JAMES L. COUSAR
1869 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG MAN STRUGGLING TO SUCCEED IN POST CIVIL WAR RECONSTRUCTION MISSISSIPPI
ABBEVILLE MISSISSIPPI. Fair. 1869. On offer is an original significant post-Civil War manuscript relic handwritten in 1869 through 1878 by James L. Cousar of Abbeville Mississippi. Cousar was growing cotton and running a small farming operation on his own. Even a casual read of his diary entries give a sense to the struggles to keep his operation afloat. Cousar leads a rough life at times and seems quite depressed. He was likely a veteran of the War and we note a poem related to the war tucked in the journal. The diary is very well filled with approx 100 double folio sized sheets in a journal measuring 12 x 6 inches. Cousar fill's the entire sheet and cover boards. The diary is at times in three distinct parts one an account of his cotton business a record of weather and regular diary entries. Places mentioned include Shiloh Summersville Liberty and Cypress Creek. Cousar's writings range from one liners to short paragraphs but it is the content that makes this diary significant; almost all entries mention cotton; how much and fast he can get it bailed; mentions going to preaching deaths elections hunting game local life one entry mentions a possible war due to elections and how lucky the community is that they did not have an artillery duel in the streets. This references Republicans that were on the ballot during reconstruction; several entries mention paying 'Negroes' most likely former slaves to help on his farm picking cotton. Readers should prepare for 'period talk' being derogatory remarks in the text. He mentions issues with planting plowing and maintaining cotton. In 1878 he has some sort if major crisis and some entries are very personal. Here are some snippets: Nov 12 1876 At Shiloh warm cloudy took a bale of cotton to Alice to Anderson's Picked 125 & weighted 33.3 lbs cotton for Dr Call. 1872 Left Sammersville on the seven this morning and landed at Moscow at 8 am left mine junction 10 left at 2 pm arrived at Abbivile at four walked out and caught up with Mr. Alexander and drove his wagon to Mr. H. Took supper and went to John W and stayed all night. H. got home this morning warm and clear pulled a little cotton I am not well went to Pa's this evening. Went to Shailoh to preaching Mr . Pressley will be gone for some time. I am still sick hot looks dry.Cooler and clear raining south hoeing cotton January 1st 1872 I stayed with Mr. Bell last night he died this morning just after I left.Went to Liberty 1872 Raining at a distance I was at Pa's last night from there to Shailoh church. Mr. C. Varnarely was elected without war or an artillery fight. Very hot raining at a distance to today its still too wet looks like it will never get dry enough until it burns up. Hot enough to kill a thick sculled nigger. Raining off I was busy grieveing- my cotton the finishing took a while it is just getting dry enough to plow good. Alex with me last night we went to see the picture man Pierce he does very good work I took dinner with Alex today. It is getting hot again would like to see a shower of rain again I don't think cotton is very good. Sept 20 1872 Sanders store to get money to pay my cotton pickers got ten dollars it won't last long. I will haul out 800 ponds tonight. Oh how I wish I could pick. Pretty warm again the infernal negroes are about to pick all my cotton out and money too. Will be rather light we will be able to carry our money in out pocket next year without others knowing. Clear and cool I will have out about 2300 pounds tonight. I have not picked any yet but think I will be able to pick next week. Sept22 1872 Warmer and clear thundering north this evening Anderson's hauling out cotton for me this evening hot and clear raining west I picked about 25 lbs of cotton this morning. Sept23 1872 Clear and hot raining showers at a distance I was at Mr. Craig's last night went from there to Shiloh. Sept 24 1872 Clear raining west pretty hot I picked 65 pounds of cotton today. March 7 1873 Went to hear Mr CN preach at liberty saw several ugly girls and a few long nosed men. Looks like rain but still very hot and scattering of clouds flying above plowed today broke out cotton mills till diner than plowed my corn patches wind very high. March 7 1874 Went to liberty to hear Mr. Davis Went to Shiloh saw Capt.- Spence's wife. Jan 18th 1874 Hot with light dashes of rain I have been trying to collect money on land but did not get much took dinner at Woodwards. At home this morning went over the river on a hunt this evening walked a long ways for two squirrels cloudy light dashes of rain warm hot and hazy not doing a thing went to Coffey's this evening I and Calvin Chaning took snuffer with Alex Mc. than Calbrio came home with me. Jan 5 1878 I feel bad today and have felt it for several day. The snow has been on the ground for three days. I have the notion to leave some days but I hardly know what to do for I have seen so much trouble trying to get my business straight that I am becoming tired out living on this part of the world. Oh if I had a good home where I thought I would To stay I would be content to remain there for life. But I am tired living where people do not want me I have lost faith in almost everything and everyone that I need in this world. In addition to the diary there is an intriguing small sheet with family genealogy written in pencil a partial newspaper from Kentucky and a few receipts. The condition of the journal is rough it's hard to believe it survived this long. The binding is holding on but is very fragile. The paper is brittle and tears easily sheets show tears stains several are lose one was even taped together. Several sheets were removed at some point in the past. Extreme care is needed when turning the pages of the diary. Needless to say there are 100 double sided sheets every one of which is filled with content.; Manuscript; 4to - over 9" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; JAMES L. James Likely
