The author spent most of his working life 'in the Government irrigation settlements as an Inspector then District Officer then Superintendent administering and managing those areas for the Department of Lands. Reference material cannot be widely quoted because very little is in published form. Also much of this history . has been compiled over the years starting in the 1950s from my personal notes writings and knowledge and other private sources'. The illustrations sourced in the main from the author's personal collection now dispersed are a significant contribution to the history of the Murray not least the riverboat trade. Adelaide-born John Augustus Bagshaw 1838-1920 was the eldest son of John Stokes Bagshaw 1808-1888 the pioneering agricultural machinery manufacturer who won public recognition by building for John Ridley the first harvesting machine. John Augustus 'was also a skilful engineer and inventor; he entered the business at an early age . The dedication to this pseudonymous work is by 'Aunt Sissie' whom we have identified as Lavinia Mary Scammell 1859-1915 the second of twelve children of Luther Scammell of Fauldings fame. This attribution appears not to have been made before. The manuscript is held by the State Library of South Australia in PRG 119: Papers of Mrs A.M. Madden. Item 112 in the list of papers is 'Manuscript of "Laughter and Life: a tale for the young" by Lavinia Mary Scammell. 1912. 3 cm. Typescript. Written by Sissie Scammell Red Gum Blossom with a dedication to her nieces and nephews 12 April 1912. This was published that year as "A little bit of laughter and life for the young" by Hussey & Gillingham and was set in Adelaide. Each chapter is sewn together and housed inside a red covered album.
