empire un modèle concurrentiel des Romains, il n'en forme pas moins le projet d'une union de l'Europe chrétienne contre le Turc. Cette croisade doit pacifier la chrétienté et unir les intérêts divergents. Lucinge, après Machiavel et avant Botero, reconnaît que seul l'intérêt dicte la conduite des princes" (G. "For the Greeks, the fight for independence from the Ottoman Empire was a cruel business, and its consequences far-reaching. Today's Greece is much more the child of that struggle than it is of the Classical period we know so much better. Because of Ottoman oppression and its brutal end, hostility to Turkey still smoulders, as does suspicion that foreign powers manipulate Greece for their own ends. For much of the war the Greek cause looked hopeless. The rebels could call only on lightly armed merchant ships and a long tradition of brigandage, which seemed no match for a formidable empire. Foreign philhellenes joined the Greek cause but foreign governments cared less for the Greeks than for the stability of Europe, hard-won by Napoleon's defeat. Nevertheless the Greeks won victories at sea, largely due to their use of terrifying fireships, and on land under the leadership of the charismatic Kolokotroms. Civil war then broke out among the Greeks, and for a time Kolokotroms swapped his tent for a prison cell. But support for Greece was growing, as all Europe was moved by Turkish massacres, by the death of Byron, most famous philhellene of all, and by the bloody invasion of the Peloponnese by Ottoman troops brought in by sea from Egypt. The governments of Europe now demanded an end to the fighting, and an allied fleet under Admiral Codrington sailed to meet the Ottoman navy at Navarino Bay. Nervous fingers fired inevitable shots, sixty Turkish ships were sent to the sea bed, and Greek freedom was finally assured.
