NOUVELLE ETUDE SUR LA CHANSON D'ANTIOCHE
Paris: Leon Techener 1878. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Good. 14 Cms x 22 .5 Cms. 51pp clean and unmarked but fairly severe edge-browning throughout with chipping top corners half-title t.p. & 1st leaf; unprinted green paper wraps fairly clean but frankly tatty esp. front with both outer corners chipped off plus piece of bottom edge sp.ends chipped and sp.region darkened back not so bad if its any consolation. Embracing America; A Cuban Exile Comes of Age
Gainesville FL: University Press of Florida 2002. First Printing Stated. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Elena Maza cover paintings and Margaret Paris P. xxiv 226 6 pages. Illustrations. Chronology. Appendix. Notes. Signed by Margaret L. Paris and Elena Maza on the title page. Elena Maza Borkland was 13 years old when she fled Cuba with her two sisters in a political exodus known as "Operation Pedro Pan." Although she settled near Washington D.C. her grandfather's tropical fruit trees back in Cuba would later inspire a passion for sketching and painting flowers and plants. Elena didn't study art until after college. And it wasn't until she had worked for an architect and an electrical engineer that she embraced plein air painting. It's easy to trace a line from the disciplines of architecture and engineering to the delicate intricacy of Elena's work. The minutiae matter to her. From angel trumpets to flame azaleas Elena depicts not just the natural beauty she finds while exploring but the blooms she grows in her own garden. The watercolor work we feature here is titled "American Wisteria." This native American genus of Wisteria was named "2021 Plant of the Year" by the Virginia Native Plant Society and the society asked Elena for a rush illustration using a photo reference. But we shouldn't be surprised if she's now growing a real-life specimen in her garden. "Elena Maza's fascinating odyssey is a story at once heart-rending and inspiring exploring with the utmost candor the pain of exile and resettlement and the ongoing conversation with Cuba and Cuban identity. It carries the power of the personal testimony and the sweeping scope of the family saga."--from the foreword by Miguel A. Bretos Smithsonian Institution. From a child refugee of Operation Pedro Pan a mission similar to the Kindertransport of World War II and the only political exodus ever of unaccompanied children in the Western Hemisphere comes this touching tale of adventure and coming of age in America. After Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba more than 14000 children unaccompanied by their parents were airlifted to the United States in a controversial effort to provide an opportunity for a better life. This book is Elena Maza's page in that great collective story masterfully captured in a series of interviews. In 1961 at the age of thirteen Elena Maza and her two sisters left their parents in Cuba and were placed in foster homes in the United States. Eventually reunited with her parents who also managed to immigrate Embracing America is the story of the Maza family's survival and Elena's adaptation to life in the United States. Ironically Elena left a Marxist revolution to encounter a social one: a civil rights struggle an anti-Vietnam war insurgency a women's movement a sexual revolution and the drug culture of the 1960s and 1970s. From childhood exile through the Woodstock Nation to the rediscovery of her Cuban identity marriage and the earned respect of the Washington and New York arts and community advocacy scenes Elena Maza emerges as a remarkable woman who was one of the participants in the significant historical events of the last century. Margaret Paris is a writer and photographer who teaches at Georgetown University and the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington D.C. University Press of Florida hardcover
