‎GEORGE DRESSER SMITH‎

‎1900 AND 1913 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT EUROPEAN TRAVEL DIARY AND BOSTON AREA RELIGIOUS STUDIES WITH REVEREND BROADHEAD TALBOT AND ADDISON‎

‎S.S. OCEANIC CHICAGO ILLINOIS BOSTON MASS. Very Good. 1900. Leather. On offer are two handwritten manuscript diaries written by George Dresser Smith of Chicago Illinois. In the first diary a lovely journal style leather notebook George identifies himself on the fep. We believe he is a young man perhaps mid teens traveling with his family from New York City on August 18th 1900 on the steamer Oceanic. George details a very comprehensive 'classic' European tour for two full months but the writing ends abruptly on October 18th 1900 the date being handwritten but nothing else on this day and the rest of the book is blank. The second diary is a cheap notebook style paper cover journal. Unnamed and undated the handwriting is most certainly the same yet more mature. George at this point in his life is working/mentoring/studying with Dr. Addison Dr. Talbot and Dr. Broadhead in and around Boston but they seem to make many trips back and forth to New York. It appears that the doctors are Reverends and from Sunday April 6th through Wednesday May 21st George works lives and studies among them. Research suggests this journal may be penned in 1913 having the correct correlation of day to date. Further research may bear more precise information. Here is a snippet: "Pleasant and warm day. Went down to boat to go to island of Marcolm where the inhabitants had made no progress for 200 years. They wore bright colors and wooden shoes. All home made and lived in small houses with no chimneys." "When we arrived we took a carriage and went to the church of St Ursula where we saw the bones and sculls of the 7000 vergins who went to Rome and were killed on their way back besides some beautiful glass windows" VG.; 16mo - over 5" - 6" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF RELIGION CHRISTIANITY CHRISTIAN STUDIES AMERICANA Personal Memoir Travel Handwritten hand written autograph autographs signed letters document documents manuscript manuscripts writers writer author holograph personal Americana Chicago Steamship Europe Religion Catholic Catholocism antiquit contrat vlin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito . hardcover‎

‎GEORGE E. COWELL‎

‎1865 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A 22 YEAR OLD CIVIL WAR VETERAN AND PENSIONER‎

