‎[MAP of VENETIAN BAY and ALGERIAN SHORES from IMPORTANT TURKISH INCUNABULA / CIHANNUMA] Isbu sahifede Venedik Körfezi ve müstemil oldugu Cezayir ve sevâhilinde vuk'u memâlik ve bilâde desm ü tersim olunmusdur. [Published by Ibrahim Müteferrika, (1674-1745)].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original b/w map from Kitab-i Cihannuma which is one of the most important Turkish incunabula. Oblong large 4to. (31 x 37 cm). In Ottoman script. It shows Venice and Venetian Bay and Algerian shores at North Africa (Maghrib). Toponyms are in Turkish with Arabic letters. Written directions (Simal, Cenûb, Sark and Garb) on corners of the map, and decorative compass on Mediterranean Sea. Scale can be seen at left upper side (El-mikyas: Mil-i Islâmiyân Mil-i Frençe, and Mil-i Italiya]. It's one of the thirteen maps and plates from the book of Cihannuma. The story of Cihannuma can be considered as an effort to keep up with the speed that knowledge spread around the world at a time when literacy was highly limited. Kâtip Çelebi began to rewrite Cihannuma in 1654. During the next six years, he added to his books the knowledge he gained from the books he read. Kâtip Çelebi was vastly influenced by nonreligious positive knowledge, especially by the Atlas and later the Atlas Minor of Gerardus Mercator. He had the book translated from Latin to Turkish by a French recruit andenriched his own book with the new information. He brought together in Cihannuma the knowledge of geography and astronomy existing in Western sources (1654). Cihannüma has 13 charts and 27 maps. Mercator's maps are distinguished by their distinct properties. However, there are such maps which depict Istanbul, Anatolia, the Caucasus and the Orient that have to have been borrowed from other sources and there are those with relatively less detail that might have been prepared by Muslim geographers. Sources cite Ahmed El Kirimî (Ahmed the Crimean) and Galatali Migirdich as mapmakers for Cihannüma. Their names are placed on the maps. Another name that is mentioned is Tophaneli Ibrahim. Researchers agree on the fact that he is Ibrahim Müteferrika. Perhaps he wished to hasten the printing of the book. Perhaps he enjoyed making this contribution to a book he half owned. There is one map in Cihannüma which definitely does not belong to Mercator. Nor is there any information that it was originally charted by Müteferrika's team. Historians state that the 'invertedness' can be found in other maps made by Muslim cartographers. Since it is amap of Turkey, the difference can easily be perceived. The Mediterranean coasts of Turkey are at the top of the map while the Black Sea coasts are at the bottom. The compass on the map correctly indicates the North. The map seems to be inverted but it is not considered scientifically wrong to draw maps in this fashion...". (Source: Boyut; Kitab-i Cihannuma). Extremely rare.‎

‎ERKÂN-I HARBIYYE-I UMUMIYYE.‎

‎[OTTOMAN MAP of EAST ANATOLIA in ENVERÎ SCRIPT - HURÛF-I MUNFASILA] Bayazid, Bargiri, Nahcivan, Karakilise.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original color map of Eastern Anatolia, Dogu Beyazit, Bayazid, Bargiri, Nakhchevan, Karakilise, Van, etc. 50x60 cm. In Ottoman script (Enverî). 1 p. Scale: 1:200.000. Slightly toned, several small holes on paper. Otherwise a very good copy. Enverî script is the war minister Enver Pasha's alphabet and writing amendment, which he tried to implement within the Ministry of War between 12 March 1914 and 10 August 1914. Starting from the Tanzimat (Westernization) period in the Ottoman Empire, the discussions on simplification in language, writing, alphabet and reading-writing had increased and at the end of the 19th century, military necessities also became one of the concerns. The problems such as the low rate of literacy among the recruited soldiers, the need to teach the soldiers how to read and write in a short time, and their misconceptions about the spelling of proper nouns led Enver Pasha to add the writing problem to his reform agenda, once he took office. Enver Pasha's reform is based on the principle of writing the Ottoman letters, which take different forms in the beginning, in the middle and at the end according to their unification with the other letters, separately in their original state without merging them. While this new alphabet was being created, the existing 32 letters in the Ottoman were preserved. The 8 vowels in the Turkish language, which could not be written with the old letters, was shown by placing small marks on the existing vowels and by doing so a new alphabet consisting of a total of 40 letters was created. With this alphabet, officially called 'Ordu Elifbasi', rules were adopted such as writing of the letters without merging them, writing the words as they are pronounced. At first glance, Enver Pasha's writing reform, which appeared as a definite solution to the theory of the solution of the ongoing debates on the alphabet and the spelling, formed a wide experiment field in the military. It was not possible to use Ordu Elifbasi, which essentially is a transliteration alphabet that allows transferring the sounds of these three different languages (Turkish, Arabic, Persian) to a single alphabet, in the daily life. Thanks to this new alphabet and spelling, learning to read and write were accelerated to some extent. However, it was seen that the literacy rate of the well-educated, literate people fell to the spelling and did not even progress. This alphabet and spelling reform, which Enver Pasha thought of spreading to the whole country, caused much more problems as it was experienced in the army. Although it was postponed until the end of the mobilization period following the declaration of the mobilization, Ordu Elifbasi, which remained in force for 152 days, eventually failed to be realized. (Source: Karakus: Enver Pasha's Alphabet And Spelling Attempt: Ordu Elifbasi (Army Alphabet)).In this extremely rare document, there are some articles and thoughts on a case. ‎[EXERCISES ON ARMENIAN LANGUAGE FOR THE OTTOMAN LEARNERS] Talîm-i lisân-i Ermeni.‎

