‎FESTSCHRIFT UGUR DERMAN.‎

‎M. Ugur Derman Festschrift. Papers presented on the occasion of his sixty-fifth birthday.= M. Ugur Derman armagani. Altmisbesinci yasi münasebetiyle sunulmus tebligler. Edited by Irvin Cemil Schick.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (29 x 23 cm). In English, French, and Turkish. 616, [2] p., color ills. M. Ugur Derman Festschrift. Papers presented on the occasion of his sixty-fifth birthday.= M. Ugur Derman armagani. Altmisbesinci yasi münasebetiyle sunulmus tebligler. Edited by Irvin Cemil Schick. M. Ugur Derman's name is synonymous with calligraphy and marbling. Having apprenticed himself to Necmeddin Okyay -the sst representative of the Ottoman book arts tradition- in the 1950's and not left his side until his death, having known closely every leading calligrapher, illuminator, and marbler of his day, he is unequalled as either a scholar or a connoisseur. More than anyone in his generation, Ugur Derman is responsible for the survival of the arts of the book in Turkey, and for the recent resurgence in their appreciation. For this reason, the present Festschrift was compiled on the occasion of his sixty-fifth birthday with contributions received fom all over the world. In honoring his long career and more importantly his preseverance, we hope that this volume will find favor with him, and believe that it will serve as a basic reference in the Islamic arts of the book for many years to come.‎

‎Hermus (Gediz) valley in Western Turkey. Results of an archaeological and historical survey.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 21 cm). In English with a Turkish summary. 368 p., b/w and color ills. Hermus (Gediz) valley in Western Turkey. Results of an archaeological and historical survey. The importance of Gediz River, which has been inhabited since Neolithicum (6th Millenium B.C.) in 15 sites, had increased rapidly due to fertile lands and suitable communication routes with Aegean Islands and Interior Anatolia. The Gediz known Seha River Land by Hittites was ruled (ca.1300 B.C.) by vassal king Manapatarhunda appointed by Mursili II. Many newly discovered Late Bronze Age sites i.e. Kumtepe, K. Yamanlar, Pinarbasi, Nemrut, Akçapinar, Asartepe-Urganli, Gavurtepe, testify to this expansion. During the Iron Age, Gediz River was called Hermus. The valley connected Ionia, Aeolis and Lydia with each other. The Aeolic towns were generally small and fortified on high and rocky hill sites with isolated acropolis on the summit. Some newly discovered fortified settlements were connected with so far unknown Aeolic cities: Aegiroessa with Boztepe, Notium with Kumtepe and Killa with Asarlik Tepe. The central part of the Hermus valley was the land of Lydians with the capital Sardis. No other Lydian town was satisfactorily explored so far. Clear traces of Lydian occupation were attested in Daldis, Akçapinar, Mersinli, and Kemaliye during recent research. The burial mounds i.e.tumuliwith tomb chambers built with delicately dressed limestone blocks were so popular in Lydia and hence compared with Egypt and called also Lydian pyramids. Some of them were investigated and recorded during the survey which were illicitly excavated by treasure hunters. Hermus enjoyed a high degree of prosperity under Attalids and Romans. The associations of professions are well developed and mentioned in inscriptions especially in the production of textile and leather. Numerous fortifications, monasteries and a summer residence at Nymphaeum were built during 13th century under the Lascarids. 12th and 13th centuries are characterized also by migrating Turcoman tribes into Byzantine territories. The Emirate of Saruhan (1313-1410) continued the former stability in central Lydia. Manisa started to prosper as a capital of the Emirate. During Ottoman Period Manisa was a city governed by princes of the Sultanate. For that reason, Manisa is a typical Ottoman town adorned with numerous mosques, khans, Turkish baths and covered bazaars. The fertile valley is still an extensive reservoir for the research on the past cultures not only with respect to material remains but also the continuity of cultures is still perceivable i.e. in the tradition of place names, agriculture, handicrafts and architecture, despite the evergrowing pressure of 'modernity.'‎