‎TOWANDA PENNSYLVANIA. Very Good. 1865. On offer is an original manuscript Civil War Era diary dated 1865 handwritten by George E. Cowell who lived near Towanda Pennsylvania. About 22 years old at the writing George had been a soldier in Co C 141st Infantry Pennsylvania. It appears that he had been discharged from the army when he wrote the diary making note of receiving a pension. He often noted meeting with his brethren. He made mention of the war and Lincoln's death several times. He was very sick with the measles when Lincoln was assassinated. Here are some snippets: April 4 It cleared up. At work for Mr Bradford with his son. Was siding and putting on roof boards. Tired at night. Got the news that Richmond was taken. April 10 Past a restless night. Went out hunting with Dr and Charly. Killed 2 duck and meadow larks. Was worse went to bed. They were celebrating the victory all over in hearing by firing. April 15 In the morning early my measles went back. Ch was scart. He had hardwork to get them out again but I survived after being very sick & the room got warm. April 16 G. Worth came over. I was up about half the time. Went out to the barn felt smart only my eyes were weak. Feeling very sad over Linkolns sic death. April 17 Eyes still weak. About home and went down to Mr Collins at night with Ch. It rained coming home. Eyes grew worse. Found bretheran belonging to the ____ here the author drew a symbol which resembles 2 sets of crossed lines with a C O in the middle. April 19Found my eyes better. Went in to see Mrs Edwards. Took dinner with her. Had a good time. A Linkoln funeral was preached. I went to hear Rev Mr Sherman deliver a discourse on the death of Linkoln. Jan 18 Went to Bishops & someone stole our boat & took it across the river. Came home again and went to Meadsville after Phil and went to the lodge. Ella got her knee hurt. Feb 11 About the bench. Phil and I bought father out for 410.00. Bradley drew up the papers. Mar 16 Sold my place to John Evans. Got 305.00. Sold cow and calf to Phil for 45.00. Went down to Kilmers at night to a party. Mar 17 About home. River very high and still rising. Phil Ella Tim and I went down to Smith's to see it. Mar 19 Pleasant. Went up on the hills. Went to prayer meeting at night. Phil and family went up to Towanda to Leila Means funeral. E J C broke in the home and got some of her things and took money out of Phils pocket book." It is around this time that Mr Cowell took a trip to Minooka with Charly. He stopped at several cities along the way and wrote daily about the trip. He described Oil City Pa as a "stink hole" and sometimes complained about the rate for an overnight room. It appears that the author had relatives in Minooka. He stayed until May working while he was there. "On the trip Ch came down with the measles. Mar 30 Rode around with ER to see the country. Wrote to HSH and Phil. CH broke out nicely with the measles. He got up and fainted dead away. Went to a lecture at night. Went there with a widow. May 13 Cold and windy. Worked 3/4 of the day with the corn sheller. Received 1.50 recompense. 4 Bretheran of us met in the Hotel at night. Sherman Darlan Beal and I. Oct 16 Made Ella a cabbage cutter. Went to Towanda. Bot saw and oil can. Got my pension money 21.25. Dr Turner cut me down to 1/2 pension. Came to JR Cowell at night." The diary has an entry for every day although in the summer months it was often just a couple lines about the farm work he did that day. He did write of his social life which seemed to involve the ladies. The name "Mary Lewis" appears more than once. In the memorandum section are some lines written by friends. The author also kept an accounting record in the cash account section. Included with the diary are two small envelopes from the Office of G.E. Cowell MD of Elwood Il which were for holding prescription powders. These must have belonged to a relative that he visited in Illinois. Also in the diary is a handwritten paper listing "Names of Battles and Horses". The diary is written in pencil and some pages are light but legible. The handwriting takes some getting used to and he wasn't the best speller but I was able to read it without much difficulty. The diary itself is in very good condition.; Manuscript; 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OFTOWANDA RICHMOND LINCOLNS DEATH CIVIL WAR 141ST INFANTRY PENNSYLVANIA CIVIL WAR ERA GEORGE E. George was once a teacher; now he crisscrosses Connecticut as he sells needles then oranges then stationery then back to needles. George has an oyster breakfast at Branford and then goes oystering in Guilford on Long Island Sound. Then on to Saybrook and Deep River. Walked to East Lyme then over to New London. He notes that he has turned 31 and is just a peddler! He watches a Republican torchlight parade in New Britain Oct. 16 Democratic procession Oct. 23. ‎GEORGE E. APPLEGATE‎

‎1935 ORIGINAL UNUSUAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A BRASH BROOKLYNITE WHO CONFIDES IN HIS DIARY PERHAPS TOO MUCH GIVEN HIS UNHAPPINESS AND THE TRAGEDIES THAT BEFALL‎