1854 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND STUDY OF ASTRONOMY OF JAMES LIKELY
New Hampshire. Good. 1854. Cloth. This is an amazing diary that has so many wonderful qualities. Dated 1854 the original owner's name is James Likely. There is also the name Mary Likely written on the back inside cover. This is not really a handwritten diary of our gentleman's daily routine but actually a journal full of his thoughts on the universe religion our bodies animal life and other miscellaneous subjects. There are almost 100 pages of script and a few wonderful drawings too. The first part of the diary is all about the celestial universe; Jupiter Saturn the Sun the different stars and our Earth. He's drawn a picture of Saturn and also one of the earth and the orbit of the sun. It's so interesting to see someone's view about the universe over 150 years ago. Research suggests Mr. Likely is from New Hampshire from references made about "Tollage for crossing Windsor Bridge during the year ending May 1859". Here are snippets: "This book is intended to be the repository of Biblical subjects with their proofs and conclusions and astronomical calculations and experiments that being written in the front of this diary. The discovery of Herschell was in the year 1811. The pressure of air upon earth is 12048468800000000000 pounds or 5000 billions of tons. The sun is a million of times larger than earth and sends forth light at the rate of 2000000 miles a minute. The earth flies round its aces axis at the rate of 1000 an hour. Flies through space at the rate of 60000 miles an hour.Captain Flinders in one of his voyages saw in a stream which passed before him for an hour and half all covered with ____ the stream was from 50 to 80 yards deep and 300 yards or more bread broad taking his reckoning for it. It would amount to 151 millions and a half and another travels in a different direction seen much more on that. The star Lyra for example is supposed by Sir W. Herschel to be 32275000 miles in diameter or 38 times the diameter of the sun and.The earth is a globe whose diameter is nearly 8000 miles and it's circumference about 25000 and consequently it's surface contains nearly two hundred millions of square miles and.The light of the sun is equal to 6500 candles at a foot distance while the moon would be as one candle at 1 feet Venus at 421 feet and Jupiter at 1320 feet that this immense luminary appears so small to our eyes in owing to it's vast distance." There is so much more not just about the universe but also about the other topics. His handwriting is very beautiful and easy to read. The diary measures about 4" x 6 " and the cover especially the outside spine is a bit rough and very worn. as far as condition but the inside pages look great.; Manuscript; 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall; Science Astronomy Celestial Space HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY AMERICANA . hardcover

JAMES M. DEMPSEY
1980 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL AND DIARY OF THE ARREST AND IMPRISONMENT OF A 32 YEAR OLD AMERICAN MAN IN TANGIER MOROCCO'S NOTORIOUS MALABATA PRISON FOR 70 GRAMS OF HASHISH
TANGIER MOROCCO. Good. 1980. On offer is a super fascinating original manuscript relic of one man's arrest and incarceration in the notorious Malabata Prison in Tangier Morocco. Handwritten by American James M. Dempsey in a self reference we learn he is 32 years old he describes his initial arrest for 70 grams of hashish by Moroccan authorities and then the intimate details of his experience in the prison. The reader will be surprised to find James an erudite diarist with a fair bit of personality and spunk and no self pity for the extreme situation he finds himself in and the story of his survival of the experience. James' experience in many ways has a positive side and he has many good relationships within the prison walls. However he does come into contact with another prisoner Kelly who evolves into a hated antagonist who has James dreaming of Kelly's murder at one point. Truly a unique narrative. Beginning May 27 1980 he writes about 50 well filled pages of narrative and drawings of the prison grounds building etc. There are also a few pages for addresses of contacts in the book. In 1984 Dempsey returned to Morocco to have another look around; that takes up another 4 pages and then a final diary note dated 1987. There are several other pages at the end with some of Dempsey's thoughts. Overall this is a fascinating look into the psyche and soul of an interesting eclectic adventurer. Overall the 6 x 4 inch book is G.; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5" - 6" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF JAMES M. JAMES M. SAPP
1933 FASCINATING ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL AND BIBB COUNTY SURVEY ON AUTOMOBILE OWNERSHIP OFFERING AN INTERESTING GLIMPSE OF ECONOMIC LIFE AT THE TIME OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION
BIBB COUNTY GEORGIA 1933. On offer is an interesting automobile property survey completed for tax purposes in the interwar years in the American south. The survey was kept in a 3-ring binder measuring 8.75 inches by 11 inches. There are 27 pages and they are 100% complete. The cover and ring clasp are in good condition. All of the pages are in good condition although several have pull loose from the rings. The handwriting is legible and a number of the entries are typed. This binder is a 1933 survey of motor vehicles owned in Bibb Co Georgia. Bibb County includes the city of Macon GA. The survey was conducted by James M Sapp who apparently worked for the Bibb County Tax Assessor's office. Sapp was born in 1900 and passed away in 1976. The data is entered on pre-printed card stock. It includes the owner's name address telephone number and make model and year of automobile. In some cases he notes if the person is a negro or their occupation such as teacher or sheriff. The purpose of the survey may have been to establish a tax rate on personal owned property for the County. The value of survey though is that it provides a detailed look at ownership rates of a major family asset. An economist or historian can use this information along with other county population data to develop a more complete picture of the economic circumstances of this community at a time when U.S. unemployment rates were peaking at 25%. Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Manuscript. unknown

JAMES MAURICE SHIPTON MIDSHIPMAN
1803 - 1805 ORIGINAL NELSON ERA MANUSCRIPT CYPHER AND EXERCISE BOOK BELONGING TO A ROYAL NAVY MIDSHIPMAN ABOARD A STORIED SHIP WHILE THE ENGLISH BLOCKADE BREST AND PLAY CAT AND MOUSE WITH THE FRENCH FLEET
Good. 1803. On offer is a superb original 1803 - 1805 manuscript cypher and navigation book handwritten by a young midshipman James Maurice Shipton aboard the noted HMS Thunderer a ship forever in the history books as the ship that spotted the emerging Spanish fleet and thusly began the Battle of Trafalgar and the demise of Britain's enemies and sadly the hero of the day Lord Horatio Nelson. Notably Thunderer also took part in the Glorious 1st of June Battle against the French in 1794. James Maurice Shipton who would one day captain his own ship and reap accolades created this book while theThunderer worked blockade duty along the French coast. Mere months later the ship would engage in the Battle of Trafalgar and the decisive engagement by the British would end the rule of the French despot and dictator Napoleon Bonaparte. Included are a number of letters from archivists and historians providing background info on Shipton. During the Revolutionary War it was known as Block House Point and was occupied by British forces and was site of several skirmishes between them and the Americans. Brigadier General Anthony Wayne led American troops from New Bridge on a raid against the blockhouse on July 20 1780 after which it was abandoned and when British troops decamped to the fort at Bergen Neck. Like Burdett's Landing to the north it was a crucial crossing point. Ferry service continued for several decades until steam ferries notably from Hoboken replaced the earlier row-and-sail service. JAMES MCFADDEN GRIMES
1868 ARCHIVE OF TWO 2 NOTEBOOKS AND JOURNALS OF MIDSHIPMAN AND NAVIGATOR OF THE STEAMER DACOTAH INCLUDING A LOG BOOK OF A TRIP TO SOUTH AMERICA AND A BOOK OF IMPRESSIVELY DETAILED NOTES AND IMMACULATELY DRAWN ENGINE DIAGRAMS
PANAMA BAY ARICA PERU VALPARAISO CHILE. Good. 1868. On offer are two amazing books kept by the Midshipman James McFadden Grimes aboard the U.S.S. steamer ship Dacotah. The first is a journal on a cruise from Panama Bay down the Coast of South America to Peru and then Chile and the other is an extraordinary notebook of detailed drawings comprehensive diagrams mathematical figures and many other notes dealing with his time aboard the ship and the knowledge that he possessed to be a part of the crew. The first book the journal begins at anchor in Panama Bay with the ship under orders to sail to Arica Peru. Grimes is a Midshipman and was a Naval Academy graduate. He would be promote promoted to ensign in 1868 but until then his rank was midshipman. During the 1868 cruise of the Dakotah Grimes is in charge of the navigation of the vessel and served directly under the ships captain Commander W. F. Spicer. Each page of the journal contains the daily logs of the ships location course changes and headings and notes on atmospheric conditions. In addition Grimes makes notes on daily activities and orders sightings of other naval vessels and commercial ships and reports on crew discipline and punishments. The course and destination ship wind direction Force Barometric pressure and outside temperature are measured hourly and put down in the book. The chart begins at 1 for 1AM and continues to 12 then begins again at 1 for 1PM and then ends again at 12. On occasional pages the observed latitude and longitude course distance traveled that day and Lat D.R. and Long D.R. meaning the Dead Reckoning latitude and longitude are logged as well. A typical log reads like this: At Sea making passage to Arica Peru. Tuesday May 26th 1868. The day opened cloudy rained now and then till 10 A.M. Cloudy and pleasant during remainder of the day. At 5.30 A.M. lighted fires in port boiler and got ship ready for sea. Ships draught 12.9in. Aft. 12ft-5in. At 11.20 made signal to Steamer Saranac Capt. Fraily for permission to get under way which was granted. At 11.25 hove up port anchor. At 12.15 started ahead and stood down bay of Panama in charge of navigation. At 2 P.M. took departure Island of Bona. At 6 P.M. went to quarters. Secured anchor and under-chains. Made sail as wind allowed. Wind light. Sea smooth. Periodically Commander Spicer inspected the journal and signed the book Examined. Wm. Spicer Comdr. On June 24 the Dacotah arrived in the harbor of Valparaiso Chile. The ship remained there throughout the period covered by this journal until October 31 1868. At that time Grimes formally signed and