‎Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Modern very decorated full leather bdg. Tear and missing on imprint page; also first two pages, however only two words are missing, slightly toned on pages. Foolscap 8vo. (17,5 x 11,5 cm). In Ottoman script and Armenian. [8], 94 p. Talîm-i lisân-i Ermeni. The Tanzimat reforms from 1839 stimulated Armenian cultural activity in Constantinople and the port city of Smyrna (now, Izmir). The number of Armenian titles printed in the Ottoman capital grew exponentially throughout the next few decades. By the mid-nineteenth century Constantinople had regained its status as "the World Capital of the Armenian Book" for a new span of 40 years. Thereafter, the fortunes of Armenian book publishing in Constantinople became hostage to political developments in the Ottoman Empire. Armenian printing stagnated during the repressive regime of Sultan Abdülhamid II, but rebounded immediately after the 1908 Revolution. It almost ground to a halt during the First World War, yet it was rejuvenated immediately after the Ottoman defeat. After Constantinople (renamed Istanbul in 1930) was integrated into the Turkish Republic established by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Armenian cultural freedoms were curtailed, the total number of Armenian books published declined, although the city still remains an important center of Armenian-language book printing outside Armenia. This is a small and extremely rare Armenian linguistic book printed for the Ottoman / Turkish learners. OCLC: 1004312309 / 780182928.; Özege 19657. First and Only Edition.‎

Scale: 1:12.000.000. Otherwise a very good copy. Slightly chipped extremities. Dated Hegira: 1311 = [Gregorian 1895]. Ali Seref Pasa or Hafiz Ali Esref. He was a soldier, who was schooled in Paris as a cartographer around 1862. Already in Paris he published his first atlas with 22 maps, called 'Yeni atlas'. Upon his return to Istanbul he became a chief cartographer at the Maatbaa-i amire Printing Press in Beyazit, which was the successor of the Muteferrika press from 1727. Among others he translated the large Kiepert map of Anatolia to Ottoman. He died in 1907, leaving his large project of a gigantic map of Anatolia in 100 sheets unfinished. Ali's name is often misunderstood or even listed as two different people: Ali Seref Pasa and Hafiz Ali Esref. Until the surname law adopted on June 21, 1934, Turks did not have surnames. They were born with one first name and were until the adulthood described only as sons or daughters of their parent's names. Later they were given titles such as Effendi (Sir), Bey (Chief) or Hanim (Madam) for higher classes, or they were given names according to their work or class. The names were not inherited by children until 1934, when the surname law was enforced. The map maker Ali received names Seref, the honourable, and Pasa, the dignitary. He was also known as Hafiz, the memorizer of Qur'an and Esref, Proud. So Ali Seref Pasa would have a meaning 'Honourable Dignitary Ali, and Hafiz Ali Esref, Memorizer of Qur'an, Proud Ali. Daruttibaa - Matbaa-I Amire Printing Press: The first press in the Muslim world, called Daruttibaa, was founded in Istanbul by Ibrahim Muteferrika in 1727, with a permission of Sultan Ahmeet III. It was located in Muteferrika's house. The first book was published in 1729 and until 1742 sixteen other works followed. After Muteferrika's death, the press was supressed for printing, as printed books were considered dangerous. In 1796 the press was purchased by the government and moved to Uskudar in Istanbul, and in 1831 finally to Beyazit, where it was renamed to Matbaa-i Amire in 1866. The press was closed in 1901 and was reopened in 1908 under the name 'Âmire' In 1927 the name changed to State Printing House. The press still exists and is known for publishing school and educational books. Extremely rare. Not in OCLC.; Not in TBMM Map Collection.‎

