‎Die Laodikeiakirche. Das Christentum im Lykostal.‎

‎New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In German. 106 p., color ills.

‎New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In French. 106 p., color ills.

Journey to the center of the East, 1850-1950. 100 years of travelers in Istanbul from Pierre de Gigord Collection.= Dogu'nun merkezine seyahat, 1850-1950. Pierre de Gigord Koleksiyonu'ndan Istanbul'da gezginlerin 100 yili. [Exhibition catalogue]. Coordinated by Zeynep Ögel, Erkan Bora, Gülru Tanman. This exhibition tells the tale of the Istanbul-centred travels of curious Westerners, who ventured out to the East from the 18th century onwards. Geographers, archaeologists, linguists, architects, botanist and clergymen all travelled across the East from the late 18th until the mid-19th century researching their particular interests. After the Crimean War, the expedition-oriented travel that was so popular until the 1850s was replaced by a different kind of travel. The objective was no longer information gathering, but tourism. Based on materials selected from the vast collection of Pierre de Gigord, one of the leading collectors of Ottoman-era photographs and ephemera, this exhibition sheds light on the early years of mass tourism that replaced individual journeys of discovery and transformed travel culture.‎

‎Laodikeia kilisesi. Lykos Vadisi'nde Hiristiyanlik.‎

‎New English Paperback. PRoy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 106 p., color ills. Since 2003 excavations and restoration work at Laodikeia on the Lykos have been Undertaken by the author on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Pamukkale University. The work conducted has shown that the history of Laodikeia, which is located within the borders of Eskihisar, Goncali and Bozburun neighbourhoods (former villages) and surrounded by rivers, namely Asopos, Kadmos, and Lykos, on three sides 6 km the north of Denizli, goes back to 5500s BC, not to the third century BC as was formerly thought. The city experienced numerous earthquakes, some very devastating, but always rebuilt; however, the earthquake in the reign of Focas (r. 602-610) razed her to the ground; the site was abandoned and the survivors settled at Kaleig of Denizli and Hisarkoy on the northern foots of Salbakos (Babadag). The city of Laodikeia had her high times during the Roman Imperial period and Late Antiquity when Christianity spread from the fourth to the sixth century. As the city was one of the first Seven Churches she became a metropolitan see quite early. Evidence uncovered indicates that the lifestyle of the city changed with Christianity and the city became a venue of pilgrimage as of the fourth century. With the spread of churches as architectural monuments across the city it is observed that some rooms in the houses with peristyle courts were converted to oratories building up a tradition of family chapels. This short work first tells briefly about the spread of Christianity in the region and churches in the city. This book's main focus is the Church of Laodikeia uncovered in 2010; therefore, you will find detailed information on its architecture, fountains, pastophoria, synthronon, ambo, bema, altar, baptistery and the corridor leading to it, frescoes, opus sectile flooring, and mosaics and the dating based on excavation finds. Furthermore, the protective roof project and the steel-and-glass catwalk for visitors are presented comprehensively.‎

‎Reflections of Ancient Anatolian society in archaeology from Neolithic village communities to EBA towns and polities.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 640 p. This book provides students of Anatolian archaeology with a revised and detailed assessment of cultural, social, economic, political, and industrial evolution in prehistoric and preliterate Anatolia. The six principal cultural periods, as discussed in Chapters 2 to 7, constitute a time span extending third millennium BC. Chapter 1 begins with a short description of the early Holocene landscape, climate, flora, and fauna and briefly touches on the Paleolithic and Epipaleolithic ancestry of Neolithic Anatolian society, while also highlighting some of the difficulties encountered in investigating and reconstructing the lives of Anatolian hunter-gatherers and agro-pastoralists, especially th.‎

‎Mosaics of Zeugma.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Oblong large 8vo. (23 x 23 cm). In English. 63 p., 40 color plates. "The discovery and rescue of the mosaics of Zeugma, the ancient Greco-Roman crossing point on the Euphrates, is regarded as the most important recent archaeological event. The book comprises some of the pavements on display in Gaziantep Museum, Gaziantep, Turkey. Zeugma, like the rest of the region was destroyed by the Sassanian king Shapur I in 256, when he raided the eastern lands of the Roman empire. Although the town showed some recovery in the early Byzantine period, and still served as a crossing, this was not comparable with its ancient glory. Thus it is not surprising that while the earliest of the mosaics discovered at Zeugma dates from the late first century CE, the latest belong to the period before the destruction. Almost all of the damage seen in the recovered mosaics, especially in the parts made of glass mosaic cubes, is the result of the fire which accompanied the Sassanian sack of 256. Research has shown that the tesserae of these mosaics were mostly produced from the coloured stone collected from the banks of the Euphrates, and supplemented by glass tesserae for missing hues such as dark green, orange, or light blue.".‎