‎BROOKLYN NY. Good. 1935. On offer is a diary of a man living in the midst of the Great Depression in New York City. Measuring 6 inches by 4 inches the diary contains 365 pages plus memoranda. It is about 55% complete. The cover binding and pages are all in good condition. The handwriting is small but neat and readable. The author of the diary was George E. Applegate. He was born in New Mexico in 1913. His father Morrow Applegate was a sales representative for auto parts firms. Applegate passed away in 1980 at the age of 67. He had worked for 27 years at Bankers Trust Company in New York and moved to Santa Fe in 1972. He was actively involved in cultural and civic life of the city and in 1978 with his daughter Nancy purchased the oldest Santa Fe's bookstore Villagra. He was a president and treasurer for 30 years of Gilbert and Sullivan society of New York and a member of D'Oyly Carte Opera Trust. At the time of writing he was 21 years old living at home with his parents in New York City. Applegate was working at the Kings County Savings Bank in Brooklyn. The bank is long gone but its 4 story French Second Empire-style building remains having been designated a New York City landmark and been added to the National Register of Historic Places. His entries are filled with comments about his work and about his new role as a member of a Freemason Lodge. In fact the year opens with him involved in some controversy at the Lodge: ". Dad phoned Mr. Bowers to have me go to Anglo-Saxon Lodge which I did. Henry C. Turner installed their officers. Considered the offence" an act of subversion to the principals of Freemasonry". Jan 2; "Expected to work late tonight but had to get home to put on my tux for my first Lodge meeting as an officer. Left bank about 7 and Eppers objected saying I will have to bring tux in and dress there in the future. ." Jan3. He is very close to his grandmother and is quite affected when she passes away: "Rain! Stopped at grandma's on my way home. She's in bed for the first time quite sick. Was up yesterday. Asked if I got my raise yet and if I had come "for the last look". I couldn't keep smiling tears came into my eyes instead when she said she hopes I'll be a fine man. I am a "fine young man." She asked ma "Did the doctor tell you the time" "What time mother" "When I'm going to go" was her reply! I said "goodnight grandma" on leaving and she said "Goodnight George goodnight." Mother staying there again with them. Uncle George and Aunt Ella drove me home said tonight Anna is improving. I prayed as I have so often done that grandma may be spared much suffering if she actually has cancer which we all doubt. She has had no pain yet and hasn't lost much weight" Jan 14; "Right home for supper mother not here. To grandma's a little before 8. Met Uncle George and Aunt Ella coming out. "Well it's all over" they said. "She died at quarter past six." Went upstairs and saw her her jaw tied up her hands folded. Had been awake all night last night had a tough time and knew she was dying. Some of her remarks were heartbreaking. "So many nice things to do but it's too late now." "You're not afraid of death are you" She kissed mother Nan and Uncle G. and said "Goodbye" "forever" she added to Nan. They sat with her and held her hand right up until the end. Uncle George came back said Tanta Anna is worse and will not live through the night!." Jan 15; ". Eve. The funeral servicesI was alone there for a while when the others went out to supper. Stood at Grandma's coffin and gazed at her in an attitude which I shall probably always remember" Jan 17. His maternal grandmother Elizabeth Corlett Craigen and another family member Anna Stratmann Thomas died with one day difference. Elizabeth Craigen was a wife of George J. Craigen a president of Lennox and Craigen brick companies and an assistant chief clerk of the New York Tax Department. Anna was a daughter of a surgical instruments importer Ernst Stratmann a noted resident of Flatbush. George often expresses dislike for his job and is critical of some of his co-workers: "Mulreany phoned told me the details of the proposed trip. I decided to ask Mr. Klinck the idea was so wonderful! I did. He said I should ask Schmann's on the quiet. He has heard nothing further and said I should let dad and Koppff take care of matters. Asked Charlie while down in the vault and received a horribly cold answer. If there was a chance of any one having a Saturday off he'd ask for himself first! Others haven't had any vacation etc. Was thoroughly disgusted. After all the hours they make us work in this dump they act insulted if we want a Saturday morning off! Pouring out. Walked all the way to Lenox Road before getting a trolley so I was thoroughly drenched as well as being some damned disgusted" Feb 14. He notes outside events as these entries show: "Shortly after noon word came in that Wiley Post and Will Rogers had both been killed in an airplane crash in Alaska. Will Rogers will probably be remembered as a "typical" American who could poke fun at Statesmen and get away with it. His brief articles in the New York Times and his radio program and movies were always full of good clean humor and philosophy. ." Aug 10; "War Begins is the daily news headlines today. Now that the Ethiopian rainy season is over Italy is going ahead with her plans that may upset the entire world before she is finished. The threats of war have been in the air for several months and now it's on. I hope and pray we may never become involved in it ." Oct 3. What George probably never thinks about is that in a few short years he will be enlisted in the U.S. Army fighting in the largest war ever seen. This is a fine diary of a young man struggling to find his place in the world in the midst of a terrible depression. For social historian it is an excellent window into the world of a young New Yorker at this time.; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5" - 6" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; MID-20TH CENTURY; 1930s; GREAT DEPRESSION; NEW YORK; BROOKLYN; UNITED STATES; GEORGE APPLEGATE; KINGS COUNTY SAVINGS BANK; LIFE IN THE GREAT DEPRESSION; WILL ROGERS; ITALIAN INVASION OF ETHIOPIA; ANGLO-SAXON LODGE; ATTITUDE TO DEATH IN 20TH CENTURY AMERICA; FAMILY RELATIONS; YOUNG AMERICANS IN THE GREAT DEPRESSION; BANK EMPLOYEES; GEORGE J CRAIGEN; ELIZABETH CORLETT CRAIGEN; SANTA FE; VILLAGRA BOOKSHOP; GILBERT AND SULLIVAN SOCIETY OF NEW YORK; AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎

