In ancient literature the Lydians are frequently mentioned as one of the distinguished peoples of western Anatolia in about the middle of the first millennium BCE and they ruled, although for a relatively short period of some hundred and fifty years, from the Aegean shore to the great curve of the Halys. The scribes of the Old Testament knew and included the Lydians in the Table of the Nations. Their burial mounds which are spread on the flats of the Hermus near Sardis have been a sight of wonder for travellers since antiquity. The information supplied by ancient literature, much of which we owe to Herodotus and Xenophon and research in the first half of the last century, has been supplemented by what is being revealed by excavations in and around their capital Sardis and other regions of Lydia during the last few decades. What may be known about the Lydians by the general reader, however, may not amount to more than some stories such as that of the fabulous wealth of King Croesus which inspired tales of prosperity and gave birth to the expression ¿rich as Croesus¿ or that the Lydians were the people who invented metal coinage. The objective of this book is to present the history and culture of the Lydians as a whole without trying to give all of what is known about them. Despite its limited size, much of what the book comprises is not accessible to the general reader as a whole anywhere else.

Madduwatta(s) was a king of Arzawa, in Anatolia, about 14th or 13th century BC. Probably, Madduwatta was first a local king of a Lukka city-state at coast of southwestern Asia Minor. He faced a struggle, in the Lukka Lands, against a "man from Ahhiya", named Attarsiya (or Atreus, in Hellenized rendering and lost his rule. Tudhaliya II, great king of Hittite Empire, gave Madduwatta asylum, and even gave him the mountainous kingdom Zippasla (i.e. Sippylos, the mountainous part of Lydia?) with the Siyanti River Land (Maeandrus river?); but, on condition that Madduwatta use it as a base to invade Arzawa. When Madduwatta did this, Kupanta-Kurunta, king of Arzawa, destroyed his army and occupied Zippasla. Once more, Tudhaliya defeated Madduwatta's enemy and restored Madduwatta to his throne. And then, Madduwatta's previous enemy Attarisiya attacked Zippasla, with 100 chariots. This time, Madduwatta did not even defend himself, but fled a third time to the Hittites. Tudhaliya sent a third army under Kisnapali (a Hittite general) to the land to drive Attarissiya out. This time, the Hittite army was ordered to stay. Madduwatta, apparently, then decided he was never again going to suffer such indignities. When Dalawa (Tlos) and Hinduwa rebelled, Madduwatta suggested that Kisnapali take Hinduwa while Madduwatta take Dalawa. But while Kisnapili was on his way to Hinduwa, Madduwatta allied with Dalawa, and with its help ambushed and killed Kisnapali. Independent once more, Madduwatta married the Arzawan king's daughter, and soon took that kingdom too. The flourishing of Madduwatta is reported as 1410 B.C. When Tudhaliya ordered Madduwatta to put down a revolt in Hapalla (or Caballa), he did - but then Madduwatta forced Hapalla, too, to switch loyalty to his own side. He then bullied Pisidia into his kingdom, even closer to the Hittite heartland. Under Tudhaliya's successor Arnuwanda I, Madduwatta even allied with his old foe Attarisiya and invaded Alashiya. The works of known authors are followed by anonymous works that were written during the same period and within the same geography. The present book contains information about 762 authors who compiled works in the fields of military art and science. However, there is also considerable number of works by unknown authors. Officials moved valuable artworks--including thousands of sumptuous Qur'an (Koran) manuscripts and loose pages dating from the 7th to 17th century--to Istanbul to ensure their safety. Penned by celebrated calligraphers and embellished by skilled illuminators and bookbinders, these manuscripts are now housed in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts (Türk ve slam Eserleri Müzesi or TIEM) in Istanbul, established in 1914. This story unfolds in "The Art of the Qur'an: Treasures from the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts," the companion publication to the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery's groundbreaking exhibition, the first major presentation of Qur'ans in the United States. The book's authors describe the formation of this one-of-a-kind collection and the history of TIEM, whose centuries-old records on patrons, calligraphers, illuminators, and provenance allow us to create "biographies" detailing the production of the Qur'ans in the exhibition. Essays address the Qur'an as a written text--from content and organization to the elaborate calligraphy and illuminated designs that transformed the volumes into beautiful artworks. "The Art of the Qur'an "also includes in-depth descriptions of some seventy works from TIEM and the Smithsonian's Sackler and Freer Galleries. It features full-page, color images of the earliest known Qur'an folios and manuscripts from the Umayyad and Abbasid Near East (7th-10th century), Seljuk Iran and Anatolia (12th century), the Mongol Il-Khanid and Timurid empires and Mamluk Cairo (14th and 15th centuries), Safavid and Ottoman empires (16th and 17th centuries) as well as a number of mosque furnishings, such as Qur'an boxes and stands. The book focuses on the impact of wartime conditions on life in a city of nearly a million citizens, with a specific emphasis on public order, crime and punishment. The author, Deniz Dölek-Sever, takes us through a six-chapter panorama of four years of hardship in the Ottoman capital during the war, analyzing various aspects of public order, crime and punishment as experienced daily by both Muslim and non-Muslim inhabitants of Istanbul, and as perceived by the state. In doing so, her study uncovers inner workings behind state officials' policies on public order and crime. Tracing instruments of surveillance and control and various crime categories, and making extensive use of primary sources, the work provides a unique understanding of public order and crime, as well as practices of punishment in a period when the Committee of Union and Progress reigned over the political life of the Ottoman Empire. Istanbul's Great War is an attempt to bring a fresh approach to the current literature on wartime Ottoman Empire.
