LEXINGTON VIRGINIA. Good. 1929. On offer is a very interesting original 1929 manuscript diary handwritten by George Howard Snyder Jr. who kept this diary while attending Washington and Lee University in Lexington Virginia. A steady diarist while at school who stops when he goes home for the summer starting back at the end of August and then with only a few gaps to December 16th. Few diaries will give the college experience in such detail. Here are some snippets: 1929 "January 7th Just another day in which to pass away time. There was plenty of work to do as I had a few tests to study for. Went down to the hotel and asked Mr. Thelen to read a German Parallel which he did. Had a great time reading it. Received a letter from Betty and mother." "January 21st Started in on a long week of exams by taking Hygiene. I think that I did fairly well. Had a very poor day. Carl resigned from the University. The rest is just a thing of the past. Was so upset that it was impossible for me to study. Had to study for an exam in history. So did worry about it. Went to bed very late." "January 28th Stayed around town and just waited for something to do. Finally Fred and I decided to go to Washington. We left here at 2:30 and arrived at D. C. at 8:15 just in time for a show. We saw "Sears" a Warner Time picture or play. Enjoyed it. Had something to east at Union Station. Saw a replica of the first passenger train in the U.S.A." "February 2nd A beautiful day but nothing to do outside of study. Had a bull session with Ben on marriage! Then we all got into a nice fight with Fred. It ended when he smashed some one in the eye. Retired good and late." "February 17th Got up early enough to go to church and sure did enjoy the sermon. Wrote a letter to dad and mother. Also received a letter from mother stating Dorothy's poor condition. Sure did upset me. Finally asked Kitty to come down. Took a walk at night. One beautiful night. Went to bed late." "March 2nd Things were very quiet. Just waiting to receive the score for the game. We lost our chance of a Southern Championship as Mississippi defeated us 50 to 28. Two of our men were forced to leave the game because of fouls. Received letter from mother. Saw a good movie at night "Wild Orchids". Worked at night." "March 5th Very sad day as I received a telegram from Betty saying that Dorothy passed away. Sent Mrs. Megorgee a telegram and then wrote Betty a letter. Could not study the rest of the day as I was thinking about her. Sure is sad. Had a hard time to write Betty's letter. Hoovers inauguration." "March 23rd Had a hard time staying awake in class. Studied and slept some in the afternoon. The "Pony Express Rider" from New Mexico came thru dressed in full cowboy uniform. Went to a fire at night. House burning to the ground. Studied and then went to bed early." "April 17th A great day for the politician. Starting off with a political rally in the gym. All the candidates speaking. After that it developed into a drunken brawl in the gym. It was the most that I have ever seen. Wrote to mother and Betty. Received a letter from Better. Went to bed late." "September 23rd Things were dull as usual for the beginning of the week. One of the students was killed in an accident so we held service in the afternoon. Then we formed a double line and marched in front of the casket to the station. We sang the Alma mater as the train pulled out. A very sad affair." "October 30th Classes went fine. No trouble what so ever. Received C in transportation quiz. Studied a little in the afternoon. Went to the movies and saw the Gold Diggers of Broadway. A great show. Had a good meeting out at the house. Went to bed rather late. Received a letter and some packages from mother." Online Obituary states: "G. Howard Snyder Jr. 82 retired president of a packaging firm and a former savings and loan executive died Thursday in Rydal Park convalescent center. He lived in Rydal. Mr. Snyder was for many years the president of George H. Snyder Inc. a manufacturer of paper boxes for the tobacco and health-care industries. The firm was first located in North Philadelphia and later in Warrington. The company was founded in the early 1900s by Mr. Snyder's father. Mr. Snyder became president upon his father's death in 1942 and operated the company until he retired and the business was sold in 1970. Mr. Snyder was also a savings and loan executive. He was elected assistant treasurer of the Glenside Building & Loan Association in 1937. In 1953 he was one of the founding directors of the Glenside Federal Savings & Loan and served as its president for 22 years. In 1975 Glenside Savings & Loan merged with Commonwealth Federal Savings & Loan. Mr. Snyder served on the board of directors until he retired in 1981. Mr. Snyder was a founding director of the Mary Bailey Foundation an organization that supported pioneering Philadelphia heart surgeon Charles P. Bailey who attended Mr. Snyder's church. The foundation was named for Bailey's adopted daughter who died on Christmas Day 1949 at the age of 7.Mr. Snyder graduated from Germantown Academy in 1927 and from Washington & Lee University in Lexington Va. in 1931.He was a former member of the Union League and a member trustee and Sunday school officer of Carmel Presbyterian Church in Glenside. Surviving are his wife Emily W.; sons George H. 3d Thomas A. and Robert D.; six grandchildren and four great-grandsons." 1898 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT SHIP'S LOG BOOK OF THE FAMED STEAM YACHT WINDWARD AS IT CROSSED FROM LONDON TO NEW YORK TO MEET IT'S FUTURE AND DESTINY WITH ROBERT EDWIN PEARY