submitted the journal to Commander Spice for examination. There is a chance that the keeping of the journal was a requirement for his promotion to ensign that year. In Valparaiso the officers of the Dacotah received visitors from the British and Chilean natives and the American Consul. The journal reveals the many shipboard activities and duties expected of a young officer. Grimes describes inspections routine ship maintenance the distilling or condensing of fresh water target and musket practice there is also talk of exercising the crew at the great guns dumping rotten food overboard and practice repelling pirates. Crimes also records details of crew members punishments and court martials. Infractions include desertion fighting disobedience neglect of duty and skulkin ignoring ones duties. Punishments include suspension demotion and confinement in double or single irons: At sea Jun 21 1868. At 10 AM mustered the crew and read the articles of war for also the preceding findings and sentences of a summary court-martial convened on board the ship for the trial of John Hickey C.H. coal heaver accused of desertion and John McNeilly C H of disobedience of orders. In each case the accused was found guilty by a plea of guilty and were sentenced. John Hickey to 30 days solitary confinement in double irons on bread and water. And John McNeilly to be discharged the service with a bad conduct discharge and loss of 3 months pay as Coal Heaver which sentences were approved and ordered to be carried into execution by the power ordering the court. The second book the notebook contains detailed mechanical and engineering notes on such topics as iron ship construction the Dickinson Boiler analysis of salt water coal boiler appendages safety valves the Telescopic Smoke Pipe and many others. There are also incredible and immaculately drawn diagrams and drawings of many ship apparatuses including the ships screw propeller superheaters salinometer safety valves and illustrations on the different strains to which iron vessels are subjected when at sea. Many of these diagrams have numbers included on different parts of the drawing with the accompanying notes as to what each number represents. These diagrams and notes show the impressive amount of knowledge needed for a steamboat crewman in the U.S. Navy. It was during Grimess time at the Naval Academy that a Department of Steam Enginery was inaugurated meaning that Grimes may have been one of the first to be trained on steam engines at the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. There are also many pages of mathematical equations done by Grimes near the end of the book. Because the pages of equations tend to involve many different types of equations it is difficult to ascertain what the equations are of. However the many mentions of longitude and latitude it would seem many of the equations were done to calculate distance and position as would be crucial to know as the navigator of a mid-19th century ship. There is also a page with the names of 20 men who most probably served with him on the Dacotah. The notebook also has one 1 loose letter addressed to Rebecca dated July 30th 1865 and signed Affectionately. M. E. Smith. The letter is religious in nature reminding Rebecca of God and Jesus love. Who M. E. Smith was is unknown but Grimes did have a sister named Rebecca so it is possible she sent James Grimes this letter. The first book is titled in ink on front endpaper "Journal of Mids. Grimes Cruise on board U.S.S. Dakotah May 1868." It contains 162 pages of writing in very legible black ink. The cover shows some wear and tear. The book is in very good structural shape. The notebook contains 288 pages with over half containing some sort of writing or drawing. The writing is crisp and clear in ink just like the first book. The notebook is also in excellent structural shape. Background: James M. Grimes was born in 1847 in Cadiz Harrison County Ohio and entered the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1863. During Grimes naval career he served on various ships in both the Atlantic and the Pacific and at the navy yard in New York. He was injured in the line of duty and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander in 1886. He died on June 17 1924. The U.S.S. Dacotah 1859 was a large 996 long tons 1012 t steam sloop that served the United States Navy in the Atlantic Ocean as well as in Pacific Ocean. When the American Civil War occurred Dacotah assumed the role of a gunship in the Union blockade of the Confederate States of America. Following duty off the coasts of South and Central America Mexico and California until 26 July 1869 Dacotah remained in an inactive status until sold at Mare Island Navy Yard on 30 May 1873.; Manuscript; Folio - over 12" - 15" tall; KEYWORDS:HISTORY OF JAMES MCFADDEN GRIMES MIDSHIPMAN STEAMER DACOTAH GUNSHIP SLOOP-OF-WAR POST CIVIL WAR ERA PANAMA BAY ARICA PERU VALPARAISO CHILE NAVAL ACADEMY ANNAPOLIS MARYLAND COMMANDER W. JAMES R. FORSTER
1950s ORIGINAL TYPED MANUSCRIPT BY A MEXICO CITY COLLEGE STUDENT AND ONE DAY AUTHOR WITH WORLD FAMOUS SWEDISH EXPLORER TITLED 'WANDERING DOWN THE BALSAS RIVER MEXICO'