‎GEORGE ELKANA MORTON‎

‎1886 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A HALIFAX NOVA SCOTIA NOTABLE AND RENOWNED BOOKSELLER APOTHECARY AND AUTHOR‎

‎HALIFAX NOVA SCOTIA. Good. 1886. On offer is a sensational later 19th Century original manuscript diary handwritten by George Elkana Morton noted bookseller apothecary and wholesale druggist publisher and author of Halifax Nova Scotia. Curiously and enigmatically the diary has a handwritten ownership inscription of the Reverend John Forrest D.D. who was Dalhousie University president from 1885-1910. However credible research finds the book was in fact authored by George Morton as references to Morton's sister his birth date address activities and other clues lead us to believe that the book was certainly written by Morton. How the book came into Morton's hands are lost to history but Forrest was his personal friend and as Morton was a bookseller one can suppose a number of scenarios. Morton does a superb job of relating life in 1886 Halifax. He is central to so many businesses and an obviously very well educated erudite student of local national and international events commerce social and political life historians and researchers of 19th Century Nova Scotia will be hard pressed to find a better source of the times. He comprehensive fills the well sized 5" by 8" never missing a day and always filling the page in tight succinct handwriting. He includes weather accounts train and ship activity music hall and military events sugar refinery Halifax board of trade meetings deaths accidents and other world events made note of and commented on by the writer. Of a large intellect he has the humility to at one point muses over the need to keep a diary and why if no one in his life time was to read it why it was important. HISTORICAL NOTES: from the Dictionary of Canadian Biography: MORTON GEORGE ELKANA druggist book-seller publisher and author; b. 25 March 1811 in Upper Dyke N.S. eldest son of John Morton and Ann Cogswell a sister of Henry Hezekiah Cogswell; m. 26 May 1849 Martha Elizabeth Katzmann in Preston N.S. and they had two children; d. 12 March 1892 in Halifax. George Elkana Morton the son of "one of the most distinguished of King's County's sons" was a pupil of local Presbyterian clergyman William Forsyth. Going to Halifax at age 17 George began working in the city's first "regular" drugstore which had been opened on Granville Street in 1822 by Dr William Macara. He eventually succeeded Macara and in 1837 moved to Hollis Street where he advertised for sale "a general assortment of drugs genuine patent medicines Spices Perfumery Garden and Flower Seeds." Five years later Morton's Medical Warehouse a wholesale and retail drug business was established on Granville Street; subsequently reported to have been the largest such business in the province in the 1850s it may also have been the first to employ commercial travellers. At various times Morton was in partnership with his brother Lemuel James dissolved in 1854 with Alexander Forsyth and possibly with Leander Cogswell. By 1856 G. E. Morton and Company was also acting as "Authorized Agents for the Illustrated London Newspapers the Illustrated Times and other pictorial publications." About this time Morton seems to have got into financial difficulties that led to the mortgaging of his property. By 1865 his premises had been sold under foreclosure of the mortgage and subsequently he appears to have operated out of rented quarters. Over the years the emphasis of his business shifted to the sale of books and stationery and by 1873 the company is listed only as a "books and news agency"; it continued as such until about 1890. Morton had long been involved in the literary life of Halifax. In the 1850s he had assisted in the publication of the Provincial: or Halifax Monthly Magazine edited by his sister-in-law Mary Jane Katzmann and he is said to have contributed articles to the Guardian the British Colonist and other newspapers. The Banter a satirical magazine begun in 1874 was published at Morton's news agency. His Halifax guide book one of the earliest tourist guides to the city appeared in 1878 and he may also have written a guide to Cape Breton some years later. Two unpublished diaries for the years 1878 and 1880 contain his comments on political and social events. Morton was a life member of the St George's Society serving as treasurer from 1848 to 1851 and as assistant vice-president from 1852 to 1854. Treasurer as well of the Micmac Missionary Society from 1850 to 1861 he sat on its management committee in 1863 and 1864 see Silas Tertius Rand. On 2 Jan. 1878 Morton attended the organizational meeting of the Nova Scotia Historical Society at Province House in Halifax and he was on the committee that made arrangements for the successful inaugural meeting on 21 June Halifax Natal Day the anniversary of the arrival of Edward Cornwallis in 1749. Through the crucial early years he sat on its council and he continued to be a faithful member until his death. Having always exhibited an interest in telegraphy Morton had joined Samuel Cunard and others as a director of the Nova Scotia Electric Telegraph Company. Incorporated in 1851 this company was formed to extend the province's telegraph system to Sydney Liverpool and Yarmouth. Morton remained a director until 11 Jan. 1860 when at the annual meeting the stockholders and agents expressed their great dissatisfaction with the company's management and "the old hands every one got their walking ticket." Morton was involved in other business ventures. In 1854 he was one of William Henry Pope's financial backers in the purchase of Charles Worrell's estate in Prince Edward Island. Following the discovery of gold in Nova Scotia in the 1860s Morton held several mining claims in Halifax and Hants counties and he was one of the original shareholders in the Nova Scotia Sugar Refinery Limited incorporated in 1880. For a generation George Elkana Morton took an active part in the public life of the city of Halifax and the province of Nova Scotia. A strong supporter of confederation he was a personal friend of many Conservative leaders including James William Johnston Sir Charles Tupper and Simon Hugh Holmes. He died two weeks before his 81st birthday as a result of an accident in which his clothing caught fire. An obituary in the Halifax Herald recognized him as "a man of wide reading and cultivated literary taste" and stated that "possessing as he did a mind well stored with literary knowledge and a never failing supply of anecdote his bookstore was long a favourite resort for those of kindred tastes." ‎GEORGE EMLEN ROOSEVELT‎

