Bordeaux: James l'Aveugle 1710. First edition. An important imaginary voyage to Australia: a 'landmark' in the development of the French voyage novel Atkinson in its original full calf decorated binding. A Robinsonade account which predates Defoe. It is complete with the ship wreck exploration conflict with local inhabitants stand off and final rescue by a passing ship. It is a reasonable representation of the Australian continent and its challenges along with a realistic estimation of the importance of mining and irrigation to Australia that "foreshadow what has actually come to pass in modern Australia." Friederich The title page is falsely dated 1710. In his deep analyses of Tyssot de Patot and his publications Aubrey Rosenberg has concluded that this 1710 printing with the armillary sphere device on the title page with the base pointing to the left is indeed the first edition and was published between 1714 and 1718. Australian Daguerreotypes
A pair of quarter-plate daguerreotype portraits each approximately 100 � 80 mm of Thomas Radford 1795-1867 and his wife Martha 1796-1867
The Radfords were born in Devon emigrated to South Australia in October 1838 and lived in the Barossa Valley from the mid-1840s until their death. From the perceived ages of the subjects these images would appear to date from the 1850s. Other later images of the Radfords are held in the State Library of South Australia. They substantiate the identification and confirm that these daguerreotypes by an anonymous photographer are of rural South Australian origin as the Radfords did not leave the colony after they arrived here in 1838. Both images are in excellent condition with the original brass matts one a little tarnished preservers and glass but uncased as found. Daguerreotypes of Australian origin are rare. unknown

Tall octavo iv 16 v-x pages including the printed wrappers with advertisements on all pages with Roman numerals except the first one which is the title. Acidic title-wrappers a little discoloured around the margins and very lightly chipped; an excellent copy with contemporary annotations to a page of statistical returns. The contents are what one would generally expect to find - a potted history of the association lists of new publications reviews a 'useful list' of books numerous period advertisements - but there are two topical contributions. The first a little over two pages long is devoted to publications relating to the war in South Africa. The second one column in fine print is a lengthy poem 'To a Black Venus' by Guy Bronte. Pity we don't have time to quote it in full: 'Hail dusky Venus! Not the classic article / But Venus camping in the Myall Creek. / Yet like thy namesake thou hast not a particle / of dress redundant for the sculptural Greek. // . // But as thou wilt not be for exhibition / I need not further here this theme discuss. / Thou art content no doubt with thy condition; / At least for "Woman's Rights" thou dost not fuss. // After a feed of snake right as a trivet / thou art to lie and in the sunshine bask. / Yet stay a whitefellow may "Baccer give it" / So thou I may be sure wilt come and ask'. There is a moral to this tale in twelve quatrains but we'll not spoil it for the lucky purchaser. Vardon and Pritchard, Printers paperback
