1944 - 1945 ORIGINAL DIARY AND PHOTO ALBUM OF A 19 YEAR OLD BRITISH MAN TRAINING TO BE A RADIO OPERATOR IN CANADA
MONCTON NEW BRUNSWICK CANADA. Good. 1944. On offer is a super original manuscript diary handwritten by James C. Dow trainee of the Royal Air Force written in England and then at 31 P.D. Training Camp Moncton New Brunswick Canada. Along with the diary is a photograph album titled 'The Canadian Adventure. Sept. 1944 to March 1945.' Historians and researchers of the era and the experience of British training in Canada will find the two items complimenting one another in casting interesting light on the day-to-day training routine of a middle-class 19 year old man training as an RAF radio operator during the Second World War. At the start of the diary Dow is in training in Lincolnshire engaged in such activities as learning Morse Code and doing transmitter tuning practice. By August he is training in Lancashire and on 25 August he is drafted to Canada. He usually begins his businesslike entries with a short report of the progress of the war and end with a mention of the weather. In between are usually several sentences of personal information. A typical entry 12 April 1944 reads: 'The Russians have made considerable progress towards the center of the Crimea. Had a pretty easy morning; ostensibly cleaning up defense trenches in the Larch Wood on the far side of the North Drome under Sgt. Fish of the Regiment. Quite restful! Denis passed his morse this morning: so did Mac. Denis & I spent most of the afternoon in the Information Room officially "games". We Taffy Standish Dave Hands & Sid Steed are going on day pass to Lincoln tomorrow. It was quite mild - sunny with some cloud'. On 26 he reaches the Trois Rivieres camp seventy miles from Quebec. The following day he complains: 'We are here for nothing more definite than fatigues to pass time until we start training. Dennis & I are in a party which has to clear up variou rubbish dumps around the camp'. On 24 October he starts his course in Moncton: 'It is going to be very hard work for the 22 weeks it lasts if I stick it out!. We work 8 hours a day so there are usually extra assignments at night.' By the last entry in the diary Dow is 'Flying again this morning - a pleasant trip. As W/Op once again. I got an all-right'. The diary also contains some addresses and a list of 25 books Dow has read. Album: landscape 8vo 24 pp containing 49 captioned black and white photographs ranging in size from 8.5 x 12 cm to 6 x 9 cm together with a postcard of Notre Dame Church Montreal. Internally sound in a worn binding with the photographs in excellent condition. The first eight pictures are of the training camp at Moncton mostly with named individuals. The next eight are of Montreal and these are followed by nineteen pictures under the heading 'Quebec St. Louis de Courville. Week Ends with the Woods' the first two being captioned 'with Bill Scollay & Taffy Standish near the Wood's sic home' and 'Desmond Wood in front with Jimmy from next door'. There follow two pictures headed 'After we left' and eight of an aircraft under the heading 'No 8 Air Observer School Ancienne Lorette Quebec'. The first shows an 'Anson about to take off' and there are also an 'Interior scene during flight' an 'Astrocompass in silhouette' and five views out from over the wing including the 'Shawnigan Falls & the Shawnigan River a frew miles north of Trois Rivieres'. The last four images are of a 'New York Interlude - Christmas 1944'. Diary: 12mo with 91 full pages of neatly-written entries. Text clear and complete. Fair: internally sound and clean on lightly-aged paper in worn original boards. Dow's ownership inscription inside the front board reads 'James C. Dow. R.A.F. 1944.' ASEA ABOARD THE ELLEN STUART. Good. 1862. On offer is a super very intriguing original 1862 - 1863 journal handwritten on board the noted clipper ship 'Ellen Stuart' part of the fleet owned and operated by storied merchant Peter Stuart. The ship was a formidable presence on the oceans between England Africa and Southeast Asia during the 1850s. The log written by a mariner likely a first or second officer perhaps James Dalton precisely describing the set of sails and changes to the set weather position working or setting 'the people' to task or 'the people employed holystoning the deck flying fish coming aboard to 'the monkey jumping for pumpkin' making for a technical mariner's dream of a log with a real HM Navy feel in a real life merchant clipper that would please any Forester or Patrick O'Brien fan. While the year is not clearly identified we believe this Liverpool to Calcutta India voyage is dated from Tuesday August 5th 1862 to Saturday May 17th 1863 and while the author is unidentified we believe that an 18 year old fragile letter tucked into the log holds the key. The letter is dated Stanford Terrace Academy December 11th 1845 Ashton Ashton-under-Lyne near Manchester and is a very first 'Dear Parents' letter on the boy's started at the Academy. The letter is signed 'James Dalton'. We believe the letter was kept by the man who was the boy that wrote that letter for sentimental reasons. Or could it be the father of James Dalton who held the letter whilst he travelled the globe again for sentimental reasons We can only speculate. The captain throws a champagne dinner for one of the officers birthday and then a tale of his personal goods being stolen a near unusual crime aboard ship the searching of another seaman's chest and finding more of the writer's possessions an admission of guilt but even more unusual no record of the fate or punishment of the sailor the cat hove overboard by a sailor who saw its mouth foaming a sailor found dead in his Guernsey frock and much much more in this 39 page 10 x 11.5 inch well written account of a super voyage to the Asian subcontinent. 1844 ORIGINAL CHATTY MANUSCRIPT LETTER HAND WRITTEN BY AN ENGAGING BROWN UNIVERSITY SOPHMORE
