‎SS 'Waratah'‎

‎A vintage photograph of SS 'Waratah' in July 1909 at Ocean Steamers Wharf Port Adelaide prior to leaving Adelaide on her final voyage when she disappeared without trace‎

‎A glos-finish gelatin silver photograph visible image size 192 272 mm behind glass in its original timber frame 373 450 mm with a gilt fillet over the glass; the window mat is wood-grained possibly cut from a veneer sheet; both the photograph and frame are in excellent condition. The photographer is not identified. The SS 'Waratah' 9339 tons was built for the Blue Anchor Line; she was 'designed to carry emigrants to Australia and cargo on her way home to England. Her maiden voyage from London to Adelaide started on 6 November 1908 and arrived in Adelaide on 15 December and at Sydney on Christmas Eve 1908. She was back in London on 7 March 1909 . Without any delay she was loaded again and started her second trip for Australia on 27 April with cargo and nearly 200 passengers arriving in Adelaide on 6 June. After visiting Melbourne and Sydney she was back at Port Adelaide on 2 July. In Adelaide she took on 300 tons of Lead concentrates and a large quantity of refrigerated meat and boxes of butter and grain a total of 6665 tons as well as 82 passengers. After leaving Adelaide on 7 July she arrived a day ahead of schedule in Durban on 25 July. Here she unloaded some of her cargo before proceeding to Cape Town to take on more passengers and coal for the remainder of the voyage. After leaving Durban she disappeared. The last possible sighting of her was by the "Guelph" on the night of 27 July' during a violent storm Flinders Ranges Research website. Among the South Australians on board were Agnes Grant Hay nee Gosse and one of her daughters; Agnes was the widow of Alexander Hay 1820-1898 merchant pastoralist and politician perhaps best remembered for Mount Breckan at Victor Harbor his grand 38-room residence. unknown‎

‎DUGUID Charles‎

‎The Desert Trail. With the Light Horse through Sinai to Palestine. By Scotty's Brother‎

‎Adelaide: Department of Repatriation 1919. Hardcover. Very Good. Adelaide Department of Repatriation 1919 fourth edition/ 1919. Octavo viii last blank 129 3 blank illustration verso blank pages with 26 illustrations after photographs on 14 leaves versos blank plus a double-page folding map. Original half maroon morocco and brown stippled cloth with the title and author in gilt on the front cover; leather slightly rubbed at the extremities; light tidemark down the middle of the front pastedown and flyleaf with slight cockling and a light tidemark to the bottom margin throughout; tiny hole to one plate almost certainly a paper flaw; these blemishes are relatively mild in the scheme of things and overall this is a very good copy with a contemporary name and local address on the front flyleaf. In our experience this is a presentation binding. Charles Duguid 1884-1986 a Scottish-born doctor was appointed captain in the Australian Army Medical Corps Australian Imperial Force in February 1917. 'He treated casualties in the Middle East March-July before returning to Australia in a hospital ship. His AIF appointment terminated on 5 October' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. The book was written in honour of 'Scotty' his brother William George Duguid. He was an original member of the 8th Light Horse Regiment and served in Gallipoli but had transferred to the 3rd Light Horse when he was killed in action on 19 April 1917 near Aseifiyeh. The author's foreword recounts in pathetic detail the circumstances of his death. This classic war memoir went through four editions in less than six months; in spite of that this title is elusive and fine copies of the true first edition are utterly rare. In over forty years we have not had a copy of the third edition and the State Library of South Australia does not have that edition either but the following information not at all well-known has been gleaned from copies of the other editions we have handled. The second and fourth editions are identified as such on the front wrapper which also states 'Proceeds in Aid of Light Horse Memorial' replacing a small printer's device on the first edition cover. The first edition has the acknowledgements on page iii and no testimonials; the second edition has a testimonial from Blackburn VC on page iii with the acknowledgements on the verso; the fourth edition has testimonials from Blackburn VC and 'A Permanently Incapacitated Light Horseman' on page iii with the acknowledgements on the verso. The fourth edition has approximately 40 more pages than the first two editions merely because it has been set in larger type. Some idea of the rapidity with which these editions appeared may be appreciated from the following: the Blackburn testimonial is dated 10 February 1919 the other testimonial is dated 6 March 1919 the State Library of SA has a copy of the fourth edition signed and dated by the author on 2 June 1919 and the processing date of the State Library's first edition is 29 April 1919. Read it and you'll understand why it struck a chord. Dornbusch 387; not in Fielding and O'Neill; Trigellis-Smith 263. Department of Repatriation hardcover‎

‎Melbourne: E.W. Cole Book Arcade 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Melbourne E.W. Cole Book Arcade 1913. Octavo 200 pages. Red and black pictorial cloth lightly marked and rubbed with minimal wear to the extremities; contemporary gift inscription on the front flyleaf and a later signature on the front and rear flyleaves; light red pencil underlining or marginal emphases to eight pages and a short light red pencil mark near the title of eleven poems; trifling signs of use and age; overall a very good copy. The author's first published book. The front cover illustration is by David Low; the last six pages are a Glossary 'for the use of the thoroughly genteel'. McLaren 243. The Institute of Australian Culture contains on its website some interesting information about this book contributed by Neil Glover who made much more sense of McLaren's notes than this cataloguer. The book was issued in wrappers in cloth as here and in leather a deluxe boxed edition. Glover writes: 'McLaren speculates that 5000 copies in total were printed by E.W.Cole. Possibly 4400 Paperback 500 Cloth and 100 Leather'. In early May 1916 Cole advised Dennis the remaining stock comprised 1977 copies in wrappers 60 copies in cloth and 35 copies in leather. 'This highlights the slow sales. Following a dispute with Cole over the Bloke stories appearing in "The Sentimental Bloke" without permission Dennis purchased the remaining stock which is thought to have been pulped by George Robertson. It can therefore be assumed that approximately 2500 Paperbacks 450 Cloth and 60 Leather bound copies were sold'. Certainly one hundred years later copies in cloth are very scarce and the leather-bound edition is an absolute rarity. E.W. Cole, Book Arcade hardcover‎

