‎The forgotten kingdom: Archaeology and photography at Ancient Alalakh.= Unutulmus krallik: Antik Alalah'ta arkeoloji ve fotograf.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 280 p., color and b/w ills. "The Forgotten Kingdom" offers a comparative look at the history of archaeology, archaeological photography and the community landscape from the early twentieth to twenty-first centuries by presenting a selection of photographs from the excavations conducted at Tell Atchana, ancient Alalakh, both in the 1930-40s and the present day. The site is located along the major branch of the Orontes River in the Amuq Valley of Hatay, near present-day Antakya in southern Turkey. It is the largest Middle and Late Bronze Age settlement in the region and was the capital of the Kingdom of Mukish in the second millennium BC.‎

‎Restoration and Conservation Project of Urartian Jewellery Collection of Rezan Has Museum.= Rezan Has Müzesi Urartu Takilari Restorasyon ve Konservasyon Projesi.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. 100 p., color ills. Jewelleries such as pectorals (breastplate), medallions, beads, amulets, neck rings, ornamental pins, fibulae, armlets, bracelets, rings and furthermore, the most comprehensive Urartian belt collection of Turkey with approximately 70 belts will reveal the mysterious thoughts, religious beliefs and traditions of the Urartian society. Among the most important factors in the development of the Urartian art of jewellery is the presence of rich mineral deposits of Eastern Anatolia and the profitable use of these deposits by the Urartian jewellery masters. Gold, silver, lead, iron and particularly copper deposits in the region were effectively mined for the first time by the Urartians. With the mission and vision it has upheld since its inauguration, Rezan Has Museum has arduously strived to preserve the historic assets of our land, which has been home to countless civilizations, and to ensure that they are transmitted to future generations. Our most important mission is to safeguard the Museum's jewellery collection of the Urartian civilization, which reigned over Anatolia for 250 years and to entrust future generations with a collection preserved at least its present condition. Each new study on these treasures to be handed down from one generation to the next will shed light not only upon our past but upon our future as well.".‎

‎Antioch mosaics. A corpus.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. Large 4to. (32 x 28 cm). In English. 320 p., color ills. "The book includes the most important Antioch mosaic pavements displayed in the Hatay Archaeological Museum in Antakya, Turkey, seventeen different institutions in the USA and the Louvre. The mosaics were brought to light in and around Antioch on the Orontes (Antakya), Seleucia Pieria (Çevlik) and Daphne (Defne) in 1932-37. As a group, the Antioch mosaics demonstrate a remarkable continuity with the Hellenistic artistic tradition as seen in the preservation of classical subjects and decorative devices, such as the illusionistic treatment of the inhabited vine scrolls or ribbon borders. The common use of multiple borders to frame figural panels at Antioch is also reminiscent of the framing of Hellenistic emble-mata, or portable panels prepared in workshops and then inserted at the sites. The three-dimensional treatment of interiors and landscapes, the naturalistic representation of the human anatomy, and the variety of colors employed for the Antiochene compositions, indicate a dependence on painting styles. Such skill in the production of stone 'paintings' effectively denies the solidity of the floor and tricks the eye of the viewer, not to mention their physical relationship to the room itself. Finds from nearby sites (Apamea, Zeugma, Shahba-Philippopolis, and Palmyra) are similarly 'traditional' and point to the existence of a 'school' of eastern art beyond that of the Antiochene workshops. Such illusionism reaches the height of fashion during the Severan period in Antioch.".‎