‎[OTTOMAN MILITARY MAP of PATAGONIA and FALKLAND ISLANDS: ROUTE of DRESDEN] Alman kruvazörü Dresden'in takîbi ve tahrîbi.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original color map. Elephant folio. (59x75 cm). In Ottoman script. [OTTOMAN MILITARY MAP of PATAGONIA and FALKLAND ISLANDS: ROUTE of DRESDEN] Alman kruvazörü Dresden'in takîbi ve tahrîbi. SMS Dresden cruiser's routes between 1913-1915 (World War 1) on the Patagonian shelf; western shores of South America, Patagonia and Falkland Islands. Dresden spent much of her career overseas. After commissioning, she visited the United States in 1909 during the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, before returning to Germany to serve in the reconnaissance force of the High Seas Fleet for three years. In 1913, she was assigned to the Mediterranean Division. She was then sent to the Caribbean to protect German nationals during the Mexican Revolution. In mid-1914, she carried the former dictator Victoriano Huerta to Jamaica, where the British had granted him asylum. She was due to return to Germany in July 1914, but was prevented by the outbreak of World War I from doing so. At the onset of hostilities, Dresden operated as a commerce raider in South American waters in the Atlantic, then moved to the Pacific Ocean in September and joined Maximilian von Spee's East Asia Squadron. Dresden saw action in the Battle of Coronel in November, where she engaged the British cruiser HMS Glasgow, and at the Battle of the Falkland Islands in December, where she was the only German warship to escape destruction. She eluded her British pursuers for several more months, until she put into Robinson Crusoe Island in March 1915. Her engines were worn out and she had almost no coal left for her boilers, so the ship's captain contacted the local Chilean authorities to have Dresden interned. She was trapped by British cruisers, including her old opponent Glasgow. The British violated Chilean neutrality and opened fire on the ship in the Battle of Más a Tierra. The Germans scuttled Dresden and the majority of the crew escaped to be interned in Chile for the duration of the war. The wreck remains in the harbor; several artifacts, including her bell and compass, have been returned to Germany.‎

‎ABÛ HAYYAN [AL-GHARNATÎ], (1256-1344).‎

‎[ASPECTS OF THE TURKISH LANGUAGE BY AN ARABIAN LINGUIST] Kitâb al-idrâk li-lisân al-Atrâk. Prep. by Dr. Ahmet Caferoglu, (1899-1975).‎