BALSAS RIVER MEXICO CENTRAL AMERICA. Good. 1950. On offer is a super original circa 1950s first person account of one man's sojourn down the Balsas River in Mexico. Titled "Wandering Down the Balsas River Mexico" written by James R. Forster who was attending the Mexico City College during the period his journal was kept and this may well have been a college paper or manuscript intended for publishing as casual research finds he did become an anthropologist and archaeologist and a published author. In 1951 wrote a thesis titled "Gingerbread figures of the Toltec-Mazapan Period." Two other books written by James were called "New Type of Sacrificial Knives from the Valley of Mexico" and "Masterkey". At the end of the journal he says his paper on the Mazapan period was suppose to be turned in 6 months before this trip was taken and thusly we assume he took this trip in 1951 or thereabouts. Two other people accompanied Forster: John Neris and Sten Bergman who we believe was the famed Swedish explorer Sten Bergman. Forster appears to confirm this stating at the outset that Sten "having climbed nearly all of the major mountain peaks in his spare time and now wanted to try something different." The 25 page typed manuscript approximately 300 words per page was likely written retrospectively from Forster's original handwritten notes perhaps. Adding immense depth to the manuscript are 12 superb original black and white 8" x 10" photos of the trip. Eight 8 smaller duplicate photos are identified and listed further on in the description. Historians and researchers of the area and era will be delighted. Here are some snippets: WANDERING DOWN THE BALSAS RIVER MEXICO; "I first learned of the river in my classes of Mexican archaeology at Mexico City College where the classes are taught in English. As the state of Guerrero is one of the least known areas in Mexico several of my professors had visited the region in search of archaeological ethnological and historical material. I never thought of making a trip to the region until Sten Bergman who lived in the boarding house where I stayed decided that he wanted to make a boat trip. He had climbed nearly all of the major mountain peaks in his spare time and now wanted to try something different; to go through an area marked "unexplored" on the map. When he began this trip many of the students at school wanted to go. By the time we were ready to go at the end of the school quarter the number had boiled down and only three were left Sten Bergman John Neris and myself" They take a train and cross the Pedregal Lava Beds and the Valley of Mexico and Valley of Morelos. On to the town of Tepotzlan and Igualla ".Two more hours and we were at Las Balsas. The station is at the end of the tracks immediately after crossing the Balsas River. The town which is not connected with any automobile road is strung out along the tracks. The current of the river is very swift here even in times of low water and everyone uses the railroad bridge to cross it. Near the station there was a man who looked tall and lanky like a Texan. He was the local Aftosa man from Texas sent here by the American and Mexican governments to inspect the cattle and livestock for the hoof-and-mouth disease. We soon learned that the best thing we could do was to look up an Aftosa man on entering the small town which lay on our route. He introduced us to his Mexican friends in town and they told us we were too late. The last boat had left the day before to be sold in Coyuca a town far down the river. As for burros there were none to be had. We were offered the opportunity of going with our new friend on his inspection route but we turned it down because it lay south of the river and did not pass near any known archaeological sites. That night we laid our sleeping bags along side his in a small warehouse and got what sleep can be had on a cement floor. In the morning we took the train back to Iguala. We had not given up but planned to return to the river at another point. We changed to the bus which took the new unpaved road to Altamirano across the river from Coyuca. This meant that we had to bypass the archaeological sites near Tetela del Rio Mound of the River.." Crossed a "new" bridge over the river then they hitched a ride in a truck to Plateros gold mining town where they purchased burro's. "We did not sleep well or it was our first night on the trail and there was no protection from bandits. Here the people were strange and popular belief held that it was unsafe to sleep out in the open. The truth is that you are more likely to be robbed in the city than in the country any country. The next day on coming back into town we met the local Aftosa man. His name was Fisher and of course he was a Texan. Having heard that we were in town he tried to find us but did not know where we had gone. Fisher earns a good salary inspecting cattle but has no place to spend it. Because of this he has become the town benefactor. He and the other Aftosa men have opened up the country for outsiders at least for Americans. It is hard to set a value on the goodwill that they have made for United States. On returning from vacations in Mexico City Fisher would bring back books paper and pencils for the school children. They are not free as in most parts of the United States. Once a week he brought them "paletas" or popsicles. We found out that a friend of his living there in Plateros owned the building on the corner near school in Mexico City. According to the map this was on the edge of unexplored territory. We began to wonder if we were very far from civilization after all." He showed them around to many of the Mexican "Mounds" where there were tunnels full of "Escorpion Real" or the Royal Scorpion. They also found a baby vulture they photographed. "There was a local fiesta the next day March 25 but there was nothing to see. The only thing of interest was that we met the man who was to be the "devil". He wore a devil's costume and was to chase the women. We understood that provided he caught them he was free to do with them whatever he pleased. This looks like an old Indian custom as it does not appear to be something that the good padres of the church would introduce" They then walked 11 hours to Zintandaro