A well-known mountaineer and member of Hunt's 1953 Everest Expedition, Stobart later developed two other careers - as photographer and cookery writer. This volume was some twenty years in the making. Curiously elusive in this condition.‎

First published in 1876, 'Bevan' is probably the best of the later nineteenth century pocket or 'portmanteau' guides to the county. These were deliberately condensed, both in size and content, to provide ultimately portable information for those visiting by rail and road. A seventh and final edition appeared in 1891 by which time the larger and weightier guides were beginning to dominate. Bennett, p.204.‎