‎Very Good Arabic In modern full leather bdg. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Arabic and Modern Turkish. [xv], [1], 186, [2], 158 p. Abû ?ayyân Athîr ad-Dîn al-Gharnâtî, whose full name is Mu?ammad ibn Yûsuf bin 'Alî ibn Yûsuf ibn Hayyân, sometimes called Ibn Hayyan, was a celebrated commentator on the Quran and foremost Arabic grammarian of his era. His magnum opus Tafsir al-Bahr al-Muhit (Explanation of the Ocean) is the most important reference on Qur'anic expressions and the issues of grammar, vocabulary, etymology and the transcriber-copyists of the Holy Qur'an. Quite exceptionally for a linguist of Arabic of his day was his strong interest in non-Arabic languages. He wrote several works of comparative linguistics for Arabic speakers, and gives extensive comparative grammatical analysis and explanation. He was born in Spain in November of 1256 to a family of Berber origins, from the Berber tribe of Nifza. Historians variously cite Gharnati's place of birth as both Jaén and Granada; his appellation "Gharnati" derives from this latter. At the time Jaén was a dependency of Granada, and the appellation conflict may only be apparent. Abu Hayyan adhered to the Zahiri madhhab of Sunni Islam. When asked toward the end of his life about a claim he had switched to the Shafi'i madhhab, or some other school, he responded that, anyone who had known the ?ahiri school could never leave it. He regarded Sufism as heresy, and the metaphysicsts ibn Arabi, Mansur Al-Hallaj, Ibn al-Farid, Ibn Sab'in and Abu al-Hasan al-Shushtari, as especially impious heretics.[5] Abu Hayyan, along with most Muslim scholars of Andalus of the time, saw the appeal of Sufism as a particular threat to secular Muslims. On the Arabic language, Abu Hayyan shared the views of his fellow ?âhirî Andalusian, Ibn Ma?â'. Absolute belief in the divine mover led them to reject the concept of linguistic causality. For them the 'cause' of all things, including language, is attributable solely to God. Thus on theological grounds, he was suspicious of the so-called "eastern grammarian" supporters of 'linguistic causality'. When Abu Hayyan arrived in Egypt the Mamluk Sultan was ruler. Although Abu Hayyan held the Turkic languages of Mamluk Egypt superior to the Kipchak and Turkmen languages with which he was familiar, he also wrote grammars of Amharic, Middle Mongol, the Berber languages and the Turkic. Other Arabic-language linguists of his day had little regard for foreign languages. Abu Hayyan often illuminated Arabic grammatical concepts with quotes from various language. (Wikipedia). Ahmet Caferoglu was a Turkish filologist. He has worked on basic works of Turkish, etymology, Turkish dialects and Anatolian dialects. He was the first language dialect researcher and historian of science with sturdy title in Turkey. OCLC: 150018789 / 977434024 / 906866886 / 917024141 / 576836072 / 924028884.‎

‎REZA SHIRAZIAN.‎

‎Atlas of old Tehran.= Atlas-e Tehran-e qadîm. Introduction by Cyrus Alai.‎

‎New Persian Original bdg. HC. Folio. (34 x 24 cm). In Persian with abstracts in English. 392 p., color and b/w ills. Tehran became a major city of Iran after 1554 A.D. during the Safavid period when Shah Tahmasb I, son of Shah Ismail, ordered the implementation of two large-scale public works. The first project was the construction of ramparts and moats surrounding the entire city, which defined the city's perimeters and increased its defense. The rampart consisted of 114 towers, representing the 114 chapters within the Holy Quran and enclosed an area of 4.35 km2. The second project was the establishment of the bazaar, the heart of the industrial and commercial activities of the city, surrounded by numerous holy shrines. However, it was 240 years later in the Spring of 1796 A.D. that Tehran became the national capital of Iran, during Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar's reign. 2016 A.D. actually marks the 220th year since Tehran became the political centre of Iran. The first known map of Tehran (page 18), a Russian spy map, dates back to 1826 A.D. The next Russian map of Tehran (page 24) from 1852 A.D. was translated into Persian and presented as a gift to Naser al-Din Shah Qajar (page 29). After the establishment of the military polytechnic school in 1851 A.D. and the arrival of Europe an military instructors, the importance of accurate topographical maps was recognized by the nation's leaders. The Austrian artillery trainer for cannons, August Karl Krziz, coordinated in 1858 A.D. the preparation of the maps of Tehran (page 39) and its surrounding area (page 35). This was the beginning of scientific cartography in Iran. By 1863 A.D., maps of Tehran Province for the purpose of tax collection (page 58) were being produced by engineer Abdul Rasool Khan. Tehran dramatically expanded after a huge flood in 1867 A.D. destroyed a large portion of the Safavid period ramparts and moats, after which Alexander Bohler, a French military instructor, designed a new and enlarged rampart and moat enclosure. Within four years between 1867 A.D. and 1871 A.D., Tehran grew from 4 .35 km2 to 19.75 km2 with these new constructions. By 1891 A.D., a highly detailed and technical map of Tehran (page 64) had been produced by Abdul Ghafar Najmolmoq. During the reigning years of Mozafar al-Din Shah, Mohammad Ali Shah, and Ahmad Shah, maps for Tehran postal services (page 126) and Tehran provincial delineation (page 127) were produced. During these years, the Russian, British and French prepared several geopolitical maps of the region including Tehran. For example, the map on page 323 reproduces a map prepared in 1892 A.D. by the British Survey of India at the scale of 1:506,880. In 1914 A.D., German publisher Wagner & Debes prepared a touristic map of Tehran (page 134). In 1922 A.D. the Ministry of Culture's Investigation Section prepared a map of schools in Tehran (page 138). During the Pahlavi I period (1925~1941 A.D.), modernization of Tehran became a national priority. By 1930 A.D. a map for street enlargement in Tehran (page 158) had been published. In 1932 A.D., the demolition of the Naser al-Din Shah Qajar period ramparts began simultaneous to further expansion of urbanized Tehran. The 1936 A.D. military map of Tehran (page 169) is testimony to the changes in the urban morphology of this period. The creation of a dedicated military cartographic service in 1935 A.D. marked an important milestone in the history of cartography in Iran. The 1937 A.D. urban development plan of Tehran (page 170) clearly shows the new streets, squares and urban development envisioned. The first known aerial photograph of Tehran dating from 1940 A.D. (page 177) displays the realization of this urban development plan. After the invasions by the Russians, British and Americans in 1941 A.D., cartographic activities in Iran suddenly increased. Sergeant Mohammad Reza Ghaffari privately published maps of Tehran [.] The above mentioned maps are a few representative samples of the over 270 maps‎