Ziandaro and on to Mexiguio ".The companero who did not speak English gave us a room on the street. There were no bars on the window and people looked in at us but it was too hot to close the shutters. We soon got used to the natives who would sit just outside of our camp for several hours without saying a word. There wasn't much sleep that night not because we were un-certain of our surroundings but because we ached all over from the long days walk. By over doing it the first day we put a damper on the rest of the trip and each other's nerves. The next day we bathed in the river according to local custom. The water felt good but the bottom was rocky and our feet tender. Most of the morning was spent resting. In the afternoon we went to Mexiquito an Aztec fortress a few miles down the river. This archeological site is located near the entrance to the Tacambaro River from the north into the Balsas. It consists of pyramids courts ball-courts and plazas all of which are heavily overgrown with trees cactus and thorny bushes. Some day after it has been excavated and rebuilt it will be an excellent tourist attraction. I don't know the road but it should be possible to drive there in dry weather in a truck or jeep." Tamarindo and Churumuco where they waited for days for a truck any truck to come along to take them to the next spot "The loading of the sacks of grain was slow but it seemed slower. Each sack had to be weighed carefully and then placed onto the truck by a poor "mozo" laborer. The loading of the grain was finally completed and we started off into the night. After about ten miles the driver stopped the truck for the night. He did not bother parking off of the road for no one drove on that road at night and very few in the daytime. We made ourselves as comfortable as possible on the truck and did not sleep on the ground for we were taking no chances of being left behind. At four or five o'clock in the morning the truck started again. As we went along the road climbed out of the dry tropical area and eventually into the pine covered mountains of Michoacan" Ario de Rosales and Patzcuaro Lake "On approaching Patzcuaro he pointed out "la laguna' and there below us lay Lake Patzcuaro like a piece of turquoise in a setting of dark green serpentine. On one of the islands which we saw in the lake the Tarascan Empire had its birth. On another island is the great statue of Morelos the priest-general. You can climb inside the statue and from the cuff of his extended arm see the whole lake region below you. It is an easy climb to the top. Later that summer my mother who was seventy one at the time climbed up the trail to the base of the statue. She took one look at it and said that she wasn't going to the top. Inside it was a different story. Between each short flight of steps there was a series of pictures depicting the life of this early revolutionist. My mother became engrossed in the pictures and before she knew it was looking out the cuff of Morelos's sleeve at the lake below." "Our train reached Mexico City at 7:30 A.M. the next morning. Hot baths were the first order of the day. The trip took two weeks and two days. Our friends had begun to worry about us because they had received no word. Sten and John went back to their classes. I went back to my thesis on Mazapan figures which was six months late when I left on the trip. Recently John visited me here in California. He had just come from Mexico and brought word that Sten was again overdue on one of his excursions. I later received a copy of the school paper from Mexico City College which announced his return from the famous Baranca de Cobre Cooper Canyon in southern Chihuahua. He and his friends approached the canyon from the north by driving the twenty eight miles from Creel to the rim of the canyon on an old railroad bed that never had any tracks. It took a recent scientific expedition a week by burro to approach it from the west. Sten is now working in Los Angeles. He wants to go back to that fabulous canyon and after looking at his pictures I want to go too. June 1953. Inglewood California. James R. Forster." The small identified photos they are as follows; 1 A section of the Pedragal where the new university has been built. Photo by James R. Forster. 2 Approaching Tamarindo Guerrero Photo by John Neris. 3 Family at Los Negritos West of Melonar Guerrero. Photo by John Neris. 4 Farm house west of Mexiquito Guerrero. Photo by James R. Forster. 8 Mask from Placeros del Oro Guerrero; Metate from Melonar Guerrero; Head and mask from Altamirano Guerrero. Photo by James R. Forster. The pages are housed in a light mustard colored folder that measures about 9" x 11 ". The pages and photos are in good shape the cover is very worn. Overall G. BACKGROUND REFERENCE: Wikipedia: The Balsas River Spanish Ro Balsas also locally known as the Mezcala River or Atoyac River is a major river of south-central Mexico. The basin flows through the states of Puebla Morelos Guerrero and Mexico. The river empties into the Pacific Ocean at Mangrove Point adjacent to the city of Lzaro Crdenas Michoacn. Several rapids along the course of the Balsas River limit its navigability and thus the river has been largely used for generation of hydroelectric power flood control and irrigation. With a length of some 771 kilometers 479 mi the Balsas River is one of Mexico's longest rivers. It originates at the confluence of the San Martin and Zahuapan Rivers as Atoyac River in the state of Puebla. From here it flows south-west and then westward into a depression through the state of Guerrero and discharges into the Pacific Ocean. ; Manuscript; 4to - over 9" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF JAMES