‎Ancient theaters of Anatolia. Photographs by Ahmet Ertug.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. Oblong folio. (35 x 48 cm). In English. 205 p., color photographs. Ancient theaters of Anatolia. Photographs by Ahmet Ertug. Ertug & Kocabiyik Publications presents its latest book Ancient Theaters of Anatolia. Penned by R.R.R Smith, Lincoln Professor of Classical Archaeology and Art at Oxford University, and Director of the Aphrodisias Excavations in Turkey, the book features stunning photographs of Ahmet Ertug. Many of the extraordinary images were photographed with an 8 x 10 inch large-format camera, and show these well-preserved theaters in exceptional detail. The book starts with an introduction on the theater in classical antiquity, and then describes sixteen outstanding theatres individually. This is probably the first time that such combined high-level academic and photographic documentation has been devoted to the extraordinary legacy of theater building in Anatolia. The book is 205 pages long, in landscape format, with a page size of 33 x 46 cm and 174 color plates, showing both details and panoramic views. Striking photographs of many of the high-quality statues and friezes that decorated the theaters are also included in the book. By the second century AD, at the height of the long peace enforced by Rome, most self-respecting ancient cities in the Mediterranean region had a theatre building. Most of the theaters presented in this book belong to, or were re-conditioned in this period. Most survive in their second-century form but have long archaeological histories of re-design and addition that stretch back to the Hellenistic period. Theaters were among the largest, most imposing structures in ancient cities. Their capacity varied greatly, from 2,000 to 20,000, but most boasted a tall monumental stage-building that reared up from the surrounding cityscape - with austere masonry on the outside and majestic tiers of columns inside. Many are astonishingly well-preserved. 'Theater' has the double sense of both an institution and a building. Indeed, drama was a developed practice long before it had the building form we know and recognize as a theatre. Drama grew out of choral performance at religious festivals in honor of Dionysos, and evolved into the exciting new medium of staged tragedy and comedy. Dramatic plays soon came to share the theater first with the citizen assembly, and then under the Roman empire, with arena games - the highly popular gladiator combats and wild-beast hunts mounted in honor of the emperor. Theater building underwent a long evolution, from an irregular hillside auditorium to a proper architectural design in the Greek period, and then to a new, fully integrated form in the Roman period. The interplay of traditional Hellenistic design and new Roman design was one of the main aspects of theatre building in Anatolia in the first and second centuries AD. Many of the theaters in this book, often those in more remote locations (Sagalassos, Selge, and Termessos), remained as they had been left at the end of antiquity - unoccupied, with collapsed stage building and well-preserved auditorium, partly covered only by vegetation and fallen masonry. They present remarkable ruinscapes that are vivid testimony to antiquity's deep-rooted theater culture and to the great durability of ancient building techniques. The theatre remained one of the most vibrant institutions of the eastern provinces under the Roman empire, especially in the prosperous cities of western Anatolia. More than 100 ancient theaters are known within modern Turkey. Their distribution follows the pattern of urbanism in the Roman period. Most are found in the cities of the Aegean and south coast, and the best-preserved are in the wealthy Roman provinces of Asia and Lycia-Pamphylia. The theatre had different trajectories and building histories through the first and second centuries AD in response to Roman design, changing functions, and intercity competition. Some cities with well-design‎