ASEA ABOARD STEAM YACHT WINDWARD NORTH ATLANTIC. Good. 1898. On offer is a super original manuscript relic of Arctic exploration and humankind's unceasing attempts at discovery no matter what the adversity including the cold vast unexplored wastelands of the North that drove men like Robert Edwin Peary to gamble with the money of their backers and the lives of the men employed to make those dreams come alive. This ship's log details the commencement of Peary's attempt to discover the North Pole in 1898 by way of the steam yacht 'Windward' which was being delivered to Peary in New York from London to be his flagship in Peary's second Arctic Expedition and voyage of discovery and one which he and 'Windward' would claim the farthest point north ever reached. Dated 'At Sea London to New York' 15 March - 18 May 1898 the logbook details in typical 'quarterdeck' fashion meticulous records and narrative handwritten by the ship's first mate George J. Norton of Dorset who has signed each page. A list of the 20 or so crew members their rank and from whence they came is at the start of the 55 pages of daily log notes for example: the crew joining at 5 am at Fletcher's dry dock in Limehouse East London on Tuesday 15 March 1898 and being taken by tug on the Thames passed Greenhithe to Gravesend and from there rounding the bend passed Hastings and Beachy Head Norton records position course speed sea and weather conditions crew duties repairs and maintenance soundings etc. From 28 April to 3 May the ship and crew navigated vicious high seas gale winds and thunder storms. The final entry dated 18 May 1898 reads "10 AM Tug came alongside to take crew's effects. Left ship leaving a watchman in charge who was employed by Lieut Peary. All hands except Ramsay Nagle & DeWitt going to London by 'Majestic'." HISTORICAL NOTES: In December 1897 while Lieutenant Peary was in London the steam yacht 'Windward' which he had used in his Franz Joseph Land expedition was again tendered to him by Alfred G. Harmsworth editor of London Daily Mail and owner of the vessel. Harmsworth further offered to have the vessel re-engined and delivered to New York. Peary accepted the offer. In the spring of 1898 the Peary Arctic Club was organised for funding and in May 'Windward' arrived in New York. A machinists' strike in England had however prevented the installation of new engines. After two weeks in New York the ship set sail for Australia to participate in Peary's first north polar expedition. Captain Bartlett who made the voyage from New York to Sydney with 'Windward' would from there command Peary's old ship 'Hope.' Announced July 16 1898 in Scientific American Magazine "The auxiliary steam yacht 'Windward' departed from New York on 2 July 1898 for Sydney Cape Breton in command Captain John Bartlett who has made four trips to the Arctic regions. Mr. Peary and other members of his party will join the 'Windward' at Sydney. The 'Windward' carried one of the two survivors of the six Esquimaux which Mr. Peary brought home last year. The 'Windward' has 50 tons of provisions for the use of Mr. Peary and his men. From Sydney the yacht will go to Cape York Greenland where she will take aboard a party of 60 Esquimaux with their sledges and dogs. From there she will steam to Sherard Osborne Fiord where a base of supplies will be established. As the expedition moves northward it will at 50 mile intervals establish other bases of supplies for use in case the party is forced to retreat. The 'Windward will return in spring to Sydney for stores." ABOARD THE HMS ALEXANDRA EGYPT. Very Good. 1882. On offer is the original manuscript eyewitness account of the Bombardment of Alexandria Egypt between July 11th - 13th 1882 handwritten by participant Captain George James Tomlin Royal Navy 1837 - 1906. This is a superb primary source account by a Royal Navy Officer and a participant in the bombardment augmented by photographic material and as such rare and unique. Captain George J. Tomlin the second generation in a line of four men who all became Royal Navy Officers. He was on board HMS Alexandra during the British assault on Alexandria and provides a detailed first-hand account of the battle. He notes: 'the Alexandra was struck about 30 times to the hull. she had 1 man killed and 30 wounded'. The narrative describes the battle and both collectors and historians will be impressed by