‎1935 - 1947 ORIGINAL GROUP INCLUDING LOGS AND SCRAPBOOK OF THE NOTED RACING SCHOONER THE 'MISTRESS'‎

‎NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND TO BERGEN NORWAY et al 1935. On offer is a super archive of typed ship's logs and scrapbook regarding the noted schooner "The Mistress" dated 1935 - 1947. George E. Roosevelt President Teddy Roosevelt's nephew was Master and Navigator of the Mistress and while there are no ownership inscriptions or other identifiers it seems likely this scrapbook was compiled and written by Roosevelt. The Mistress was the former flagship of the New York Yacht Club built in Shelbourne Nova Scotia in 1930 for George Roosevelt. Designed by Sherman Hoyt she raced her way through the Depression and War years in Long Island Sound the bi-annual Newport to Bermuda Race and contests in Europe. The archive includes three original 1935 typed logs describing the tragic 1935 transatlantic Yacht Race from Newport - Bergen Norway. Each day of the race is mentioned in 10 pages of typed manuscript. Minor changes have been made inserted in pencil. Plus two original carbon copies of the same. This log mentions several tragic deaths aboard other yachts in this race. A 1931 original typed log of a trip from Newport R.I. on July 4 to July 23 1931 11 pages onboard The Mistress" with George E. Roosevelt Master. Plus one original carbon copy with minor changes inserted in pencil. Another rather interesting typed log or manuscript is a 1947 New York to Panama trip about a Navy vessel. This voyage was from March 31 to April. There is a great 12 x 10 x 6 inch photo of Newsman and officers on board the USS Wisconsin for the Fourth Naval Reserve Training cruise and is captioned. The log of the journey is attached. This includes daily notes and events with navy officers and newspaper reporters as well as the President of the Shell Oil Co. This log was typed on 12 pages on the reverse of each page is letter head from Harris Upham & Co- a famous brokerage firm dealing in securities. Here are some snippets: June 12 1935 Our cook deserves a few remarks. He is a Dane and admits an age of 51 but looks older. His performance during the two days of heavy weather was marvelous. Hot meals well cooked and promptly served greeted us each time we came below cold and wet. All this time cooking in galley without a breath of ventilation as we of course were battened down completely during the gale. He feels hurt if one does not eat a lot and will get anything asked for such as tea instead of coffee etc. Our skipper says this storm would be exceeded only by winter gales or tropical hurricanes. Our cook says that the beating he received was not deserved even by one who murdered his father and mother: and he says he never did that. June 21 1935 Long 27.20 The sun came out this afternoon and its warmth was most grateful. It soon went behind the clouds and our fingers on the wheel again became numb as they have been for day. Below decks we are warm and the food continues wonderful. our eggs are still good: the bread still fresh; rum ration served at times when tired and cold is far superior to whisky and brandy. Contrary to our course in 1931 we took ice with us this trip and the last of it melted away today and we had our last fresh meat today. Of our 320 gallons of water we have consumed only 100 so if conditions continue favorable water will be turned on in the toilet in three days. We so far have used only salt water for washing and bathing. One cup a piece a day for shaving has been allowance of fresh water. BIO NOTES: George Emlen Roosevelt 1887-1963 was a banker and philanthropist was a first cousin once-removed of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and one of the most prominent railroad financiers of his day involved in 14 railroad reorganizations. He also held directorships in several important companies including the Morgan-controlled Guaranty Trust Company the Chemical Bank and the Bank for Savings in New York. His son Julian Roosevelt was an Olympic yachtsman. Overall G. Good. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. Manuscript. unknown‎

