‎SCOTO Francesco (1548 - 1622)‎

‎Roma‎

Bibliografia Marigliani (2007) p. 209, n. 115. An oblique projection map of the city taken from "Itinerario, overo nova descrittione de' viaggi principali d'Italia [...] di Francesco Scoto" published in Venice by Pietro Brigonci in 1665. "Piazza Navona is prominently displayed with the obelisk found in the Circus of Maxentius and erected during the pontificate of Innocent X at the centre of Bernini's Fountain of the Rivers, inaugurated in 1651, but evidently already under construction in 1650. The church of Sant'Agnese in Agone (1652/57) and the colonnade of St. Peter's (1656/57) are instead missing'. [cf. Marigliani p. 209].  The plates published by Brigonci can be recognised by the square format of the prints. His first edition of the Itinerary of Italy was in 1665 and had the text taken from Cadorin's publication of 1659, which extended the story to Friuli, Sicily, Malta, Latium and the Holy Land, and in the same year a reprint also included plates on these territories. In 1670, 1673, 1676 and 1679 there were other editions by Brigonci, all Venetian, all with the unchanged title "Itinerario, overo nova descrittione de' viaggi principali d'Italia [...] di Francesco Scoto", all enriched with just under forty antique prints with views of cities. Copper engraving, in good condition. Literature Marigliani (2007) p. 209, n. 115.‎

It was published in a number of editions over a half century and was continuously revised and updated to include new illustrations and updated information. Sebastian Münster (1488-1552) was a cosmographer and professor of Hebrew who taught at Tübingen, Heidelberg, and Basel. He settled in the latter in 1529 and died there, of plague, in 1552. As a young man, Münster joined the Franciscan order and studied philosophy in Heidelberg. He also studied geography and mathematics in Loewen, as well as Hebrew at Freiburg. In 1512, he was ordained as a priest and taught philosophy and theology at Tübingen from 1514 to 1518. While in Tübingen, he also conducted further studies in geography. He moved to Basel in 1518 and published a Hebrew grammar, one of the first books in Hebrew published in Germany. In 1521 Münster moved again, back to Heidelberg, where he continued to publish Hebrew texts and the first German-produced books in Aramaic. After converting to Protestantism in 1529, he took over the chair of Hebrew at Basel, where he published his main Hebrew work, a two-volume Old Testament with a Latin translation. Münster made himself the center of a large network of scholars from whom he obtained geographic descriptions, maps, and directions. He published his first known map, a map of Germany, in 1525. Three years later, he released a treatise on sundials. In 1540, he published Geographia universalis vetus et nova, an updated edition of Ptolemy's Geographia. In addition to the Ptolemaic maps, Münster added 21 modern maps. One of Münster's innovations was to include one map for each continent, a concept that would influence Ortelius and other early atlas makers. The Geographia was reprinted in 1542, 1545, and 1552. Münster is best known today for his Cosmographia universalis, the first German-language description of the world. It was first published in 1554 and contained 471 woodcuts and 26 maps over 6 volumes. Many of the maps were taken from the Geographia and modified over time. It was released in at least 46 editions in 6 languages by 1650, with 21 German editions alone. The Cosmographia was widely used in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the text, woodcuts, and maps all influenced geographical thought for generations.".‎

Bibliografia Arrigoni Bertarelli (1930): n. 761; Marigliani (2007): p. 618, n. 579. Map of the seven jubilee churches of Rome, taken from Seutter's "Atlas Novus". The map outlines the itinerary of the Christian pilgrimage to the Seven Churches: the four major basilicas, St. John Lateran, St. Peter, St. Mary Major and St. Paul, to which St. Philip Neri added three more basilicas as pilgrimage destinations - St. Lawrence Outside the Walls, St. Croce in Jerusalem and St. Sebastian. Oriented with the east at the top, like most city maps produced in the 16th century, it lacks a correct perspective view, both in terms of proportions and distances. Moreover, the urban space is occupied, in a completely unreal way, almost exclusively by the churches. The seven main churches are represented considerably larger and show all the facades facing the observer. Very faithful derivation of the Jubilee map by Giacomo Lauro updated and reprinted by De Rossi in 1660 in which the captions in German have been placed side by side with those in Italian. The colonnade of St. Peter's, at the time of the prototype still under construction, appears more correctly depicted without the third arm closing the square. The coloring is very lively and represents the main characteristic of this work, as of many other works by Nordic publishers, who always copied their images from those of other authors, as the commercial purpose being their only interest (cf. Marigliani p. 618). Matthäus Seutter (1678 - 1757) was one of the most important and prolific German map publishers of the 18th century. Seutter was born the son of a goldsmith but apprenticed as a brewer. Apparently uninspired by the beer business, Seutter abandoned his apprenticeship and moved to Nuremberg where he apprenticed as an engraver under the tutelage of the prominent J. B. Homann. Sometime in the early 1700s Seutter left Homann to return to Augsburg, where he worked for the prominent art publisher jeremiad Wolff (1663 - 1724), for whom he engraved maps and other prints. Most of Seutter's maps are heavily based upon, if not copies of, earlier work done by the Homann and De L'Isle firms. Nonetheless, by 1731/32 Seutter was one of the most prolific publishers of his time and was honored by the German Emperor Karl VI who gave him the title of Imperial Geographer, after which most subsequent maps included the Avec Privilege designation. Etching, fine contemporary hand-colored, in excellent condition. Literature Arrigoni Bertarelli (1930): n. 761; Marigliani (2007): p. 618, n. 579.‎