the details provided in the written manuscript. Tomlin lists the participating ships their guns losses method of attack etc. and also comments on political figures such as Admiral Seymour Prime Minister Gladstone and Colonel Urabi; 'during the bombardment 700 out of 1200 Egyptians were killed outright.' The Bombardment of Alexandria 1882 by the British Mediterranean Fleet took place on 11-13 July 1882. Admiral Sir Frederick Beauchamp Seymour was in command of a fleet of about 15 Royal Navy ironclad ships which sailed to Alexandria when a riot broke out and Europeans were killed. The Royal Navy arrived in the port city to protect the lives and property of British subjects. When the forces of Colonel Urabi began augmenting their port fortifications the Admiral issued an ultimatum to stop and when the Egyptians didn't stop fortifying their positions the fleet attacked. The one-day bombardment of the city was successful in defeating all of the Egyptian forts with no loss of British ships but the next day a fire broke out and the areas of Alexandria in which Europeans made their homes were predominant burned down. This important historic archive is befittingly contained in a stunning contemporary specifically made premium folio sized folder made of marbleized papers leather spine and gilt title treatment to protect the sixteen 16 leaves of the twenty 20 page narrative together with one large photograph of Dutch House in Port Said with HMS Invincible and HMS Alexandra at anchor one photograph of the Officers and Ladies of HMS Alexandra as well as one photograph of a formation of British Army soldiers as well as four 4 further photographs of various Europeans in Egypt. The manuscript and portrait are in very good condition. The ledger details George's business from 1868 to 1873 with more than 900 pages of recorded transactions of detailed accounts of shoes boots and other footwear sold or repaired by George Lehner Jr. a master cobbler and his staff of shoemakers. Research of the 1860 U. S. Census shows George's father George Sr. age 56 as a "Master Shoemaker" born in Hesse Darmstadt Germany; George age 19 as a Shoemaker's Apprentice born in Pennsylvania. Living with his mother Elizabeth age 50 and sister Margaret age 14. Two shoemakers and a servant living with the family: Henry Keagy Sebastian Stout and Elizabeth Beam. The 1870 U. S. Census lists George now age 28 as a "Boot and Shoe Merchant" born in Pennsylvania; he was married to Margaret Lehner age 26; they had 3 children: May age 4 Charles age 3 Margaret age 1 and George age 3 months. Two shoemakers and a servant live with them: Lewis Barnaker Lewis Geotman and Elizabeth Miller. CANANDAIGUA NEW YORK NY. Poor. 1856. On offer is a very unique fascinating and enigmatic pre-Civil War handwritten manuscript diary by George M. Burnett. At first glance Mr. Burnett appears to be an itinerant farm laborer but a closer reading reveals that Mr. Burnett is an important man in the community as a preacher and a bookseller. Based near Canandaigua New York he travels frequently to Shortsville Naples Manchester etc. and discusses the sale of his books to other booksellers. Not easily read in spots and the book is fragile but oddly someone has hand stitched some pages together. One such area has split open but one cannot find anything that would lead one to understand the reason for stitching the pages together. Perhaps a closer reading will reveal the reason. George mentions many dozens of people he works for and with and to whom he sells. Very interesting local events and occurrences from 'had our fish stole Vansisa drunk'; met the children of George Washington; heard that Bufus wife was dangerous sick plus many many dozens more. Preachers and sermons are also mentioned for the most part. The diary ends on November 19th as the rest of the pages are absent. Inscribed on the fep "George M. Burnett from His Sister." Also we believe the name Ida M. Burnett who is perhaps said sister or his wife. Local historians and collectors will find this diary a treasure trove of local events and genealogy given the many hundreds of names fully mentioned. ARDROSSAN SCOTLAND ASEA VIA SS TEES TO NEW ZEALAND. Good. 1923. On offer is an interesting relic of sea travel being an original 1923 manuscript 'Chief Officer's Log Book' for the Sail and Steam Packet Ship "S.S. Tees" carrying freight and passengers most likely starting from Ardrossen Scotland to New Zealand and various ports in Australia via the Suez Canal from January 4th through April 19th. The Ship's Master is A.I. Dowell and the Chief Officer is George McNee. Both men have signed their names at the bottom of each page of entries. This is a picture perfect example of century-old naval tradition as this wonderful 10�" x 12�" logbook is faithfully filled out. The log sold specifically for the purpose of keeping ship's daily records while at sea and as such has printed pages to be filled in by hand. The book is comprised of 100 pages of which 97 have been