Autograph Document Signed
This influential Ohio politician judge and educator -- originally from Connecticut and an acquaintance of George Washington -- helped to write and sign that state's Constitution; an ardent Abolitionist he drafted the Constitution in such a way as to prohibit slavery in Ohio; later a trustee of Ohio University. ADS 1p 8" X 6�" Ames Ohio 1803 January 13. Good plus. Some edgewear and irregular mild age toning. An important regional document establishing the first teaching position in Ames Township southern Ohio signed by Cutler and six early settlers. Reads in full: "Whereas it being very essential to promote Virtue secure happiness both public and private that Schools and the means of Instructions Should be supported therefore we the subscribers agree to pay to Charles Cutler fourteen dollars per month for Teaching a school at Ames for the three Insuing months and will pay in proportion to each scholar we shall anex to our names the payments to be made to E Cutler in labour or produce at cash price Said E Cutler having become responsible to said Charles Cutler for the same." Cutler himself thus signs three times twice in the text and once at the top of the list along with "6 Scholar". Six other Ames pioneers sign below him. In order: 1. BENJAMIN BROWN 1745-1817 a "Minute Man" in the American Revolution who fought at Bunker Hill captain in the Eighth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers; moved to Ames in 1799 a prominent local resident who held different township offices; father of General John Brown. 2. GEORGE EWING himself a former schoolteacher had served in the Continental Army. 3. RACHEL LENOX. 4. BENJAMIN L. BROWN. 5. SILVANUS AMES 1771-1823 "Judge Ames" a famed local jurist and the second sheriff of Ames County; long-time Ohio University trustee. 6. WILLIAM GREEN. Note that both a "Benja'n Brown" and a "Benja. L Brown" sign; given Benjamin Brown signs first after Cutler and just before Ewing we believe that this first Brown is the reknowned Captain Brown. Cutler and Ewing first set up this community in 1799 and along with Captain Brown and Judge Ames are considered the town's founding fathers. "Schools of an elevated character" Ephraim Cutler wrote elsewhere "were soon established." In 1802 the first one-room school cabin was established on Cutler's property with Charles Cutler -- A Harvard College graduate presumably related to Ephraim -- as the first teacher. Hard currency was in notoriously short supply at the time so payment "in labour or produce" would have been a typical arrangement. This document would appear to be hiring him for his second term there. A delightful and rare item establishing one of the region's first schools. unknown

Popular novelist and short story writer whose umpteen volumes include "The Wayfarers" "The Unforeseen" and "The Suburban Whirl." Two items: First an ANS 1p 5" X 6�" Orange NJ 1923 January 16. Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. Near fine. In response to a request for an original working draft page of a manuscript Cutting cordially replies: "Will the enclosed serve your purpose It is rather more legible than most!" Signed boldly in full. Second an AMS 1p 8" X 10" n.p. n.y. Very good. Mild edge wear and a bit of age toning. On cheap lined paper Cutting has hurriedly penned in black ink some lines from a story complete with a few crossouts and additions. Along the top she has added "From / Fairy Godmother / story finished March 1920. Published in Woman's Home Companion" and at the bottom she signs in full. If this example is as Cutting notes "rather more legible than most" we would hate to see one of her less legible pages! Nice example of a working draft from a popular ladies author of the turn of the century. Accompanied by Johannsen's original 8�" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown

Noted Presbyterian preacher and author affiliated with the Lafayette Avenue Church in Brooklyn New York. ALS 2pp 1st and 3rd leaves 5" X 8" Brooklyn NY 1865 November 27. Addressed to George May Powell. Very good. Powell a photographer had sent Cuyler a print of a large photo montage he was marketing "Being a group of Portraits of all those members of Congress who voted for the AMENDMENT of the CONSTITUTION PROHIBITING SLAVERY with those of President LINCOLN and Vice-President HAMLIN added." Cuyler's response is the "blurb" Powell had requested for use in a leaflet he was preparing advertising this photograph: "The likenesses are excellent; the idea is happy -- and the engraving ought to be on every loyal citizens' wall. 