Lo choro è il principale genere di musica popolare strumentale brasiliana, nato nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento a Rio de Janeiro attraverso un processo di brasilianizzazione delle danze di origine europea, come la polka, e vivo ancora oggi, non solo in Brasile, in un rapporto di interscambio con altri generi come il samba, il jazz e la musica classica. In questo testo Raffaele Bella ne traccia un percorso storico che, partendo dalle origini e passando per il Novecento (dove emerge su tutti la figura di Pixinguinha), arriva all'epoca attuale, una fase in cui lo choro si sta sviluppando in tutto il mondo, anche in Europa e in Italia, attraverso la diffusione di alcuni strumenti e delle relative tecniche: cavaquinho, chitarra a sette corde e pandeiro, oltre ovviamente ai più "tradizionali" chitarra a sei corde, mandolino, flauto e altri strumenti della tradizione. A partire dal lavoro di alcuni dei maggiori studiosi e divulgatori brasiliani dell'argomento, quali Ary Vasconcelos, Henrique Cazes, André Diniz e altri, l'autore presenta una narrazione che fa tesoro della sua decennale esperienza sul campo, fatta di ascolti, incontri e raccolte di documenti vari quali dischi, spartiti, libri, testimonianze.

Ambros zum Beweis seiner unbegrenzten verehrung und hochachtung". - Am Titelblatt seiner 1869 bei Sartori erschienenen Komposition "Tu es Petrus". - Anfangs Priester, wurde Bella nach dem Tode seines Gönners, des Bischofs Stefan Moyses, Stadt- und Kirchenmusikdirektor in Kremnitz, "wo er sich um das Aufblühen des Musiklebens sehr verdient machte. Bella stand in regem Verkehr mit den besten Musikern seiner Zeit; sogar Franz Liszt und Bedrich Smetana waren ihm freundlich zugetan" (MGG XV, 618). Fehlender Aussichten wegen entschloß er sich seinen Priesterberuf aufzugeben, Kirche und Heimat zu verlassen und nach Hermannstadt zu gehen, wo er Kantor bei der evangelischen Stadtkirche wurde. "Obwohl er das Musikleben der Stadt zum Aufblühen brachte (er setzte sich als Dirigent der Philharmonie für die Aufführung der zeitgenössischen Musik ein, besonders der von Richard Strauss, in dem er einen dankbaren Freund gewann), waren auch hier seinem Wirken enge Grenzen gezogen. Seine Oper 'Wieland der Schmied' konnte Bella erst 1926 auf der Preßburger Opernbühne sehen. Mit seiner Rückkehr in die slowakische Heimat im Alter von fast 80 Jahren wandte sich Bella wieder der Komposition zu und schuf noch einige Werke im Geiste der nationalen Romantik, die allerdings schon nicht mehr zeitgemäß war" (ebd.). - Mit mehreren Randeinrissen und -läsuren.

He was the organist and choirmaster of multiple New Jersey churches including the First Presbyterian Church of Morristown and was a member of the American Guild of Organists the Manuscript Society of New York and the MacDowell Club New York Times. The book has it's original ribbed cloth binding. The book covers have some light bumping rubbing and wear along with several small to smallish edge tears to the spine ends. The spine of the book has some sunning and there are several spots of rubbing / discoloration to the front and rear panels. The text pages are mostly clean and bright though there is some light toning to the page edges. There is a previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown page and a faint previous owner's red penciled name on the front endpaper. "A glee is a type of English part song composed during the Late Baroque Classical and early Romantic periods roughly the Georgian era taken together. The respectable and artistic character of glees contrasts with the bawdiness of the many catches which continued to be composed and sung well into the early years of the 19th century. The use of the countertenor voice on the upper parts in glees composed for men's voices and on the Alto parts in those for mixed voices is a particular characteristic of the form the most famous exponent known for his elegant ornamentation was William Knyvett and serves to distinguish glees from other male voice partsongs which usually lack countrapuntal writing and have the top part taken by a tenor. This gives them a highest note around a major third below that of men's voice glees. Some care is required in interpreting the intended voicing of glees in contemporary editions due to the gradual replacement taking place at this time of the C clef with the treble clef but often without the required octave transposition being specified. 1 S. Folio. An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten: "Das Melde'sche Werk über Akustik ist eine Arbeit, die mir ihrer großen Klarheit wegen außerordentlich gefällt. Ich habe mir alle Mühe gegeben, einen Bericht darüber zu schreiben, doch bin ich der Sache nicht gewachsen. Der Inhalt des Buches ist physikalisch, über Musik ist darin so gut wie nichts zu finden. Sie verzeihen mir daher gütigst, wenn ich Ihnen das Werk zurückschicke. Ich hoffe in einiger Zeit Ihnen über einen anderen Gegenstand einen kleinen Aufsatz geben zu können [...]". - Der Privatschüler von August Eduard Grell wurde 1866 Professor der Musik an der Berliner Universität. Er verfaßte "Die Mensuralnoten und Taktzeichen des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts" (1858). 1883 erschien seine "Akustik".
