br. «A Survivor from Warsaw (1947) di Schönberg sembrava fatto apposta per irritare ogni nervo scoperto dell'Europa del dopoguerra. Un brano dodecafonico in tre lingue sull'Olocausto, scritto per il pubblico americano da un compositore ebreo, la cui opera era stata il primo esempio di musica degenerata. La decisione di inserirlo in programma, eseguirlo, recensirlo è sempre stata frutto di un disegno ben preciso.» Il successo nell'Europa postbellica di questa cantata, capace di essere assieme grido corale dei «salvati», straziante invocazione al Dio di Israele, memoriale in musica della Shoah, è stato tanto immediato e sorprendente quanto controverso. Joy H. Calico in queste pagine cerca di analizzar-lo attraverso sei casi di ricezione emblematici: Germania Ovest, Austria, Norvegia, da una parte; Germania Est, Polonia e Cecoslovacchia, dall'altra. Sei paesi usciti con esiti diversi dalla Seconda guerra mondiale e i cui assetti politici hanno influenzato in vario modo l'accoglienza della trasfigurazione artistica di quel trauma. Sei esperienze differenti attraversate però da temi comuni, che rivelano le tensioni sotterranee al continente: la memoria dell'Olocausto e il senso di colpa; la convivenza di ebrei ed ex nazisti; l'antisemitismo e la presenza di forze occupanti da entrambi i lati della cortina di ferro. L'indagine di Calico è completata in questa edizione da Paolo Dal Molin, che approfondisce la fortuna di Un sopravvissuto di Varsavia nell'Italia degli anni cinquanta e sessanta. Una fortuna che, da un lato, consolidò la reputazione di Schönberg contribuendo a farlo divenire una delle figure più influenti per la nuova generazione di compositori; dall'altro, manifestò le contraddittorietà di un paese in piena ricostruzione, che non aveva ancora elaborato una coscienza collettiva della persecuzione e del genocidio degli ebrei.

Fly photograph of Geronimo on the Warpath owned by Charles Lummis who supplied a short introductory essay titled "Geronimo The Apache Prophet." Also printed on the cover is the dedication "To Mrs. Rita Breeze of Los Angeles California." Breeze was a librettist who collaborated with Troyer on several projects. In July 1944 one year before she left Athens for New York Maria Kalogeropoulou would perform the role of Smaragda in the Manolis Kalomiris opera The Masterbuilder at the venue conducted by the composer himself and directed by Sokratis Karantinos; days later in August 1944 she would also play Leonora there in Beethoven's Fidelio conducted by Hans Hörner and directed by Oscar Wallek. A full thirteen years later in 1957 and having since conquered the world Maria Meneghini-Callas would return to the Odeon of Herodes Atticus to give an historic recital at the Athens Festival featuring arias from Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde Giuseppe Verdi's La forza del destino and Il trovatore Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor and Ambroise Thomas' Hamlet conducted by Antonino Votto. In 1957 Callas was invited by the Constantine Karamanlis government to appear in the third Athens Festival giving two recitals at the ancient open-air theater on the 1st and 5th of August. Daily newspapers owned by publisher Dimitris Lambrakis attacked the government using Callass steep at the time performance fee of $9000 for the two recitals. The Athens Summer Festival which had only recently been established badly needed tourism and naturally relied heavily on Callas concerts. The leaders of the opposition refused to be present at the premiere as a sign of their disapproval of Callas "scandalous" fee. Because of demonstrations her first scheduled performance was cancelled. However she kept her date with her second scheduled Athens performance on August 5th despite the continuing attacks against her from the opposition press during the intervening weekend. 1.5 JM FRT01. The Athens Summer Festival which had only recently been established badly needed tourism and naturally relied heavily on Callas concerts. The leaders of the opposition refused to be present at the premiere as a sign of their disapproval of Callas "scandalous" fee. Because of demonstrations her first scheduled performance was cancelled. However she kept her date with her second scheduled Athens performance on August 5th despite the continuing attacks against her from the opposition press during the intervening weekend. 1.5 JM FRT01.
