Fredrickson N. Jaye. Catalogue of the exhibition by Sandra Gibb. Foreword by John E. Langdon.
THE COVENANT CHAIN: INDIAN CEREMONIAL AND TRADE SILVER.
Ottawa: National Museum of Man 1980. 168 pp large 8vo 9 3/8" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "Indian trade silver is a fascinating and little-known part of our cultural heritage - a product of the interaction between two profoundly different cultures during the European exploration of North America. Originating in the early diplomatic gifts of medals to friendly Indians the distribution of silver became widespread during the height of the fur trade 1760 to 1821. Silver ornaments designed specifically for the fur trade included brooches gorgets armbands legbands earrings nose-rings crosses and headbands. A travelling exhibition of over two hundred of these ornaments was organized by the National Museum of Man Ottawa and this book was written to accompany it. Previously known only to scholars and collectors this unusual art form has now become accessible to a much wider public. The silver ornaments created for the fur trade were produced by both European and colonial silversmiths but the Iroquois began to make similar pieces for their people after silver ceased to be available through the fur trade. Although the craft died out it has recently been revived and the exhibition includes many examples of modern Iroquois workmanship. Some pieces are based on traditional trade-silver patterns but others are of the silversmiths' own design. The book illustrates and describes all the silver chosen for the exhibition from museums in Canada and the United States. Paintings and portraits of the period show the colourful and unexpected ways the Indians wore their silver jewellery." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Minor rubbing fading to colour on rear hinge area light browning at top of flaps. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good-. Shield of Republic / Sword of Empire: A Bibliography of United States Military Affairs 1783-1846
New York/Westport CT/London: Greenwood Press 1990. NOT a library discard. Near Fine condition. NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are fresh crisp clean and unmarked. 6786 entries. Volume 15 from the publisher's BIBLIOGRAPHIES AND INDEXES IN AMERICAN HISTORY series. Name index. Subject index. Bound in the original green cloth stamped in bright white. From the publisher: "Between the Revolution and the Mexican war the American republic grew from being a collection of weakly unified states to being a formidable world power. This bibliographic volume covers the first sixty years of United States military history from 1783 to 1846 a time that has been largely neglected in historical scholarship. The entire range of military affairs from international diplomacy and ideological considerations to influential presidents secretaries and military and naval personalities is treated in detail throughout this comprehensive bibliography. By addressing Shay's Rebellion the Indian Wars of the Old Northwest the Tripolitan War and other political and diplomatic events the volume helps to put into context the military trends and activities of an important historical period. Each of the book's chapters has its own distinct format but all are linked through an extensive network of cross references. The first chapter provides a general overview of the entire period detailed chronologically with separate listings for wars and events and appropriate subheadings for politics and diplomacy prisoners and contemporary accounts. Chapters two and three cover the United States Army and Navy respectively and group their listings around subjects such as history policy administration personnel and deployment. The fourth chapter uses a subject and subtopic format in covering the militia Canada and Indians and the final chapter provides an alphabetical listing of biographies. Extensive author and subject indexes are included.". First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine condition/No dust jacket as issued. FREEMAN Douglas Southall 1886 1953
Typed Note Signed
This "historian's historian" was by day the long-time editor of "The Richmond News Leader" and a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning Southern historian during his free time ! producing among others the highly-regarded 4-volume "R.E. Lee: A Biography" 1935 "The South to Posterity: An Introduction to the Writing of Confederate History" 1939 3-volume "Lee's Lieutenants: A Study in Command" 1942-44 and 6-volume "George Washington" 1948-54. TNS 1p 8" X 11" Richmond VA 15 December 1934. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Near fine. On "The Richmond News Leader" letterhead Freeman simply notes "I have pleasure in attaching my 'book' autograph as requested." Word "book" inserted in ink. He signs with his usual miniscule cursive "D.S. Freeman" in black ink -- then near the blank lower portion of this sheet he signs a second time using the extremely different and quite vertical printed "Douglas Southall Freeman" signature he reserved for signing books -- which also clarifies the confusion experienced by those accustomed to only seeing this upright full signature when encountering the more "normal" rightward-slanting cursive with which Freeman signed his name to letters and anything other than his own books! This most unusual letter is accompanied by an outstanding high quality NOT mass-produced black-and-white 8" X 10" photograph of Freeman -- a formal studio portrait of Freeman in suit and tie in profile facing right his chin resting on his right hand with index finger extended onto cheek. A superb and quite scarce pair. Freeman letters are rarely encountered and this double-signed example is especially interesting. unknown
