‎Photography. SMITH W. Ramsay‎

‎An original gelatin silver photograph 110 x 90 mm mounted on stiff card 220 x 170 mm inscribed in white ink on the mount beneath the photograph: 'With Christmas Greetings from Dr and Mrs Ramsay Smith'. It is stamped on the rear 'Photo. by Dr. W. Ramsay Smith' and captioned in his hand 'At Port Vila - New Hebrides'‎

‎Ramsay Smith describes 'picture-making' at Port Vila in detail in his 1924 book 'In Southern Seas' and this image contains all the elements referred to: one's wife 'for comparison and relief to the various objects in the picture' the harbour as background to the wooded heights the ship in the distance . The corners of the mount are slightly rounded and both the image and the mount are a little foxed; overall it is an attractive item with more than the usual amount of background information. William Ramsay Smith 1859-1937 physician naturalist anthropologist civil servant soldier - and controversy was often never far away see the Australian Dictionary of Biography. His entry there states that 'Believing that tribal Aborigines were dying out he recorded their folklore in 'Myths and Legends of the Australian Aborigines' London 1930. Subsequent to this being published Dr Philip Jones has also recorded in the ADB that from the early 1920s David Unaipon 1872-1967 the Aboriginal preacher author and inventor 'studied Aboriginal mythology and compiled his versions of legends . Gathered before 1930 the legends are in his surviving manuscript in the Mitchell Library: they were commissioned and published by William Ramsay Smith without acknowledgment'. unknown‎

Hugo pressed for a "bushmen's home" like a seamen's home as a quiet sober refuge. Opposition came from those who saw it as a squatters' movement but his canvassing bushmen's subscriptions and philanthropic support enabled the home to open in Whitmore Square Adelaide in May 1870' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. ‎The South Australian Colonist and Settler's Weekly Record of British Foreign and Colonial Intelligence. Volume 1 Number 1 Tuesday March 10 1840 to Volume 1 Number 22 Tuesday August 4 1840‎

‎London: 'Printed for the Proprietor by William Cecil Huttmann' 1840. First Edition. Hardcover. London 'Printed for the Proprietor by William Cecil Huttmann' 1840. Folio 352 pages 16 pages each issue. Early binder's cloth recently rebacked retaining the top two-thirds of the original spine; cloth marked and mottled with some neat restoration to the corners; edges a little marked; very light tidemarks to the leading edge of the front flyleaf and an initial blank; leading edge of the first few leaves of Number 22 slightly chipped; bottom left-hand corner piece missing from the last leaf with the loss of about 15 words of text and a small amount of the colophon which is the same in each issue; overall an excellent run of the first 22 issues of this very rare weekly newspaper which ceased publication with Volume 1 Number 29 on Tuesday September 22 1840. The prospectus appears on pages 7 and 8 of the first issue; the proprietors' object is 'not mercenary but patriotic . they are not the organs of any party . they will offer a fearless and uncompromising opposition to every deviation from the self-supporting principle on which South Australia is founded'. Their aim in part 'is to present an impartial record of the colonial intelligence . 1st from the colonial papers; 2ndly from direct correspondents in the colony and other exclusive sources'. Accordingly it contains much original material. The editor was John Stephens 1806-1850; 'about 1838 George Fife Angas employed him to write emigration propaganda. Stephens's first notable work was "The Land of Promise" republished in 1839 as "The History of the Rise and Progress of the New British Province of South Australia". In that year his exposure of absurdities in T. Horton James "Six Months in South Australia" London 1839 ran to three editions. He also edited the "South Australian Colonist" on which Angas lost heavily; it was replaced in 1841 by the monthly "South Australian News" at a cheaper rate' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. The ownership signature of Robert Kyffin Thomas is pencilled onto the front flyleaf and the blindstamp of the 'Register & Observer Office Adelaide' appears on an early blank leaf. Sir Robert Kyffin Thomas 1851-1910 the grandson of Robert Thomas who arrived on the 'Africaine' at Holdfast Bay in 1836 with a printing press was himself an influential newspaperman in the state. 'In 1877 he became the principal joint proprietor of the "South Australian Register" and as chief of staff he also edited the "Adelaide Observer". A parliamentary reporter he was in charge of the Hansard branch until 1882 when he became general manager of the "South Australian Register" which became the "Register" in 1901' ADB. Ferguson 3082. ‎GAWLER George. LESAGE Alain Rene‎

‎Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane‎

‎Paris: Librairie de A. Pougin 1837. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Paris Librairie de A. Pougin 1837. Duodecimo three volumes bound as one viii 233; iv 220 and iv 236 pages. Contemporary half calf and marbled papered boards; leather slightly rubbed and bumped with slight wear to the corners and light tidemarks to the leather on the panels near the spine; marbled paper heavily rubbed and a little marked; light waterstain to the top lefthand corner throughout the book and to the top righthand corner of the front half staining the leading edge a little; a very good copy. Inscribed in ink on an early binder's blank 'Bought at the sale / of Governor Gawler's effects / May 27 1841. J F'. Unfortunately it is not James Hurtle Fisher - we have checked! There are approximately 40 male JFs in the 1841 South Australian census and Fisher is not listed and easily half as many women so we leave the detective work to those with more spare time. A name on both the pastedown and front flyleaf has been blacked out at a very early stage; we suspect underneath the black ink it reads 'George Gawler' but again we leave the forensics to the experts. One thing we can say is that when Colonel George Gawler 1795-1869 was summarily dismissed from his post as South Australia's second governor on 11 May 1841 when Captain George Grey knocked on his door he lost no time in clearing the decks. The 'Register' of the following Saturday 22 May contains a large advertisement for a public sale to be conducted by the Adelaide Auction Company acting 'under instructions from Colonel Gawler to sell . on Wednesday next at twelve precisely his surplus Furniture and effects'. Before the 'very elegant and useful' carriage and 'A lot of pigs' but after the superb piano with 'extra set of Strings Oilcloth Cover Canterbury Tuning Key and pair of elegant Music Stools' a pair of globes 'iron bedsteads brass ornaments with mattress bolster and pillows' and '300 ounces of useful plate in spoons forks fish slices butter knives teapots ladles &c.' there are 'About 200 volumes of books'. This item is one of them. Consult the Australian Dictionary of Biography for the potted history of Gawler's 31 months in South Australia from his arrival in October 1838 with the task of rendering 'viable the experiment in systematic self-supporting colonization' until he was abandoned as the scapegoat under 'the combined weight of outraged Wakefield theorists commissioners anxious to whitewash themselves and enemies of the colony'. He left Adelaide a month later on the 'Dumfries'. This small volume with its curiously affecting inscription inserted on the day by someone with a sense of history in the making is a wonderful footnote to the story. Librairie de A. In replying to objections and in explaining the plan and in unfolding the prospects of the New Colony the Author was naturally and indeed necessarily led into discussions upon some of the fundamental doctrines of Political Economy. In some of these discussions as it is believed new and not unimportant views have been opened'. Not least he was the father of Sir Robert Richard Torrens the lands title law reformer after whom the Torrens system is named. Fox Maule 1801-1874 second Baron Panmure and eventually eleventh Earl of Dalhousie 'sat in the House of Commons in the liberal interest in 1835-7 as MP for Perthshire'; Torrens retired from the House in 1835. Arthur William Piper 1865-1936 was a South Australian Supreme Court judge; Sir Robert Kyffin Thomas 1851-1910 was general manager and joint proprietor of the South Australian 'Register'.
