Penciled note from Lobo "A comparatively late issue with some errors corrected". Moses Finzi Lobo was born in Bridgetown, Barbados, West Indies (1834). He came to Philadelphia about 1845, and lived there until his death (1904). He was a respected journalist, scholar, author, and leader in community affairs. His skill and knowledge of shorthand was exceptional, and he was frequently called upon to record scientific addresses, and other important events. He served as private secretary to the Superintendent of the Mint, before resigning that post to engage in literary work. We feel fortunate to be able to present Short-Hand books owned by him. I Beatles prima dei Beatles. 1956-1963: dalle origini a «Love me do» e all'esplosione della Beatlemania

Negli anni della loro gloria mondiale, non pochi devono essere stati i momenti in cui i Fab Four volentieri si sarebbero sottratti alla "persecuzione" di occhi e obiettivi puntati continuamente su di loro. Ma c'è stato un periodo, tra la fine degli anni Cinquanta e l'inizio degli anni Sessanta, in cui i neonati Beatles si aggiravano per Liverpool e dintorni desiderosi proprio di essere riconosciuti, intervistati e fotografati, disposti a suonare praticamente ovunque ci fosse del pubblico ad ascoltarli. E quando, alla fine del 1962, fu pubblicato Love Me Do, primo singolo del gruppo e miccia esplosiva di un fenomeno planetario, già avevano alle spalle una consistente gavetta fatta di esibizioni su palchi scalcinati, infruttuose selezioni per show televisivi, tournées traballanti e repentini cambi di formazione. L'argomento di questo libro è dunque proprio il periodo della storia "beatlesiana" che va dal 1956 al 1963. Anni impetuosi ed eroici qui raccontati non solo a parole ma anche con moltissime immagini che restituiscono, nella grana imperfetta delle istantanee, l'atmosfera elettrizzante di quei giorni. Alcuni di questi scatti, tra l'altro, rappresentano una miracolosa sopravvivenza alla distruzione imposta dal manager Brian Epstein, il quale li aveva giudicati troppo informali e disinvolti per l'immagine pubblica dei suoi protetti. Scandite da una dettagliata cronologia che segue i quattro di Liverpool tra prove, concerti e tour, queste pagine ospitano anche un'ampia ed esclusiva documentazione rinvenuta negli archivi della Repubblica Federale di Germania (relativa al turbolento periodo amburghese) e una tra le più ampie bibliografie "beatlesiane" mai realizzate, con oltre 700 titoli. Quando John e Paul si conobbero a Liverpool il 6 luglio 1957, in occasione della festa parrocchiale di St. Peter, nessuno dei due immaginava cosa sarebbe nato dal loro incontro. Questo libro è una cronaca ben documentata di quel "prima". Prima che il mondo fosse per sempre conquistato dal mito dei Beatles.

La canzone rebetika. Storie d'amore, di droga e di coltello
La canzone rebetika è la storia di uno dei più interessanti e intriganti fenomeni musicali che sia mai apparso sulle sponde del Mediterraneo. Approdata in Italia anche grazie alla originale rilettura proposta da Vinicio Capossela, la canzone rebetika - dal 2017 patrimonio culturale immateriale dell'UNESCO - nasce a Smirne, alla fine dell'Ottocento, espressione di ambienti sociali emarginati che convogliavano nel canto l'amarezza di un profondo disagio. Paragonabile al blues americano o al fado portoghese, il rebetiko è un genere che ha dato molto all'identità della musica ellenica e cui devono molto grandi compositori come Theodorakis e Chatsidakis. La puntuale, rigorosissima ricostruzione di Sangiglio restituisce compiutamente il fondale antropologico nel quale il fenomeno nacque e si affermò, offrendo al lettore una rara pagina di storia. In allegato al volume un CD contenente una ricca e significativa selezione di brani curata da Panos Savvopulos, tra i massimi esperti del genere musicale. Autori: Crescenzio Sangiglio.