"'Yadigar-i Istanbul', has been selected among 35.535 photographs from 911 photograph albums in the library of Yildiz Palace. The oldest of these albums date back to the year 1857. The photograph albums of Yildiz Palace entirely given to Istanbul University in 1924 at the behest of Ataturk are among the world's most remarkable photography collections. Perspectives of the photographers of that period have been reflected while in the selection of photographs for "Yadigar-i Istanbul". Those who see the "Yadigar-i Istanbul photos will realize the early beauties of Istanbul as well as the great changes it has undergone. As a result of the study made on 911 albums containing 35.535 photographs and on the photographers of the albums, almost 370 photographer names emerged. In "Yadigar-i Istanbul, the names of these photographers and their photograph albums are also available. Cilt 2: Yenikapi batiklarinin ahsaplari. Salvage excavations conducted at Yenikapi within the frame of Marmaray and Metro projects brought to light the Theodosian Harbour and rare archaeological remains. The new finds that extended Istanbul's history to 8000 BP include an assembly of 37 shipwrecks dated to the fifth through eleventh centuries AD. This book deals with the genus-species identifications of 27 shipwrecks unearthed by Istanbul Archaeological Museums Directorate and processed by the Division of Conservation of Marine Archaeological Objects, Faculty of Letters, Istanbul University. More than 3000 samples were analysed by Prof. Dr. Ünal Akkemik of Istanbul University's Faculty of Forestry. All the shipwrecks uncovered belong to the Byzantine period; however, those of the fifth-seventh centuries were built with coniferous trees like cypress and pine whereas those of the ninth-eleventh centuries were built with broad-leaved trees like oak and chestnut. Ships of the seventh-ninth centuries, on the other hand, reflect a mixture of both tree groups. In overall, the wood identifications indicate a change from the coniferous trees to broad-leaved trees in the time span of fifth to eleventh centuries. Study of the 27 wrecks has not only cast light onto the shipbuilding techniques of the Byzantine period but also produced an invaluable database revealing the change in woods used.‎

In Russian. 214, [2] p., classical b/w diagrams. First Edition. Extremey rare. Matç-revans: Alehin - Euwe. Na pervenstvo mira, (Oktyabr - Dekayabr, 1937 r.). The 1937 World Chess Championship was played between Max Euwe and Alexander Alekhine in the Netherlands from October 5 to December 4, 1937. Alekhine regained his title. This was the last "Imperial" World Championship where the world champion had control of the title and could set match conditions; Alekhine died in 1946 and FIDE stepped in to take control of the World Championship. Alexander Alekhine challenged Max Euwe to a rematch, and Euwe agreed to the challenge and the conditions. From October to December in 1937 the match was conducted, again in the Netherlands. If Alekhine had made the mistake of underestimating Euwe in 1935, he certainly did not underestimate him this time. Euwe won the first game with the white pieces, but in the end Alekhine's resolve (perhaps fueled by the 1935 defeat) proved to be too much for the Dutch Champion. After 25 games, with a score of +10 -4 =11, Alekhine gained the title for the second time. This was Alekhine's final title match. He held the title of World Chess Champion until his death in 1946. Mikhail Moiseyevich Botvinnik, (1911-1995) was a Soviet and Russian International Grandmaster and three-time World Chess Champion, widely considered one of the greatest chess players of all time. Working as an electrical engineer and computer scientist at the same time, he was one of the very few professional chess players who achieved distinction in another career while playing top-class competitive chess. He was also a pioneer of computer chess. Botvinnik was the first world-class player to develop within the Soviet Union, putting him under political pressure but also giving him considerable influence within Soviet chess. From time to time he was accused of using that influence to his own advantage, but the evidence is unclear and some suggest he resisted attempts by Soviet officials to intimidate some of his rivals. Botvinnik also played a major role in the organization of chess, making a significant contribution to the design of the World Chess Championship system after World War II and becoming a leading member of the coaching system that enabled the Soviet Union to dominate top-class chess during that time. His famous pupils include World Champions Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik.‎

Projecting the nation: European states in the 1920s and 1930s.= Ulusu tasarlamak: 1920'ler ve 1930'larda Avrupa devletleri. [Exhibition catalogue]. At a time when the boundaries of Europe and the future of European modernity are contested once again in the face of Turkey's candidacy to the European Union, the publication Projecting the Nation offers a critical reflection on the recent past of Europe. Focusing on the multiple and competing modernities of the 1920s and 1930s, a period which also saw the dawn of Turkish modernity, the exhibition explores how nations were invented and shaped by state power. In the age of mass politics, visual political culture - itself a product of modern technology - took on a fundamental role in creating and molding mass consensus. For European states, in this era of competing ideologies and exacerbated nationalism, self-exhibition was no longer restricted to a message of authority and legitimacy targeting the cultural elite. It now became a crucial and novel element of statecraft, a cultural offensive grounded in propaganda, and a source of self-legitimation for political power. In all circumstances, the ultimate stake was control over mass culture. Highlighting strong instances of self-exhibition in the Soviet Union, Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, Kemalist Turkey, interwar France and conflict-torn Spain, Projecting the Nation presents a cross-territorial examination of the similarities, differences and borrowings of forms of modernity unbound.