‎Byzantine architectural sculpture in Çanakkale. Research into the Early Christian and Byzantine periods on the valleys that reached the Hellespont I.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (26 x 22 cm). In English. 660 p., ills. Byzantine architectural sculpture in Çanakkale. Research into the Early Christian and Byzantine periods on the valleys that reached the Hellespont I. When it is asked "What was the importance of the Hellespont in the Byzantine period?". its geographical location stands out. Written data indicate that this location maintained its importance throughout the Byzantine period. According to these data, preliminary surveys were carried out in the region between 1999 and 2002. The data we obtained from these studies showed that both the surveys and the archaeological data particularly on the upper and middle sections of the strait were limited. This creates a serious problem in understanding the relationships between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean at the long distance and between the Marmara Sea and the Aegean Sea at the short distance. To contribute to the settlement of this problem, we conduct archaeological surveys in order to determine the Byzantine settlements on the valleys that reached the Hellespont and to understand the settlement patterns.‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. 4to. (33 x 25 cm). Edition in Turkish. 382 p., color ills. Kur'an-i Kerim sanati. Türk ve Islâm Eserleri Müzesi hazineleri. 15 Ekim 2016 - 20 Subat 2017. [Exhibition catalogue]. With contributions by François Derroche, Edhem Eldem, Jane McAuliffe, Sana Mirza, Zeren Tanindi. In the early twentieth century, the Ottoman Empire was in political turmoil. Officials moved valuable artworks--including thousands of sumptuous Qur'an (Koran) manuscripts and loose pages dating from the 7th to 17th century--to Istanbul to ensure their safety. Penned by celebrated calligraphers and embellished by skilled illuminators and bookbinders, these manuscripts are now housed in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts (Türk ve slam Eserleri Müzesi or TIEM) in Istanbul, established in 1914. This story unfolds in "The Art of the Qur'an: Treasures from the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts," the companion publication to the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery's groundbreaking exhibition, the first major presentation of Qur'ans in the United States. The book's authors describe the formation of this one-of-a-kind collection and the history of TIEM, whose centuries-old records on patrons, calligraphers, illuminators, and provenance allow us to create "biographies" detailing the production of the Qur'ans in the exhibition. Essays address the Qur'an as a written text--from content and organization to the elaborate calligraphy and illuminated designs that transformed the volumes into beautiful artworks. "The Art of the Qur'an "also includes in-depth descriptions of some seventy works from TIEM and the Smithsonian's Sackler and Freer Galleries. It features full-page, color images of the earliest known Qur'an folios and manuscripts from the Umayyad and Abbasid Near East (7th-10th century), Seljuk Iran and Anatolia (12th century), the Mongol Il-Khanid and Timurid empires and Mamluk Cairo (14th and 15th centuries), Safavid and Ottoman empires (16th and 17th centuries) as well as a number of mosque furnishings, such as Qur'an boxes and stands. Most of these works have rarely, if ever, been published.‎

‎Fine English Paperback. Small 4to. (27 x 20 cm). In English. 54, [2] p., 53 numerous b/w plts., 46 numerous color plates. The people & places of Constantinople. Watercolours by Amadeo Count Preziosi, (1816-1882). It's prepared for the first exhibition on Count Amadeo Preziosi, (1816-1882) in Great Britain. "This is the first exhibition of the work of Amadeo Preziosi to be held in this ccountry. It does not cclaim to be definitive, but it centered on the Museum's substantial holdings and augmented by loans from collections in Great Britain. Preziosi's name is now little known except to specialists, but in the period 1840-70 he was by far the most reknowned artist in Constantinople. He was only retrieved from the critical neglect into which he had fallen in the 20th century by Rodney Searight who began to appreciate his importance while building up his unsurpassed collection of views of the Near and Middle East. Indeed, it is fitting that the exhibition honours not only Preziosi himself but also Rodney Searight, pioneer of the study of this field, whose collection the Museum is raising funds to acquire. It is hoped that the enthusiasm Preziosi's contemporaries felt foe his lively and colourful studies of a now vanished way of life will be appreciated by visitors to the exhibition". (From the Kaufmann's preface).‎

