From the library of Douglas Fairbanks Jr. 1909-2000 -- an iconic American actor from Hollwood's Golden Era and a highly decorated naval officer of World War II -- with his bookplate on the verso of the front flyleaf. Inscribed to him by Chevalier on the half-title page. His connection to Chevalier seems to be a long one: Fairbanks Sr. 1883-1939 offered Chevalier a star billing with Mary Pickford but Chevalier was hesitant to perform in a silent film. It is ilkely that their paths crossed often as Chevalier primarily associated with Paramount studios and Fairbanks were part of a prolific and powerful Hollywood coterie that included such giants as Charlie Chaplin and D. Copy owned by the legendary Marlene Dietrich inscribed to her by Chevalier on the half title: "Pout toi - Merveilleuse Marlinou que ne sont pour le reste de ma que tendres et admirations a ton sujet". Marlinou is his affectionate nickname for Marlene and the inscription conveys the affection he had for her. Roughly translated to English: "For you. the marvelous Marlene who for the rest of my life gets nothing but tenderness and admiration as far as your concerned". Indeed Dietrich and Chevalier were dear friends both Europeans whose international stardom extended to and from Hollywood. Her correspondence with Chevalier - along with many other international luminaries- is part of The Marlene Dietrich Collection at theStiftung Deutsche Kinemathek in Germany. Book near fine.