‎'Colonel Light Gardens.' A Model Garden Suburb. Comfort Convenience Beauty‎

‎Adelaide: South Australian Government printed by Collotype Co. 1921. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Adelaide South Australian Government printed by Collotype Co. 1921. Small oblong octavo 8 pages plus a folding colour bird's-eye view of the suburb 'as it will appear when developed' 220 355 mm and a folding plan of the entire development area 225 362 mm but lacking the large centrefold map. This is referred to on the latter plan which has printed in the bottom margin: 'See enlarged plan at centre of brochure' below 'Portion left of dotted line now open for selection'. Saddle-stapled bright red wrappers with the full title lettered attractively in gilt on the front cover; small light tidemarks to the leading edge of both covers with minimal impact on the leading edge of the four leaves; text centrefold detached from the staples; trifling signs of age and use including a relatively modern inkstamp - LoGIC - inside the front cover and on the blank verso of the plan at the rear; overall a very good copy. The 'Beautiful track sic of country nestling at the foothills of Adelaide has . been chosen by the South Australian Government for the purpose of establishing a modern Garden Suburb. The design is the work of the Government Townplanner and embodies the most useful and proved ideals in present day townplanning practice. In honour of the memory of Colonel Light South Australia's First Surveyor General the suburb has been officially named "Colonel Light Gardens". Special attention is directed to the fact that the land is available for application by any person and is not set apart for the exclusive purpose of settling returned soldiers' introductory note. This last point is apposite: the land under development was 'late Mitcham Military Camp'. The man behind the plan was Charles Compton Reade 1880-1933 who was offered by the State Government of South Australia 'a new engagement as town planner from 1 July 1918 for a period of two years'. Frustrated by the realization that 'decent people cannot attempt to do decent work for the good of Australia without personal malice and misrepresentation to hinder them' he sought greener pastures. He 'was the first government town planner in the Federated Malay States in 1921-30 . From 1930 to 1933 he was director of town planning and development for the Protectorate of Northern Rhodesia . On 16 October 1933 Reade arrived in Johannesburg to become town planning expert for the Rand and Pretoria. He attended a meeting of the Witwatersrand joint town planning committee and offices were engaged for him. On Saturday 28 October he was found shot dead in his hotel room with a revolver beside him. Enquiries made by the "Rand Daily Mail" revealed that he had been "suffering from repeated attacks of malarial fever and was much depressed as a result"' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. His 'Model Garden Suburb' of Colonel Light Gardens seems a fitting memorial. South Australian Government (printed by Collotype Co.) paperback‎

‎DOUGLAS William Bloomfield‎

‎A reference written in Palmerston in the Northern Territory on 31 May 1871 for James Burton here presented as a carte de visite‎

‎The albumen paper photograph image size 92 57 mm is mounted on the card of 'B. Goode & Co. Photographic Artist 59 Rundle Street Adelaide' 102 64 mm. At the time William Bloomfield Douglas 1822-1906 was Government Resident of the Northern Territory; he had been appointed shortly after 'the return of Mr Goyder's surveying expedition to Adelaide in April 1870' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. Form and context as well as content make this an unusual reference: 'These are to certify that James Burton served under my orders in the Northern Territory of South Australia as the coxswain for the boats from the 24th of June 1870 to the date hereof when he leaves at his own request to proceed to Port Adelaide in the Government Schooner "Gulnare". During the above period James Burton conducted himself to my entire satisfaction. He exhibited great skill in the management of boats and from his knowledge of the coast was most useful in navigating the inlets leading into the interior of the country.'. Burton arrived at Port Darwin on the 'Gulnare' under Captain Samuel Sweet in March 1869; he departed in June 1871. He subsequently returned to Palmerston as part of the Overland Telegraph party under A.J. Mitchell embarking from Adelaide on the 'Omeo' in December 1871. Presumably the reference well-thumbed by the time Bernard Goode took its photograph was of benefit to him. Douglas was not so fortunate. 'He governed like a white rajah but lacked the competence to introduce a suitable administration. He squandered money ignored instructions and quarrelled with subordinates. He failed to control the gold rush which he encouraged and probably delayed the introduction of the 1872 mining regulations in order to protect his own investment. By early 1873 his ambitions were shattered and he had to be warned about his drinking. With a characteristic burst of energy he tried to put his administration in order but in June Thomas Reynolds the commissioner of crown lands visited Palmerston Darwin and Douglas had to resign. Douglas returned to Adelaide financially ruined. In April 1874 the government sent him to Singapore on a mission he had proposed in 1871 to recruit Chinese miners for the Northern Territory. Almost 200 came to Australia in the first group but Douglas stayed in Singapore where in October he became acting police magistrate and in May 1875 second police magistrate. As British control extended in the Malay States he became acting assistant resident of Selangor in November and acting resident in April 1876. Selangor flourished in spite of Douglas's shortcomings. His incompetence was soon discovered' and history repeated itself ADB. unknown‎