An extensive study of the numerous Islamic monuments in Albania. The author examined the historical context in which they were built, their architectural characteristics and present state. The analysis is placed in the context of state administration, cultural and social life, and institutional system during the period of Ottoman rule. As such, the book is much more than an architectural study; it also reflects the Ottoman administrative system applied in the provinces, the social functions of the state, and the institutional structure of society. "Architectural historians will appreciate the book most, but students of the Ottoman Caliphate and European art history will also benefit from this sound study." ‎Kütahya: Sadberk Hanim Museum Kütahya Tiles and Ceramics Collection.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (32 x 25 cm). Edition in English. 488 p., color ills. Kütahya: Sadberk Hanim Museum Kütahya Tiles and Ceramics Collection. The KÜTAHYA: Sadberk Hanim Museum's Kütahya Tile and Ceramic Collection Exhibition will be held at Sadberk Hanim Museum and remain open from 8 March until 25 November 2018. The exhibition encompasses Kütahya ware in all its wide diversity of form and decoration, and is accompanied by a comprehensive book on the subject. Curators of the exhibition are Hülya Bilgi and Idil Zanbak Vermeersch, who have also prepared the catalogue. The Ottoman period tiles and ceramics collection is one of the most important of the Sadberk Hanim Museum collections. It consists of ware made in potteries in Iznik, Kütahya and Çanakkale, which were the three main centres of Ottoman tile and ceramic art between the 15th and early 20th centuries; enabling the development of production over this period to be clearly understood. Organised as one of the major events on Sadberk Hanim Museum's programme for 2018, the exhibition presents examples of tiles and ceramics produced in Kütahya, where pottery has been made without interruption since antiquity and which in Ottoman times became the second most important source of tiles after Iznik. Sadberk Hanim Museum's Kütahya tile and ceramic collection is here exhibited chronologically and according to stylistic features. The exhibition is a reflection of production in Kütahya between the 18th and 20th centuries, during the Ottoman period. The diversity of the exhibits means that they throw light on both the artistic and technical aspects of Kütahya tile and ceramic production; tracing changes over time in decoration, form, and quality of the paste and glaze. Ceramic finds uncovered in the course of public infrastructure works in the city of Kütahya in 1979 demonstrated that production in Kütahya continued in parallel with that of Iznik. This ancient art managed to survive in Kütahya for centuries, from early Ottoman times onwards. Kütahya's master potters and tile makers maintained a high level of creativity and while styles changed throughout the period they continued to meet the needs of ordinary people for domestic ware, while at the same time producing tiles to embellish the walls of monumental buildings. Kütahya tiles and ceramics had long since found their way into museums and private collections in the 19th century, and today are increasingly sought after by collectors.‎

Hasbahçe: Osmanli kültüründe bahçe ve çiçek. Contents: Ottoman and other gardens. The features of Ottoman gardens. Ottoman gardens and Europe. Flowers among the Ottomans. The concepts of paradise and garden among the Ottomans. Ottoman palace gardens. Imperial gardens in Istanbul other than palace agdrens. References to Istanbul gardens and flowers in contemporary memoirs. Treatises on gardening and flowers. "True lover who has exprienced this blossoming of eternal rose in himself understands that the gardens of this world are only a lovelyn pretext for the Beloved to veil and unveil Himself at the same time. The hidden treasure of his beauty needs the garden to become visible to those who are still bound to sensible and tangible beauty. The eye of love sees behind the roses and trees, in the shade of the slender cypress and in the modest genuflection of the little violet, in the limpid water of basins and in the gushing fountains faint remembrances of the garden of Paradise with its Tuba tree, kauthar and salsabil; a Paradise which is, in turn, only a sensual symbol of God's everlasting beauty".
