Halil Inalcik, Bilkent University. This book provides a fresh interpretation of the historical relations between these two important powers and also Turkey-Europe relations. In the foreword, Halil INALCIK, a prominent global historian, underlines the joint Ottoman-Dutch role in shaping the European and the World history. In the following chapter, Levent KIRVAL focuses on the history of the economic and political relations between Turkey and the European powers, and he particularly focuses on the economic and cultural interactions between the Turks and the Europeans. Subsequently, Bülent ARI, first gives brief information about the phases of Dutch revolt which started in 1567 against the Spanish oppression and then evaluates the political atmosphere of the period and the conflicts between the European states. Next, Mustafa GÜLEC evaluates the interpretations of various scholars concerning the early Ottoman-Dutch relations and gives an overall atmosphere of the commercial relations of individual entrepreneurs before the grant of Dutch capitulations. Followingly, Mehmet BULUT focuses on the commercial activities in the Mediterranean in the 17th and 18th century. This study is about market gardens and their gardeners, which were a distinctive part of Ottoman Istanbul until recently. It draws on first and second-hand sources to examine the locations, physical features, and property structures of market gardens together with those who worked in there and how they were organized. Moreover, the study reveals the role and importance of market gardens in the provisioning of the city. Based on archival material, the study describes the urban fabric, the labor structure, and migration with help of visualdata. Although the market gardens of Istanbul played an important role in the provisioning of the city, shaped its urban landscape, and provided job opportunities for migrant laborers, they have not received the attention they deserve in Ottoman studies. Thus, she embarked on a mysterious journey to explore her grandfather Dr. Kilisli Rifat's life.Her grandparents, Dr. Kilisli Rifat, a well-known medical doctor, author, bureaucrat and professor, and his wife Nazire, the daughter of an Ottoman pasha, were subjects of the multicultural Ottoman Empire. Then they became Turks, 'citizens' of the Republic of Turkey. How did they adapt to becoming citizens of a unitary nation-state with a reconstructed history, national myths and identity? How did they survive the destruction of a vast empire, the wars, and the devastation? Kardam found out that we are links in a chain of generations, unconsciously affected by their suffering or unfinished business, until we acknowledge the past. And her search resulted in surprising discoveries that led to questioning her own identity.

The study of ijazah tradition, its history and its impact is somehow neglected by both Muslim and non-Muslim researchers and scholars alike. This significantly unique tradition of the Muslim educational system has a long history as it emerged and developed parallel to Islamic education itself, and was in practice for more than a millennium. However, after adapting the new educational system during the late 19th century and throughout 20th century until the present, the tradition of granting ijazah drastically began to decline and to extent became a part of history as it was practised among countable scholars, who express their will to keep this distinctive Muslim tradition alive. During the 3rd century of Hijrah/9th century of C.E., this tradition had a strong impact to the higher learning institutions of Europe, where it is believed that granting diploma/license was the product of the Muslim tradition ofijazah, but in terms of the form and content the former differed completely from the latter. Besides the central regions of the Muslim world, the ijazah system appeared and practised extensively in the periphery, where this can be clearly seen in the regions of Southeast Asia and Southeast Europe. Though modern-day diploma replaced ijazah, this practice is still alive in certain parts of these regions; however, it is not recognised "officially" by the government higher learning institutions. Up to this moment, this research managed to interview and discuss with number of 'ulama who have been granted ijazah from their preceding scholars from various countries of the Balkans.

Prince Ali Vâsib (known in Turkish as 'Ali Vâsib Efendi' - or, using his Turkish surname, as 'Ali Vâsib Osmanoglu') was born in the Çiragan Palace, on the shores of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, in 1903. His memoirs deal with the life and times of the Ottoman Imperial family during the last years of the Ottoman Sultanate, as well as with his life during his enforced exile in Hungary, France and Egypt. While in Istanbul he witnessed the First World War, the abolition of the Sultanate in 1923 and then that of the Caliphate in 1924, at which time he was exiled along with the rest of the Imperial family. He was finally allowed to return to his homeland in 1974, after half a century in exile. Ali Vâsib Efendi is the only Ottoman Imperial Prince to have written his memoirs, and they give a unique insight into the people and politics of his day. H.I.H. Prince Ali Vâsib, the great-grandson of Sultan Murad V, was at various times in the presence of the last four Ottoman Sultans as well as the last Caliph. He personally knew the leading figures of the time - such as Enver Pasha. He was a witness to key events in Ottoman history during the last days of the Empire. He lived through the occupation of Istanbul by the Allies - the Ottoman court's most difficult period - and then the exile of the Ottoman Dynasty in 1924.