‎SELMA ALABAMA 1889. On offer are four lovely pages of heartfelt thank you from George H. Clark a recent transplant to the Selma Alabama area to Richard Smith a lawyer and friend dated January 15 1889. In gorgeous handwriting and flowery language Mr. Clark thanks Mr. Smith for the generosity and heartyness of the assistance rendered me in my difficulties here and for his expressed sympathy for my ventures and belief in its success. There are already plenty of poor Engineers in the state Mr. Clark states and the success of a newcomer will depend on his living mark of a totally better character. In his new position in Selma George talks about the kindness of his new neighbors the business men of Selma have shown themselves exceedingly friendly and have given me valuable assistance. his new surroundings I have already gotten a Park to lay out with.Title to the property is not yet acquired but if negotiations succeed I shall go about it at once. and the politics of Selma I am deeply interested in in the Northern misconceptions of Southern sentiment and Southern political method as far at least as its true purpose and results are concerning. Were I a resident here I could be nothing but a solid Southern Democrat as things now are. Finally he speaks to his friend of recent engineering news from back up north. He speaks of the contract of the Buffalo and Williamsville R.R. is let to Pearson McIntyre and Company. So this is what our Cahaba Valley friends have been doing these past months. The letter ends with pleasantries to Mr. Smith and his family with most sincere thanks for your kindness in helping me at this time and for your hearty sympathy and confidence I am Yours Respectfully George H. Clark. The letter is 4 pages long unbound but numbered at the top. It is written on stationery that reads George H. Clark C.E. ‎GEORGE H. LANEY‎

‎1944 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN EXUBERANT EXCEPTIONAL KANSAS CITY HUSBAND AND FATHER OF TWO WITH THE GRIT TO SAY HE HAS THE MOST HELLISH TIME OF HIS LIFE WHO WOULDN'T HAVE MISSED A MOMENT GETTING THE WORST OF IT IN THE PACIFIC THEATER‎

