Adelaide: Government Printer 1881. First Edition. Paperback. Adelaide Government Printer from 1881 to 1893. Foolscap folio 11 reports bound together with pagination ranging from 13 to 48 pages totalling 269 pages plus 8 folding maps and plans 4 in colour including a large and attractive bird's-eye view of the plantation at Wirrabara. Flush-cut quarter cloth and wrappers the original green printed wrappers of the first report have been mounted on thick paper and used as the binding for the run of reports with the spine reinforced with dark green cloth; all other reports are bound with their original wrappers with only the blank rear wrapper lacking from the second and last reports; a few covers are chipped marked or creased; one report is a little foxed; a few trifling signs of use and age but essentially an excellent run. The first two reports have 'with compliments' inscriptions possibly by George McEwin one of the board; the recipient's name has been erased. John Ednie Brown 1848-1899 sylviculturist was Conservator of Forests in SA 1878-1890 Director-General of Forests in NSW 1890-1895 and the first Conservator of Forests in WA 1896 until his untimely death from influenza in October 1899 aged 50. Bound in after the report for 1883-84 is another rare publication by Brown: 'Reports on planting Olives and Mulberries on Mallee Lands and Dates in the Far North; also Wattle Cultivation generally in the Colony.' Adelaide Government Printer 1884. Foolscap folio 3 8 pages plus a large folding map 530 580 mm. Original light blue title-wrappers lightly scored and marked; an excellent copy. South Australian Parliamentary Papers Number 178 and Number 179 of 1884; 2550 and 2450 copies printed respectively but decidedly uncommon in our experience. The map of the entire state shows 'some Waters suitable for Irrigation in the Northern portion of the Province' and printed in blue on it are the principal fresh-water springs north of Port Augusta which have 'more or less small areas of land in proximity' likely to be suitable for growing dates. These include Lungley's Gully Glen Ferdinand Titania Springs and the source of the Read Creek all in the Musgrave Ranges. A pencilled note on the front cover of this copy indicates that the Annual Report for 1884-85 not present in this run was 'in separate binding'. Government Printer paperback

Joanna especially found her moody wilful and argumentative. She loved music but was troubled by increasing deafness. Joanna took her daughter to Germany when she was 21 hoping to encourage her to study music and German only to discover that nothing could be done about her hearing and that she would soon become deaf. On their return to England Erlistoun appears to have suffered a breakdown followed by some mysterious dishonourable behaviour which both enraged and shamed her parents . She returned to Australia and in 1898 at the age of 30 married the Adelaide University Professor of Philosophy and English Literature William Mitchell bore two children and sadly died in her mid-forties from tuberculosis' University of Adelaide website. South Australian Portraits
'The Eucalypts 1910-1918. "With Gray Green Scimitars Defying The Sun"' cover title of an album of signed portrait photographs of worthy South Australians
Adelaide 1919. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Adelaide circa 1919. A custom-made photograph album 190 200 mm containing 6 card leaves with an original gelatin silver photograph mounted on both sides of each leaf with interleaved tissue-guards. Each photograph is approximately 135 95 mm. Half leather and cloth lettered in full in gilt on the front cover with 'The Eucalypts' in gilt on the spine; leather discoloured and moderately rubbed with slight wear in a few areas; some tiny paint spots near the head of the front cover; tissue-guards a little foxed and offset; marginal silvering-out to five prints; overall in very good condition. All but the first portrait is signed and only the last one contains an additional inscription the date '10.1.19'. The State Library of South Australia has another example of this album enabling us to confirm the identities where the handwriting was unclear. Ministers of religion lawyers doctors and architects predominate. The subjects are Reverend A.H. Gifford possibly A.E. Gifford; Benjamin Benny 1869-1935 senator and solicitor; George McEwin 1873-1945 lawyer and philanthropist; Edward Erskine Cleland 1869-1943 barrister and judge; Alfred McBain Bonython 1865-1954 architect; Sir James Wallace Sandford 1879-1958 merchant and politician; Reverend Wilfred Harris Unitarian minister returned to England in 1918; Dr Herbert Frank Shorney 1878-1933 opthalmologist; Sir Thomas John Mellis Napier 1882-1976 later a SA Supreme Court judge; Harold Reid; Edward Warner Benham 1872-1948 lawyer and academic; and Francis Hedley Counsell 1864-1933 architect. The subtitle is a misquote from 'Among the Sandhills' by Adela Florence Nicolson ne Cory 1865-1904 an English poet who wrote under the pseudonym Laurence Hope 'The scented orange bushes check the breeze Granting in tribute many waxen stars And aromatic Eucalyptus trees Defy the sun with grey-green scimitars'. We have saved the best until the end: we purchased this item decades ago and have postponed cataloguing it innumerable times not knowing who 'The Eucalypts' were. We have finally solved the puzzle by the simple expedient of spending untold hours on it. We eventually discovered the lengthy biographical sketch of Alfred Bonython compiled by Giles Walkley for the University of SA's database on architects accessible online. Among many other interesting details he records that 'At the age of 42 Bonython became the father of a fourth daughter . Determinedly reviving his literary activities he joined both at their outset in 1910 Lady Symon's Poetry Society and the "liberal Christian" discussion group The Eucalypts Club . SRG 252'. hardcover