PROVIDENCE RHODE ISLAND. Fair. 1844. On offer is an excellent piece of original correspondence from early 19th century America. This 3-page letter measures 9.5 inches by 7.5 inches and is in excellent condition. The handwriting is very neat and quite legible. The letter was written by James Fletcher Blackinton of Providence RI in 1844 while he was a Sophmore at Brown University. Written to an unknown male recipient the letter is an effort to explain certain actions that he took while on a trip to another town. Reading into the lines it would appear that he either rented or borrowed a horse for the journey. He explains his journey and the options he had as to certain routes. It appears that he did not follow the route that he initially indicated and that he made an unplanned stop at a cemetery to visit a friend's grave. He explains his decisions and goes on to add that he feels he has done nothing wrong. He also chides the man's sister for making comments about him behind his back. The letter is well-written: Having been informed that some circumstances connected with my recent journey to S. Reading have caused you and others much anxiety I have thought it my duty to address you in explanation of my course. The horse with which I went was recommended to me as fully capable of performing the journey in the allotted time. p 1 He goes on to describe his route including stops detailing 8.5 hours of travel interspersed with 3.5 hours of rest breaks: The horse was well-kept from the time I started til I returned. I had never been to S. Reading before and knew nothing of the way beyond Boston; but from what I learned before I started and from inquires on the road I concluded the distance must be nearly the same through Cambridge or Charleston; being acquainted with the later town I went that way. . p 1 He states that even though the bill has been settled and that he believes he did not exceed the distance agreed upon he is willing to revisit it: But what impropriety there could be in visiting a place where everything is calculated to bring to our mind the remembrance of departed friends and remind us of our own mortality I am at a loss to conceive. But if others think differently and will convince me that I have acted amiss I will acknowledge my error . p 2 His criticism of the man's sister for her remarks behind his back is masterful: If a certain sister of yours thinks our conduct in going to Mt Auburn justify her in making the kind remarks and delicate comparison she has been pleased to draw - I advise her to visit those calm and peaceful shades and as she gazes on the monuments of the dead let her remember that victims have been brought to the grave by unkind words as well as other causes. p 3 A historian would see value in this letter from different perspectives. First of all it delineates travelled routes through this area of Massachusetts. It provides an indication of how certain transactions were carried out - in this case apparently horse rental that included route and distance to be travelled. ITALY NAPLES TUNIS NORTH AFRICA TUNISIA. Good. 1909. On offer is a fascinating original manuscript diary handwritten by James Grey Turner of London England. James besides writing an extraordinary 94 page travel diary with ephemera mostly postcards 90 of his trip through the Middle East and Mediterranean including Naples then Tunis was married to Evelyn and together they birthed a very famous son; George Grey Turner bio info to follow. Turner explains the trip on the first page: "The 30th Sept. 1909 was the date fixed upon which I was to cease work with the firm Lloyd's Bank Limited the successors of Lambton and Company "The Bank in Newcastle upon Tyne and elsewhere." My wife and I had often built "Castles in the Air" when looking forward in past years to such a time actually arriving. We had after grave thought and considerations decided to give up housekeeping and in future for a time at least to "live in our boxes." We did so with greater confidence seeing that Jim was the only one left to us at home and he being to all appearances in capital health and well able to look after himself in "digs" of the most comfortable kind that we thought we had found for him. So on the 8th October 1909 we left No. 1 Queen's Road in the company of Lily bound for London which was to be the first stage of our trip to Naples where we quite hoped to stay the winter that both my wife and I might benefit by change of climate and the sunny shores of Italy." Things do not work out the way they wanted and much of the diary is spent in Tunis. One of the highlights is their meeting with the famous painter Louis Gage Mason and his wife and tucked in are two photo postcards of each. It seems that the diary has been handed down by James Grey Turner to his son George Grey Turner and then it was handed down to his son Elston as evidenced by the handwritten inscription on the first page that says "To Elston from Grammie Xmas 1930." BIO NOTES: George Grey Turner was born in 1877 and was an English Surgeon. He received a Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1903 and served with the Royal Army Medical Corps in the First World War. As a young surgeon he travelled around the world being received by the Pope Mussolini the King of Italy and King Alfonso of Spain. Five years before his death Grey Turner was made President of the International Society of Surgeons. After the war Grey Turner was briefly famous for performing one of the earliest operations to attempt the removal of a bullet from a soldier's heart. The bullet was never removed but Grey Turner's surgery saved the patient's life. During the following decades Grey Turner worked with early cancer research and anticipated the development of Chemotherapy. A type of bruising Grey-Turner's sign was named after the surgeon. His name plate is pasted to the inside front cover of the journal.