Antonio Zelic (Zellich) of Brela was one of many Dalmatians who left his homeland in pursuit of a better life during the 19th century. However, instead of going west, he set out toward the East, to the Ottoman imperial capital - Istanbul. Upon arrival in the city on the Bosphorus, Zelic found employment at the lithographic print house of Henri Cayol, the first of its kind in the Ottoman Empire. In 1869, Zelic opened his own lithographic print house called "Zellich and Sons" (A. Zellich et fils). His descendants continued his work with great success, and the Zellich Print House, now known as "Zellich Brothers" (Zellich frères), became one of the most renowned in the Empire. Zellich Brothers won recognition due to the high quality of their products, and, above all, the amazing beauty of their postcards and posters. Their crowning achievement was an order for the printing of the Ottoman Turkish Lira banknotes in 1914. Zellichs received many Ottoman and international awards, including medals conferred by the Pope, the Persian shah, and the Serbian king.". ‎[GREECE, THE ARCHIPELAGO, MEDITERRANEAN SHORES OF NORTH AFRICA, AND WEST ANATOLIA] [Plan of Greece showing the Second Battle of Çatalca].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original b/w map. 70x57 cm. In Ottoman script. Folded. No scale info. A huge plan showing The Second Battle of Çatalca fought between 03 February 1913 and 03 April 1913 was a major "continuous skirmish" of the First Balkan War. The battle consisted of a series of thrusts and counter-thrusts by both the Ottomans and the Bulgarians. On 20 February the Ottomans, in coordination with a separate attack from Gallipoli, charged the Bulgarian positions. Although the Bulgarians repulsed the initial attack, they were weakened enough that they withdrew over fifteen kilometers to the south and twenty kilometers to the west to secondary defensive positions; but eventually the lines returned to essentially the originals. The separate siege of Edirne resulted in its loss to the Bulgarians on 26 March, sapping Ottoman morale; and with heavy Bulgarian losses to both fighting and cholera, the battle dwindled down and ceased by 3 April 1913. On 16 April a second ceasefire (armistice) was agreed to, ending the last fighting in the war. Lieutenant Colonel Mehmet Nihat Bey of Bursa who was born in 1886 accomplished to write 39 books about military history which are including his war experience and his translation works. Nihat Bey who is the first and the most important military historian in the Republic of Turkey was an intellectual person rather than a soldier. He meticulously evaluated many mistakes and points should learn about war by an objective eye in his works. Although it passed a century from the time these books had been written this great person couldn't have been totally discovered by researchers yet. The first military historian in the Republic of Turkey Mehmet Nihat Bey, participated in Tripoli, Balkan, Gallipoli, and the Turkish War of Independence. He taught in a military academy for many years and he impressed many staff officers in terms of idea. During the first years of the republic era in Turkey he lectured about military history and until the last year before he died he had given so useful pieces of information in the warfare of Çanakkale for visitors. Nihat Bey evaluated the conditions about the period of his life and the wars he participated by an objective view and he left great materials for the next generations succeeding him. He enlightened Turkish recent history by writing the events which he had witnessed. Studies of Nihat Bey have an important impact on the researchers who want to have knowledge about Balkan and Gallipoli wars which fulfilled their 100th anniversary.‎