‎Orientalism in Polish art.= Polonya sanatinda Oryantalizm. [Exhibition catalogue]. 24 October 2014 - 18 January 2015, Pera Museum.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 360 p., color and b/w ills. The exhibition highlights the orientalist trend in Polish painting, as well as drawings and graphic arts. The works in the exhibition cover a wide period from the 17th to the early 19th centuries. Among others, the exhibition includes drawings by Christian Kamsetzer of his Turkish travels, as well as oriental scenes by artists like Zmurko and Brandt. The artworks exemplify topics related to the Ottoman world, and to a lesser extent, the Near East and North African regions. One section of the exhibition is dedicated to Stanislaw Chlebowski, the court artist of Sultan Abdülaziz. Works by other artists who had visited Turkey, among them Jan Matejko, Waclaw Pawliszak, Jan Ciaglinski, and Jacek Malczewski, are also included. Selected from the collections of Polish institutions ranging from the National Museums in Warsaw, Kraków, Poznan, and Wroclaw, the University Library in Warsaw, to Lazienki Palace Museum, the exhibition brings together approximately 190 works. The apogee of Orientalism, which refers to a cultural current in Europe centred on an interest in the cultures of the East manifesting itself in art, architecture, music, literature, and the theatre, arrived in the 19th century, when a distinct Orientalist current sprang forth from academic painting, inspired first and foremost by the cultures of the Islamic countries of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as of Moorish Spain. In the specific case of Poland, interest in the Orient goes back to medieval times; a natural result of her geographic location, which rendered Poland particularly susceptible to influences from the East. To a large extent, this period in Polish history was defined by successive wars with the Ottomans, and it left an indelible trace in culture. A variety of equestrian types, generic skirmishes and great historic battles were depicted many times by various skilled artists, as well as Oriental characters, landscapes, and genre scenes -first and foremost of the harem. The latter subject matter, popular among audiences, was often taken up by painters who had never been to the East themselves. Exhibition catalogue presents works by the artists among them Jan Matejko, Waclaw Pawliszak, Jan Ciaglinski, Jacek Malczewski, and especially Stanislaw Chlebowski, the court artist of Sultan Abdülaziz, are included, and also sheds light on the artistic influences of Poland's cultural interaction with the East, different from the Western Orientalist approach, through history, diplomacy, battles and travellers.‎

‎Herakleia on the Latmos. City and environment. A Carian Mountain landscape.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21,5 x 12 cm). In English. 262 p., color and b/w ills. Our Archaeological guides are written by well-know archaeologists in the hope that they might evoke the spirit of these sites for anyone interested in the remains of Anatolian civilizations. Illustrated with beautiful photographs, equipped with helpful plans and drawings, they are essential resources for travelers in Turkey. 'Who crosses the area of the Maeander, is at his east side threatened by the dark zig zag top of the Latmos, a granite mountain created by eruptions.Inhospitable and poor, this mountain, separated from the thoroughfare by a lake, has always been the most desolate area of the region. In the unparalleled wildness of jumbled rocks, the Latmos is one of the greatest nature experiences a traveller can be granted.' (M. Schede,1936). In this mountain region, which was so aptly described in his time by M. Schede, in the past years numerous, largely unkown settlement traces have been found, which are decisively characterised by the rock landscape of the Latmos. Mount Latmos was one of the sacred mountains of Anatolia; its top was the residence place of the highest god, the Weather God. Among the numerous recent discoveries the Prehistoric rock paintings with their unique imagery are undoubtedly the most important. In the Karadere Cave, presumably the central sanctuary of the Weather God, even the modern visitor becomes aware of the connection between the rock paintings and the mountain top. Dr. Anneliese Peschlow-Bindokat, scientific researcher at the German Archaeological Institute- Berlin (DAI), has been the director of the Latmos Project for more than 20 yeras. ‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 334 p., color and b/w ills. Architect of Sultan Abdulmecid: William James Smith.= Sultan Abdulmecid'in bir mimari: William James Smith. An English architect William James Smith had worked in Istanbul from 1842 to 1856, a most politically influential period for the British Empire. Smith, after his appointment to the prestigious project for the new Istanbul Embassy Building of United Kingdom, whose conceptual design was probably by renowned architect Sir Charles Barry, had attained the interest and trust of Ottoman statesmen. Consequently he was assigned to realise a number of important architectural projects contributing to the modernization of Ottoman Architecture. Some of the Smith¿s important works for the Ottoman Porte are: A military hospital [Gumussuyu Askeri Hastanesi], a naval hospital, a school of medicine later known as Mecidiye Kislasi then Taskisla, a part of the Selimiye Barracks, a Glass Pavilion in Dolmabahce Palace and Tophane Imperial Kiosk [Tophane Kasri] for Sultan Abdulmecid; a building for the Board of Trade, renovation of the Naum Theatre. His commissions for so many important buildings, in spite of the presence of the notable architects, namely Balyan and Fossati, is a proof of Sultan¿s appreciation of Smith¿s works. Smith worked for both the British Empire and the Ottoman Sultan for a considerable number of grand scale projects. Being Smith¿s first work of grand scale, Taskisla has had a major role in the history of the Ottoman Empire and Istanbul in addition to its own interesting construction history.‎