The map derives from that of Giovan Battista Falda of 1676, of which it is a faithful and accurate reduction. Although printed around 1725, probably on the occasion of the Jubilee given the inclusion of the Seven Basilicas, it depicts the city around 1676. The work in fact does not contemplate the architectural innovations to the city during the pontificate of Innocent XII, nor the Port of Ripetta of 1704. It still shows the third arm of the closing of the colonnade of St. Peter, never realized. In the upper left corner views of the Seven Main Churches and on the right the coat of arms of Pope Benedict XIII (1724-1730). On the lower left is a list of the XIV districts and on the right a brief description of the city entitled Rom. At the bottom an allegorical scene with river gods. ‎A Pictorial Map of Peiping in Full Colours.‎

‎Peiping.: Peiyang Press. circa1934. Coloured folding plan of Peking with original envelope. 60 x 50cm. A few neat repairs at folds two panels evenly browned on reverse. A very good copy of a scarce pictorial plan with its envelope. This delightful and scarce pictorial map of Peking with landmarks and streets in romanised Chinese with occasional Chinese characters is surprisingly scarce. Although apparently issued in several editions in the 1920s and 30s it appears relatively infrequently on the market. The divisions of the Legation District are indicated by their flags - this edition shows the German Legation by use of the black white and red bands of the German flag. This flag which was no longer used after 1935 helps date this edition. Other landmarks and attractions shown included theatres foreign shopping area adjacent to the legations quarter Liu Li Chang Curio District the racecourse the many city gates etc. .

Rara. Etching, circa 1645/50, signed on the lower right-hand plate. Unusual panoramic view of the city, with a view of various monuments, described in a 9-point legend at the bottom in Italian and French, including: 1. Vestigij del Tempio della Pace . 2. Chiesa di S.ta Francesca Romana . 3. Vigna Fanesia . 4. Vestigij del Palazzo Maggiore. 5. Vestigij della Casa di Cicerone. 6. St. Maria liberatrice . 7. St. Pietro Montorio. 8. Frontespitio dell'Acqua Paula. 9. Colonne restate del Tempio di Giove Statore. The Basilica, in the foreground, is drawn in great detail, as is the panorama of the city, where numerous architectural works are recognisable. As with the general view of Rome, this panorama was probably engraved "from a drawing made ad vivum by L. de Lincher, a little-known French draughtsman who was active in Rome in those years and supplied his drawings to various engravers, including his fellow countryman Francois Collignon" (cf. Barbara Jatta in "Roma Veduta" p. 164). Silvestre, engraver and draughtsman, was born in Nancy in 1621. Between 1638 and 1641 he travelled in Italy; there are records of his presence in the Peninsula again in 1643 and 1653. His style was rather loose at first, but from 1643 onwards it became more refined and delicate, acquiring accuracy and precision without being dry, sometimes resembling that of Jacques Callot or Stefano della Bella, with whom he was friends. Alongside the evidence for ancient Rome, he soon showed great interest in the "modern" city, becoming one of the forerunners of vedutism - not only in the field of engraving - anticipating artists such as Lievin Cruyl and Gaspar van Wittel. Beautiful proof, with wide margins, vertical folds due to storage - folded several times and stored in the album - in excellent condition. Rare.‎