R. The five year also offers up a mystery the author never answers - the diary starting in 1908 is faithfully written throughout but for some reason there is not a single word written of 1912 and no clue or hint why White would write madly hardly ever missing a day for 4 years right up until December 31st 1911 and then not another word until January 1st 1913. Otherwise White records every person he meets has lunch or dinner with a one word or line critique on the hundreds of shows he sees and concerts he attends not to mention all manner of comments on his myriad of meetings for school and social life. He has two children - boys - but never a mention of a Mrs. and it is hard to get a handle on which if any of his frequent dates are more special than the others. He does go out alot with the wives of his associates usually to artistic functions. Here are some snippets: "Am delighted to exchange alnight with Miss H. whom I consider one of my most intelligent friends. She is almost masculinely masterful in what she does." "Expected a call from Mr. Faye but he did not come. He is like many musicians unreliable and not much for working with." "Feeling fairly well used up. Did not sleep well last night. My social pleasures must be curtailed and help me in work." I could go on and on. A more detailed reading of this many hundreds of pages within this archive will I am sure reveal much more about this fascinating educated social man. The 5 year is 8vo. 1914 is 48mo and the rest in between. The 5 year is fragile with regard to the cover but interior is very fine. JAMES ROSS
1846 - 1849 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY DETAILING THIS YOUNG TEACHER'S EDUCATION TO BECOME A MEDICAL DOCTOR
CASTLETON VERMONT ELIZABETHTOWN NEW JERSEY NJ. Poor. 1846. On offer is a very interesting original 1846 - 1849 manuscript diary handwritten by James Ross a hardworking young teacher turned medical student. James at some point moved to Castleton Vermont in Rutland County and worked in the area while teaching school. He then goes on to study medicine with a local doctor and eventually moves to Elizabethtown New Jersey 69 Canal Street where he matriculates at New York City College. His daily life is on every page of this small leather bound journal that he easily carried in his pocket and took it everywhere with him it seems. We learn in Castleton that he taught school "had 12 scholars today a good day" worked in a small drug store and studied medicine with Dr. Eliakin Paul. James mentions the name Woodward several times and casual research informs us that Mr. Woodward owned the first drug store in town working from his home. Eventually the drug store was erected on the corner east of the Methodist Church where they did a large business furnishing medicines to physicians in the vicinity also to graduates of the medical college. The store also sold surgical instruments as James Ross mentions in this diary. James keeps meticulous notations as to the price of numerous items he would purchase monies paid to him for books money borrowed from his brother or relative; Reuben Ross Jr.; where and with who he lived in a boarding house; where he "staid overnight"; the names of his friends and of his diversions. He mentions Dr. Nichols Dr. Parker and his lectures Dr. Paul Dr. Page Dr. Clark Gillman Barker Mott lectures etc. His daily notes include the 4th of July fire works in Vermont were the best he had ever seen; goes to visit the Woodruff family at Connecticut Farms and rode there with Mr. Fortought; Woodruffs all well went to a prayer meeting at the old schoolhouse and saw some old friends; apparently James was originally from Connecticut. Got back home to VT went to work all day delivered some medicine to A. Hotch; some elixir and then went to hear Dr. Bostwick speak. James went to the hospital to see soldiers that were sick and being treated with lead wash and liniment. Went to Hope Chapel to listen to Mr. Buckingham and Mr. Chapin talk about capital punishment and came away "fully convinced capital punishment should be established. "Went to a camp meeting in Fairhaven where he attended a lecture with "nearly 30 students together." Went to Chatham Theatre and to the museum where he saw a giant boy etc. He purchases new clothes had his boots renailed sheared sheep for his father went hunting and killed a pheasant and attended the Methodist church in town. Heard a lot of swearing at a political meeting in Sept. where "men were caucusing in every direction." Went to the fair in Rutland Vermont etc. Went to town clerk and took the oath for surveying closed on a few deeds. Certainly a very busy young man with a lot of "irons in the fire"; teaching working studying medicine and having somewhat of a social life as he writes of numerous friends. James has written a few names and addresses in this journal to include: H. Fisher 122 Pearl Street NY J. Vaness corner of Jackson and Johnson Street Brooklyn P. S. Denmore and Ed Price 107 Fulton ST. Doctor Oatman 111 Eldridge St. Nelson Eddy 89 Pearl ST. NY etc. Now he writes about the list of books he will need for medical school and there are quite a few. He took the Sommerville Railroad and then onto a boat to get to New York. He went to Brooklyn to visit the Navy Yard and eventually on to Elizabethtown NJ where he now settles in to live and attend medical college in NYC. James mentions 77 Fulton Street in New York and O.O. Wickham's class. Condition of the small 2 1/2 x 4 inch leather bound 178 pages book is rather poor with several pages are loose and the interior pages are attempting to come loose from the spine yet still holding; the outside leather case had a snap cover at one time however the snap is missing. Leather shows wear and scuffing. Overall Poor.; Manuscript; 64mo - up to 3" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF JAMES ROSS CASTLETON PHYSICIAN VERMONT RUTLAND COUNTY ELIZABETHTOWN NEW JERSEY DR. JAMES SHEERIN