used. Categories pre-printed on the forms include: courses deviations distances winds latitude and longitude average speeds times and names of persons responsible for each watch titled "On The Look Out" and "Lanterns Hung Out" and other details of the related records all filled in by the Chief Officer of the S.S. Tees. The "Remarks" section of each day reveals varying information: weather conditions sails set compass error ascertained by azimuth plus the various occupations of the crew are also mentioned: painting steering gear oiled and examined pump wells sounded decks washed down etc. Comments on the Ship's movements and handling are also noted such as: "Vessel labouring"; "Vessel rolling heavily". Ports-of-Call harbors entered by the S.S Tees during this voyage include Ardrossan and Newcastle Australia and Greymouth Picton Wellington and Lyttleton New Zealand. Various cargos including coal and timber are loaded and discharged. The manuscript entries are written mostly in dark bold ink and are very readable the covers are somewhat worn and stained but sound intact and attractive. The internal pages are in very good condition - tight and complete with some soiling and staining. 1914 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY BY THE COMMANDER OF THE FAMED AND NOTORIOUS HMS AGINCOURT FROM DETERMINED MOBILIZATION TO THE DANGEROUS NORTH SEA
HMS AGINCOURT THE NORTH SEA. Very Good. 1914. On offer is a superb relic of World War I and British naval history being a manuscript diary kept by the Commander of the Royal Navy's famed dreadnought the 'HMS Agincourt' at the beginning of WWI during her assignment as part of the British Grand Fleet in the North Sea engaging the German Kaiserliche Marine's High Seas Fleet. This diary begins July 29th with a call to mobilize and then there is the immediate outbreak of the war in August 1914 through to December 1914 very neatly written in ink with one photograph some sketches cruising orders and newspaper cuttings. This important historical first hand account was handwritten by George Napier Tomlin RN Rear Admiral 1875 - 1947 gives first hand content and detailed insight into the workings of the British Grand Fleet and documents the confusion that existed in the immediate days after the war broke out on August 5th 1914. Tomlin's original assignment as he notes on the 30th is aboard the HMS Majestic. Tomlin writes regarding the appointment as one: 'which I look upon as an insult. If there is to be a fight I want to be in a fighting ship & not in one recovered from a scrap heap'. Excitingly his assignment changes and he is one of the first aboard a newly 'commandeered' Turkish ship renamed Agincourt. Collectors and historians of the First World War will also delight knowing that diaries unlike letters were not censored. The British had concentrated their Fleet at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands and 'HMS Agincourt' was sailing back and forth to the Bight of Heligoland to engage the Kaiser's Fleet. Much can be learned about life aboard a British warship as the journal is replete with details about navigational positions fleet details officers' names and positions courts martial administered etc. Much anxiety existed about German submarines and mines and Tomlin's drawings elaborate on mines in the North Sea as well as the British Fortification with wire nets of the Harbour of Buncrana Ireland. Frequent reference is made to the C in C Commander in Charge Jellicoe who had his headquarters on the 'HMS Iron Duke'. The diary also shows the concerns about Zeppelins and mentions their appearance. Visits aboard the 'HMS Agincourt' by 1st Lord Winston Churchill were recorded on September 17 while the ship was anchored at Loch Ewe in Scotland. Finally Tomlin mentions the sinking of various British and German ships among them the German U-18 and the German Battle Cruiser 'SMS Scharnhorst' by British Ships off the Falkland Islands where the famous German Admiral Graf Spee met his fate. Political Background: In 1904 in response to the build-up of the German Kaiserliche Marine's High Seas Fleet it was decided that a northern base was needed to control the entrances to the North Sea. Originally Rosyth was considered for the base and then Invergordon at Cromarty Firth but construction in both places was delayed leaving them largely unfortified by the time of the First World War. Scapa Flow was used many times for exercises in the years leading up to the war. When the time came for the fleet to move to a northern station Scapa Flow was chosen for the main base of the British Grand Fleet even though it was also unfortified. John Rushworth Jellicoe admiral of the Grand Fleet was constantly nervous about potential submarine or destroyer attacks on Scapa Flow and the base was reinforced with minefields artillery and concrete barriers starting in 1914. These fears were borne out when German U-boats twice attacked British ships in Scapa Flow though the attacks themselves did no damage.
