Brigham Bishop's last and best song" though it does not appear to be his last song according to the Levy Collection at John Hopkins Bishop was publishing music as late as 1898. Beautiful letter to a friend at the Paris Opera concerning the audition of a young soprano named Gardis that had to be postponed due to a cold: "Mlle Gardis, le soprano [...] dont je vous ai parlé l'autre jour, et à qui vous m'avez bien voulu promettre de donner votre appui auprès de Mr Gaillard, vient d'attraper un gros rhume ! Ne voulant pas se présenter dans de mauvaises conditions, elle préfère attendre jusqu'au mois prochain pour son audition à l'Opéra. Elle s'était fait inscrire pour jeudi prochain, selon votre conseil. Je vous prie donc, mon cher Confrère, de vouloir bien, au mois de Novembre, vous souvenir de ma demande". - The visiting card was to thank an unnamed recipient: "Tous mes remerciements". - Although she was never admitted to the Paris Conservatory, Holmès received lessons from Henri Lambert, Hyacinthe Klosé, and César Franck, whom she considered her most important teacher. Like many female composers of the 19th century, Holmès initially published under a male pseudonym ("Hermann Zenta"). She was particularly successful as a composer of programme music and symphonic music. In 1889 she was commissioned to write the "Ode triomphale" for the Universal Exhibition, which required around 1200 musicians. Holmès first heard Richard Wagner's work at age 13 and was strongly influenced by the German composer ever since. - The letter on stationery with embossed monogram "B.D.". The visiting card with lithographed name and traces of former mounting.

Meine Freude darüber, daß die Hochländer sobald in Rotterdam in Scene gehen, würde eine ungetheilte sein, könnte ich mit meiner Frau, wie ich so sehr wünschte, zu Ihnen kommen. Aber der Arzt u. mein Befinden verbieten es. Ich leide über 2 Monate an ganz entsetzlichen Magenkrämpfen. Reisen u. Aufregungen, so freudiger Art sie waren, machten das Übel nicht besser. Jetzt muß ich ruhig zu Haus sein, viel liegen u. darf mich gar nicht beschäftigen, noch weniger Musik hören oder selbst ausüben [...]". - Der Sohn des herzoglich braunschweigischen Obersts und Kriegsrats Werner von Holstein kam 1853 nach Leipzig, wo er bei Moritz Hauptmann Kontrapunkt studierte und bei Ignaz Moscheles Klavierunterricht nahm. Nach Aufenthalten in Rom, Berlin und Paris übernahm er in Leipzig die Leitung der Bach-Gesellschaft und war Gründungsmitglied des Bach-Vereins. Neben drei Opern schrieb er zwei Ouvertüren, eine Kantate, kammermusikalische Werke und Klavierstücke und hatte einen hervorragenden Ruf als Liedkomponist.