1885 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL HAND WRITTEN BY A 20 YEAR OLD ST. STEPHEN'S COLLEGE MAN WELL ON HIS WAY TO HARVARD CAMBRIDGE AND THE PRIESTHOOD
NEW YORK UNITED STATES. Good. 1885. On offer is a very well-written journal of a young man who went on to play a significant role in the Episcopal Church in New England in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Dating from 1885 the hard-bound journal measures 7 1/2 by 4 has about 180 pages and is about 50% complete. The binding on the spine is broken but all pages are intact. The writing is legible. James Sheerin was born in Scotland in 1865. Brought to the United States at age five by his parents he enrolled at St. Stephen's College NY now Bard College in 1885. Graduating in 1888 he filled several roles in the Episcopal Church and was ordained a priest in 1892. Sheerin had a varied and successful career. He continued his studies with stints at Harvard and Cambridge and served in several parishes notably in New York City and Cambridge. He passed away in 1933. This journal dates from 1885 when Sheerin entered St. Stephen's College. It does not follow a day-by-day chronology but rather serves as a journal where he recorded thoughts over a period of 2 years. He talks about how he sought work to pay for his education and clearly was no fan of working underground in the mines: ". I had not the money to pay that fifty dollars . and then no decent clothes! I looked everywhere for work but none presented itself except coal mining but I would not take that having vowed when I quit the mines never to return". He did finally agree to work in an open-pit mine. He suffered some injuries but was able to continue and pay for his education. In 1887 he wrote about what he was reading: ". Today I read Gray's Elegy written in a Country Churchyard. It is the first opportunity I have had to read this elegant poem and to speak briefly. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It reminded me so much of Goldsmith's style in the "Deserted Village" and is in every way equal to it in beauty and elegance of diction. ." In commenting on his studies and reading one can see the foundation for his later career being laid down: "In the last year I have read a number of books on oratory extemporaneous speaking Lectures on preaching etc. I read nearly all of the Yale lectures on preaching and enjoyed them thoroughly. John Hall's and Phillip Brook's were very interesting. The later is my ideal as a preacher. . He is such a grand man intellectually and morally ." He also made it clear his attitudes towards certain other characteristics he had obviously seen: ". His referring to Brooks reputation is almost wholly from his power as a pulpit orator and his goodness and charity a contrast with his contemporaries who dabble in politics humourous lectures etc." Toward the end he writes: ". These lectures are splendid things and if I study as I am doing the different styles of oratory used I certainly ought to form a fair judgement of what true oratory is." His last entry is in many ways a synopsis of his professional life: "He always read and studied men and things". This is an excellent insight into the early stages of James Sheerin's formation as a priest and orator. Not only valuable to a researcher delving into the history of the Episcopal Church it also opens a window into liberal arts education in late Victorian America.; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF 19TH CENTURY 1880S UNITED STATES DUTCHESS COUNTY NEW YORK HUDSON VALLEY JAMES SHEERIN EPISCOPAL CHURCH ST. JAMES STOCKER.
Krisdosçin siyreti [BOOK in TURKISH WITH ARMENIAN LETTERS].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original decorative black cloth bdg. 12mo. (17,5 x 11,5 cm). In Turkish with Armenian letters. 206 p. "Armenian letters used by Ottoman Armenians and Gregorian Kipchaks have differences in terms of spelling and writing style. Also in terms of word existence, borrowed words from the Slavic language in Gregorian Kipchak Turkish are more. Arabic and Persian words, on the other hand, are partly seen in some works. However, Armenian words are very limited. It is seen that a differentiating language according to the region and quality of the work is used in the works by Armenians under Ottoman rule. In such works, there are Arabic and Persian words along with the Anatolian accents. Writing Turkish texts with Armenian letters is come across in manuscripts after the 14th century and in pressed works after the 18th century. Armenian books started to be pressed in printing houses after the beginning of the 16th century. The first Turkish book with Armenian letters was pressed in Venice in 1876 by Sivasli Mikhitar, the founder of the Union of Mikhitarists. The number of the pressed books is quite a lot. Works written in Armenian Turkish and letters in Ottoman lands are generally categorized into five groups. These are the works of Armenian poet-singers (asug), written literary works, translations, newspapers, journals, and epitaphs. It is possible to classify this classification with a more general approach by also including Kipchak areas as such: literary works (it is possible to consider this as oral and written works), dictionaries, and works on language, translations, legal documents, historical works, and periodicals.". (Source: On Turkish Texts With Armenian Letters, Özkan). Krisdosçin siyreti. Miracles of Jesus Christ. First Edition. Stepanyan 1183.
