Geburtstag. - Grothe war Pianist, Arrangeur und Komponist für das Tanzorchester Dajos Béla und die Tonaufnahmen-Firma Lindström AG in Berlin. Nach dem Durchbruch des Tonfilms wurde er schnell zu einem der gesuchtesten Filmkomponisten in Deutschland, schrieb und arrangierte für alle großen deutschen Filmstudios, war kurze Zeit auch in Hollywood tätig und leitete 1940-45 das Deutsche Rundfunk Tanz- und Unterhaltungsorchester Berlin. Von 1929 bis 1969 schuf er die Musik zu über 170 Filmen, darunter ‘Die schwedische Nachtigall’, ‘Das Haus in Monteviedeo’, ‘Ich denke oft an Piroschka’, ‘Das Wirtshaus im Spessart’ und ‘Effi Briest’.

Meyer publizierten "Ballade für Violoncello mit Orchesterbegleitung" (op. 40) und Anweisungen für die Druckfassung des Cellokonzerts in C-dur (op. 38). Groß verwehrt sich gegen die Bezeichnung des Werks als "Concertino" durch den Verleger: "Ich habe aber mit Absicht nicht Konzertino, sondern 'Concert' getauft; weil das für den Inhalt meiner Komposition eine passendere Benennung ist, da jeder Satz selbstständig bestehen könnte etc. Man möge also gefälligst meine Titel ungeändert lassen, zumal ein möglicher Vorwurf von der Kritik keinen Schaden thäte; denn es ließe sich nicht anders, als durch hergebrachte Sitte entschuldigen und wäre deshalb nicht stichhaltig. Nennt man z. B. die Cismollsonate Sonatine, weil der erste Satz ein adagioartiges Stück ist? -- oder die Cdur und Fdur Sonaten für Pf. u. Vcello Sonatinen, weil sie nur aus zwei Sätzen, ohne Adagio und Scherzo, bestehen?" Abschließend kündigt Groß "Duettinos und 4 Salonstücke" für die nächsten Wochen an. - Der lange in Vergessenheit geratene Wegbegleiter Robert Schumanns und Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys wurde seit dem Schumann-Fest von 2004 als bedeutender romantischer Komponist besonders für das Cello-Repertoire wiederentdeckt. In seiner kurzen, aber rasanten Karriere war Groß erster Solocellist des Leipziger Gewandhausorchesters (1830-33) unter August Pohlenz und ab 1835 erster Cellist des Kaiserlichen Hoforchesters in St. Petersburg. - Auf Briefpapier mit geprägtem Briefkopf; mit Spuren von alter Restaurierung im linken oberen Eck und mit Stempel der Handschriftensammlung J. K. Riess.