‎The history of the church diplomacy in Turkey.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 152 p. The history of the church diplomacy in Turkey. As a result of the hostility of the Third French Republic which endured from 1870 to 1940, many religious orders were disbanded in France and few orders could survive because of the governmental pressure. A diplomatic crisis broke out between the Holy See and France. The French ambassador to Rome was recalled and the Papal Nuncio to France was expelled. This crisis affected also the strength of France in Orient, who was the Protector of the Latin Catholics and in a wide coverage, all the Catholic subjects. During the sultanate of Abdülhamid II, the role of the Apostolic Delegate (representative of the Pope before the diplomatic relations started) was enhanced in front of the Sublime Porte. Because of this diplomatic crisis between the Holy See and France, there have been serious diplomatic conflicts between the Apostolic Delegate in Istanbul and French ambassadors. It is possible to read these conflicts through the diplomatic archives and correspondences, especially through the recently published documents, which are part of the Vatican Secret Archives. During the pontificate of Pope John XXIII in 1960, the diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Turkey started by the appointment of a Turkish Ambassador to the Holy See and an Apostolic Nuncio to Ankara. This project is aiming to focus on the challenge of power between France and the Holy See in front of the Sublime Porte for keeping the right of representing and protecting the Catholic Subjects in the 19th and 20th centuries, including the establishment and development of the French Protectorate in the Ottoman lands, its abolishment and the diplomatic attempts of Apostolic Delegates for being recognized by the Turkish authorities as the representative of the Pope for Catholic subjects, until the reciprocal appointment of ambassadors in 1960.‎

‎Anatolian travels 19th century.= Périples Anatoliens XIXe siècle.= Anadolu seyahatleri, 19. yüzyil.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English, French, and Turkish. 267 p., ills. Anatolian travels 19th century.= Périples Anatoliens XIXe siècle.= Anadolu seyahatleri, 19. yüzyil. This exhibition is the second phase of a series of exhibitions dedicated to the eastern routes of travelers. The series began with "Smyrna in the 18th and 19th Centuries: A Western Perspective", organized at the Arkas Art Center in 2013. The first exhibition looked at Izmir as a beginning point of the journey by exhibiting works and documents that were left behind by travelers, while this exhibition foregrounds the scientific missions of the French, looking at Anatolia as seen by Western travelers beginning their journey in Izmir. This exhibition looks at the information gathered from travel books, documents, photographs, etchings, and portraits to offer a comparative perspective on 19th century Anatolia¿s social, economic, and cultural structure. The exhibition¿s perspective is critically distant to the Orientalist viewpoint that betrayed the East for the sake of aesthetic and cultural goals; the aim is to prioritize the contributions of scientific expeditions to show the reality of the East. The expedition route begins in Izmir and goes through Western Anatolia, the Mediterranean, Eastern Anatolia, Troy, Bursa, Istanbul, Ankara, and the Black Sea region‎

‎History from below: A tribute in memory of Donald Quataert.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. Large 8vo. (29 x 14 cm). In English. 730 p., ills. A very heavy volume. Donald Quataert was, in narrow terms, an Ottoman labour historian and in wider terms, an economic historian of the late Ottoman Empire. The articles in this book are distributed across topics that Quataert worked on throughout his academic life. An article takes up the topic of his thesis on "Famine in Turkey" that he prepared whilst still a master's student at Harvard University under the guidance of Stanford J. Shaw, another contribution responds to his final work on Zonguldak mine workers. Most, however, have some relationship to the 19th century Ottoman economy, Quataert's particular field of expertise. Of the 33 authors who have contributed the 32 academic articles that make up this book, 17 were students at Binghamton. Eleven of them wrote their theses under Donald Quataert. There are 10 memorial pieces in this book. Quataert's work fell squarely within the research agenda of history from below, and the people he worked on were, in Hobsbawm's words, "the sort of people whose names are usually unknown to anyone except their family and neighbours," and as a result, the title of this book is History from Below. History from below: A tribute in memory of Donald Quataert. Donald Quataert was a remarkable person, a warm, enriching, and moral presence in our field; his combination of good humor and clarity was inimitable. We shared much over the years, including oncological tales. When he told me six years ago of the aggressive treatment he had undertaken he told me, with a smile and relief, that he felt had five more years in which to finish his projects. As in so many things, Don was right. What a generous spirit Don Quataert was! He was genuinely interested in young scholars and always gracious in celebrating the work of others. He was warm, funny, and always intellectually engaged. We will truly miss him. Donald was a generous mentor to young scholars. I remember his encouragement during my first months in the Basbakanlik Arsivi so many years ago. He was a great colleague: thoughtful, critical, enthusiastic, and clear-minded and articulate in his ideas. Donald will be very much missed, and we are grateful to him for giving so much of himself while among us, and for leaving such a rich legacy to be studied by us and the students to come.‎