‎KANSAS CITY MO - ASIATIC-PACIFIC THEATER. Good. 1944. On offer is a super original manuscript diary and utterly fascinating eyewitness account of the island invasions of the U.S. military in the Pacific Theatre in WWII. There are 2 volumes in this collection. The first book measures 8 inches by 5 inches and contains 152 pages. This volume is only 5% complete - the completed pages do not contain text only pasted in photographs. In addition there are 9 loose photographs inside. The book is in good condition. The second volume measures 7.5 inches by 4 inches. It is bound at the top and in the military is known generally as a Field Message Pad or FMP. It contains 152 pages. It is 90% complete and has numerous photographs in addition to extensive entries covering the period May 1944 to Dec 1945. The back cover has separated but otherwise it is in good condition. The handwriting is clear and legible. George H. Laney was a 33 year old living in Kansas City MO. He was married and had 2 young children when he was drafted in Nov 1943. Assigned to the U.S. Navy he underwent a series of training programs over the next 6 months. On May 12th he reported on board LST 613 bound for the Pacific Theatre of war. LST stood for Landing Ship Tank. Built to transport tanks wheeled and tracked vehicles artillery and construction equipment LST's were designed to be beached to off-load their cargo. As described in his record LST's could also serve as troop carriers casualty evacuation vessels and prisoner of war transport ships. They had a range of 24000 miles. Unusually for a naval vessel they used high octane gasoline instead of diesel as fuel. Direct hits in combat were generally catastrophic. While slow and often challenging to maneuver they were a vital part of any sea-borne invasion. LST 613 served in the thick of the invasion of the Philippine Islands earning 5 battle stars or commendations. Laney records LST 613's journey from Seneca IL where she was laid down and launched to New Orleans via the Mississippi River. "Commissioning Day at Algiers Algiers Naval Base New Orleans LA. Mother and Dad came down from Huston to see me had a very nice visit. Called Louise long distance Liberty was good only I didn't have enough money Mother gave me $5 to get something to eat."May 19 1944. Over the next several pages he describes their passage through the Panama Canal and across the Pacific Ocean. Eventually they docked at Manus Island in Papua New Guinea. "At Manus . I saw Bob Hope Show. It was excellent. Participating were Hope Jerry Colongna Jerry Colonna actor and Bob Hope's famous sidekick Francis Langford Lanny Ross and Patricia Thompson a dancer. The show was wonderful better than anything else they could send us out here ."Aug 23 - Sept 4 1944. "Getting ready for the invasion of the Philippines" Oct 6 1944. "Leyte Invasion. Today is my 34th birthday and what a day I had was almost a nervous wreck. Jap suicide planes came over about all day. Couple LST's got hit by mortar fire. Large navy guns opened up all day and night on the island. I was glad to get the hell out of there. In returning to N.GNew Guinea LST 695 was torpedoed between Leyte and Palou ." Oct 20 1944. "Cruiser Nashville hit by suicide bombers in the straits between Mindanao and Negros."Dec 13 1944. "Mindanao Invasion D-Day 4 down and 2 assists We were hove to with a lot of other LSTs off shore when 20 or more Jap suicide bombers came over and attacked us. We were in the middle of the whole works and our boys shot down four of the bastards. Two LSTs 734-472 were hit by these suicide plains and set off high octane gasoline. The ships were abandoned about five minutes after the hit. Another LST was hit while we were on the beach. It was the most hellish day I have ever spent in my life but I wouldn't have missed it for anything. ." Dec 15 1944. In addition to his detailed descriptions of ship operations and combat Laney included a number of photographs in his book. The pictures are for the most part glued into place but some have come free enough to read the notations on the reverse. They include pictures of himself his shipmates annotated family members and what appear to be pictures of his wife Louise and his children. There are a number of other pictures of downed and wrecked Japanese fighters and bombers. Other pictures show the landscape and local native people. One appears to be a Japanese prisoner of war. On Nov 1st 1945 he disembarked LST 613 and began his journey home. His journal ends with this: "I was discharged and became a civilian. So this is the end of my career in the navy. Boarded the train for home. Arrived in KC at midnight. Louise and the gang was there to meet me." Dec 7 1945. For a military or naval historian this is a fabulous record. It is an eyewitness account of the critical invasions of the Philippines recounted by a person who was there in the thick of it. It is a detailed well-written account. Historians and researchers can use this primary material for direct evidence and to cross-reference other sources. For a writer it is an inspirational story of a young man who left family and home to serve his country with not a word of complaint. The photographs especially of fellow crew mates destroyed warplanes and local inhabitants give an air of immediacy that brings his words to life. This is an excellent war record.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF UNITED STATES; KANSAS CITY; MISSOURI; 20TH CENTURY 1940S WW2 SECOND WORLD WAR PACIFIC WAR ASIATIC-PACIFIC THEATER PHILIPPINES; U.S. ARMY TANK LANDING SHIP NAVY NAVAL OPERATIONS LST 613; GEORGE H LANEY; BATTLE OF LEYTE GULF; INVASION OF MINDANAO; INVASION OF THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS; JAPANESE SUICIDE BOMBERS; USS NASHVILLE; BOB HOPE; JERRY COLONNA; FRANCIS LANGFORD WARTIME PHOTOS MILITARY HISTORY; AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎
