<b>A SCARCE LITTLE BLACK SAMBO AN OPERETTA FOR "JUVENILE VOICES" PUBLISHED BY J. FISCHER & BRO. FOR SCHOOL ENTERTAINMENTS.<br /><br />Music arranged and libretto written by Henry P. Cross. INSCRIBED BY CROSS dated 1937. Inscription is personal and a bit wacky. Written in 1936 - the 3 characters speak in stereotypical black dialect. </b>Book's owner F.E. Cross wrote his name in pencil at top edge of cover. He was probably related to the author. There are 2 pages of advertising at the back of the book - for children's musical school plays. The back cover has illustrated advertising for "Peter Rabbit" and "Goldilocks and the Bears" Operettas - both by Henry P. Cross. The front cover is black over orange title & illustration of " Little Black Sambo". There are 2 small chips at the bottom edge and a crease. Front cover spine has 2 spots where the paper pulled away from the 2 staples - but it is still tight & attached. Small corner crease at bottom right side.<br />At the end of song No. 4 - a cast of characters are listed - and the M in Mumbo is made larger by pen by a child. Zusammen (2½ +1 =) 3½ SS. auf 3 Bll. 8vo und Visitkartenformat. An den namentlich nicht genannten Albert Graf Amadei (1851-1894): "Freudige Nachricht! Ich beeile mich Ihnen mitzutheilen, daß dennoch Capellmeister Dessof[f] accompagnirt [...]" (a. d. Brief). - "Ich theile Ihnen in Eile mit daß Capellmeister Dessof[f] morgen Sonntag zwischen 11-12 Vormittag zu mir kommt [...]" (a. d. Visitenkarte). - Die Tochter eines Synagogenkantors erfuhr ihre Ausbildung an der Elevenschule der Budapester Oper, wo sie 1844 in der Uraufführung der Oper Hunyadi László debütierte. "Nach Studien bei Heinrich Proch kam Csillag an das Berliner Hoftheater, wo sie als Fides in Meyerbeers 'Propheten' auf der Bühne stand, wurde schließlich 1850 an das Wiener Theater am Kärntnertor engagiert und gehörte diesem Ensemble bis 1861 als Primadonna an. Ihr Repertoire umfaßte Alt-, Mezzosopran- sowie Sopranpartien; sie sang u. a. die Ortrud im 'Lohengrin', die Titelheldin in 'Lucrezia Borgia' und die Azucena im 'Troubadur'. Seit 1861 gab Csillag zahlreiche Gastspiele an allen bedeutenden europäischen Bühnen und hatte erfolgreiche Auftritte in Moskau und St. Petersburg" (DBE).