‎Panorama di Roma da Monte Mario‎

‎Acquaforte, 1642, firmata in lastra in basso. Molto rara. Bibliografia Le Blanc III, p. 508, 224; Roma Veduta, pp. 164-165, n. 24; Faucheaux, Catalogue raisonné de l’oeuvre d’Israel Silvestre, 28 II/II. Etching, 1642, signed on lower plate.Beautiful work, printed on contemporary laid paper, wide margins, in very good condition. First, in chronological order, of the four panoramas dedicated by the French artist to the city.  The engraving is the first large view of Rome made by Israel Silvestre a few years after his arrival in the city. This is taken from the slopes of Monte Mario and the panorama ranges from the Porta del Popolo to the Vatican complex. The oblong format and the choice of the viewpoint will be largely taken up by the artists who followed. The view was engraved from a drawing made ad vivum by L. de Lincher, a little-known French artist who was active in Rome in those years and supplied his drawings to various engravers, including his fellow countryman Francois Collignon (cf. Barbara Jatta in "Roma Veduta" p. 164) Silvestre, engraver and draftsman, was born in Nancy in 1621. His style was, at the beginning, rather loose, but from 1643 onwards he became more refined and delicate, acquiring accuracy and precision without being dry, sometimes similar to that of Jacques Callot or Stefano della Bella, with whom he had friendly relations. ‎SILVESTRE Israel (Nancy, 1621 - Parigi, 1691).‎

Barbara Jatta in "Roma Veduta" p. 167). 122 Etching, about 1652, without signature on the plate where we find only the indication of the privilege. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, later hand colour, with margins, in perfect condition. Panoramic view of Rome taken from the Orti Farnesiani, with the Roman Forum in the foreground. The heraldic coat of arms of Louis XIV, with the arms of France and Navarre, is engraved in the center with the inscription Dédié au Roy. The layout of this view of Campo Vaccino, dedicated to Louis XIV, ranging from the Capitol to the Basilica of Maxentius, belongs to the second phase of his production, marked by extreme precision in the representation of the buildings. It is likely that the artist chose as a point of view the Horti Farnesiani on the Palatine, which allowed him a view of the city from above. In addition to the depiction of ancient monuments, the view is characterized, albeit in the background, by the presence of numerous modern buildings in the north-eastern area of Rome, including the church of S. Maria di Loreto, Villa Medici, the Quirinale and the palace of Cardinal Mazzarino at the Quattro Fontane (see Barbara Jatta in "Roma Veduta" p. 167). Silvestre, engraver and draftsman, was born in Nancy in 1621. Between 1638 and 1641 he traveled in Italy; we have news of his presence in the Peninsula again in 1643 and 1653. His style was, at the beginning, rather loose, but from 1643 onwards became more refined and delicate, acquiring accuracy and precision without being dry, resulting sometimes similar to that of Jacques Callot or Stefano della Bella, with whom he had relationships of friendship. ‎SILVESTRE Israel (Nancy, 1621 - Parigi, 1691).‎

‎Acquaforte, 1652, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a sinistra Israel SIlvestre delineavit et sculpt. l'anne 1652 in Parigi. Etching, 1652, signed and dated on the plate at lower left Israel SIlvestre delineavit et sculpt. l'anne 1652 in Parigi. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, with wide margins, in perfect condition. Unusual panoramic view of the city, taken from the slopes of the Vatican hill - outside Porta Cavallegeri as indicated in the title - with a magnificent and accurate detail of the Vatican Basilica before Bernini's colonnade (1665). In the upper center, in a cartouche with the heraldic coat of arms of Louis Hesselin we find the dedication of Jean Vivot: Illustrissimo Nobillissimoque Domino. D. Hesselin Regi the Secretioribus Consilijs, Palatij, et Camerae denariorum Magistro Observantissimus Seruus J. Viuot Dicat.  It is likely that Vivot, a common gentleman of the King's chamber, appointed in 1670 as keeper of antiques, commissioned Silvestre this view to dedicate it to Louis Hesselin, Seigneur de Condé French aristocrat, government official, patron and collector.  Silvestre, engraver and draftsman, was born in Nancy in 1621. Barbara Jatta in "Roma Veduta" p. 168). Etching, circa 1646, signed in plate at lower left. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, with wide margins, in perfect condition. Unusual panoramic view of the city, taken from the Vatican Hill. The Basilica, in the foreground, is drawn with great detail, as well as the panorama of the city, where many architectural works are recognizable. The choice of the point of view of this Roman view, taken from the Vatican Hill, behind St. Peter's Basilica, is unusual. Also in this work, always very detailed according to the typical style of the artist, the influence of Callot's engravings is strong, both in the language and in the construction of the view, as confirmed by the foreground with the Vatican walls (see Barbara Jatta in "Roma Veduta" p. 168). Alongside the evidence for ancient Rome soon showed a great interest in the city "modern", becoming one of the precursors of vedutismo - not only in the field of engraving - anticipating artists such as Lievin Cruyl and Gaspar van Wittel.