'Honor to whom honor is due'. And on that roll who deserve better from a grateful country than the Congress which put slavery into its charnel-house. It deserves a place beside my 'Emancipation Proclamation' of dear departed Lincoln." On the blank fourth leaf Cuyler adds and initials a sentiment: "Our temperance cause brightens. Family members mentioned also include Whitlock Hornbeck Cuddeback Davis Shepperd and many many more names are mentioned of family friends and acquaintances. This will be a treasure for area historians or genealogists. There are 5 diaries by Cynthia Dunham Arnold from 1879 1884 1886 1892 and 1893. Cynthia is a detailed diarist providing details of weather work and local history and social events. There is an 1868 diary by her father Daniel Arnold which of more sporadic in entries and mostly work related. This is a great history covering the post-Civil War era. 1942 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF YOUNG LOVING AND DEVOTED HOUSEWIFE AND MOTHER IN NEW YORK AS THE WAR BEGINS TO AFFECT THE DAILY LIVES OF THOSE ON THE HOMEFRONT
CORNING NEW YORK NY. Good. 1942. On offer is a lovely 1942 slice-of-life diary of by a young housewife Cyrena Coles living in Corning New York with her husband Herman and her two teenage children Kate and Billy. Her entries are for the most part matter of fact statements on the day�s events and observations. Many of them seem to be written many times during the course of the day as it is common to see different ink colors used throughout a single entry. Though the book is a 5-year diary Coles only uses it for the year 1942. The book was most likely carried around on Mrs. Coles�s person at most times of the day. Most of the entries are filled with details of events throughout the day while others merely record a statement or two. Each entry usually contains the day of the week and weather as well. Mrs. Coles spends her days caring for her husband and her children writing almost as much about about their whereabouts and their lives as she does her own. She speaks fondly of her friends and husband and seems to be a kind and matronly presence to them. Occasionally weddings funerals and events outside of the immediate family environment. She also speaks occasionally of World War 2 going on around the world and its impact on life in America. Talk of ration cards and the restrictions they put on her family come up every once and while. Mrs. Coles two sons would eventually join the Army one fighting in the European theatre and the other in the Pacific. She also often mentions the Corning Glassworks the glass and ceramics manufacturer that the town was and still is most known for and for which it seems her husband works for. The back of the book contains lists of presents given and received and their prices as well as a few pages of lists of items bought and their prices as well. The diary is in good condition. The cover and spine is full leather and shows little evidence of wear or marks. The cover also contains a metal latch in order to lock the diary shut however the corresponding piece of leather which would�ve been locked into it is missing. Inside the pages are still in good condition showing little discoloration wear marks of aging or rips/tears. The handwriting is legible and readable throughout in blue ink with only small areas showing fading or smudging though these defects do not affect the legibility of the words. OVERALL: G. Text: �June 13 1942. Billy goes to work at store 9am. Expects to quit to-night go to factory if he can. Herman work on Production Club outing house at 3: to take Bath and change his clothes. Billy home just before. It is terrible muggy rain stops very hot.Herman home at 9:30. Billy home to supper. We eat to-gether. We go to Bar-B-Q late nearly 12: While we are there large crowd. When we return Herman calls Billy at store not to go to Elmira with boys. He doesn�t comes right home. �August 14. Stop in here at 2:30 visit until Herman starts painting front porch at 4:30. Billy goes back to school at 7 at nite for trial typing test. We go out at nite and I get Ice Cream at Hanns. We have Roast supper. Kate goes down to her sister. Goes for another Bowling Party at nite.�; �September 9. First bomb landed on U.S. Mainland in Oregon. Set woods a fire. Billy out at nite.�; October 12. I hang clothes on line that didn�t get dry yesterday. Herman called about No. on Ration Card. Kate gets letter from Del. Billy goes to Elmira last nite in Packard with fellow who works at Eclipse in Elmira Cobgrove and girl with Billy named McLaychok. Kate in here to visit at nite. Billy home. Payne call K late at nite about wish to see rooms to paper.�; �Billy works at store at nite. Kate went with us at nite. We don�t go for groceries. We go for short ride get Ice Cream. Elizabeth & Myron Fuller have baby son to-day. 20 were poisoned at Glassworks Lunch room. Effie�s boy one of them taken to Hospital also Mrs. Kiesler.
