‎A History Of Music In Pictures‎

‎London / New York: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd. Very Good. 1930. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This is an oversized book. The book is in Very Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some rubbing and wear. There is some light fraying to the spine ends and corners as well. The book covers have several small spots of ground-in dirt and discoloration. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown page. "Kinsky began his career as an antiquarian books dealer becoming the assistant of Albert Kopfermann at the Berlin State Library in 1908. He gained his PhD in 1925 in Cologne writing his thesis about wind instruments. He became Privatdozent of musicology at the University of Cologne teaching from 1921 to 1932 and curator of the Wilheim Heyer Museum of Music History. Kinsky was an acknowledged specialist of musical instruments and their history and had written the 1910-1916 catalogue of the museum. Being the son of a Jewish businessman Kinsky was persecuted by the Nazis which lead to the forced termination of his career as an academic and the forced possession of his private library and collection. Kinsky then served a year in a labour camp until 1945 with the Allied Victory of World War Two. Kinsky spent the rest of his life from 1945 onwards compiling Das Werk Beethovens a thematic index of all of the works of Ludwig van Beethoven. Although Kinsky died before finishing the work the unfinished volume was purchased by the Bavarian State Library and was eventually completed by musicologist Hans Halm. " from Wikipedia . J. M. ‎Sheet music: The Absent-Minded Beggar No. 1 in C‎

‎London: Enoch & Sons / The Daily Mail 1899. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. Folio. 9pp. Wrappers. Notched along the spine with the pages numbered in ink by hand from once being bound within an album music shop stamp on the front wrapper rubbing to the exterior still a very good and complete copy. For voice and piano. Plate imprint "E & S 2703." "For every copy sold of this song one shilling goes to The Daily Mail fund for the relief of the sufferers by the war" from the front cover. This charitable effort by The Daily Mail to raise money for soldiers and their families during the Second Boer War was reportedly the first of its kind. Kipling wrote the lyrics specifically to be used in this fashion and is quoted as saying "It's catchpenny verse and I want it to catch just as many pennies as it can" going on to remark that it is not something he would ever care to reprint "so there is no need of copyrighting it in America. If anyone wants to sing it take care that the proceeds go to our men" Victoria and Albert Museum. The song was an enormous hit and though the exact amount raised is unknown it certainly succeeded in catching a lot of pennies. Enoch & Sons / The Daily Mail unknown‎

Composer's name stamp and "file copy" stamp on the front cover outer bifolium separating a bit at both ends of the fold light edgewear and toning a very good and complete copy. For voice and piano. The following note is printed above the music "The blossoms of the Australian Wattle Tree a species of Acacia emit a remarkably fragrant perfume more particularly after rain: the sudden recognition of this scent on an occasion during the Transvaal campaign awakens thoughts of 'Home sweet home' in the breast of an Australian Trooper." Gerard F. Cobb is primarily remembered for his musical settings to Kipling's words this perhaps being his last such composition as he passed away in March of the year it was published. This song is unrecorded by OCLC and appears equally scarce in the trade; in fact the only references we can find to the piece online are are The Kipling Society citing a record of it in Rudyard Kipling A Bibliographical Catalogue by James McGregor Stewart and a 2005 recording released by ABC Records-Australia on an album titled When the Empire Calls. ‎KIPLING, Rudyard, words by, and Arthur Sullivan, music by‎

‎Sheet music: The Absent Minded Beggar No. 2 in D‎

‎New York: Boosey & Co 1899. Softcover. Fair. Later printing possibly the first American edition. Folio. Two nested bifolia with a single sheet insert making ten pages. Outer bifolium separated along the fold but both leaves are present inner bifolium nearly separated edgewear owner name on the front cover and toning and soiling to the exterior a complete but fair only copy. Plate imprint "E. 7 - 7." This song was originally published in London in 1899 by The Daily Mail to raise money for soldiers and their families during the Second Boer War. The original front cover printed the statement "For every copy sold of this song one shilling goes to The Daily Mail fund for the relief of the sufferers by the war." This charitable effort was reportedly the first of its kind. The song was an enormous hit and though the exact amount raised is unknown it certainly succeeded in catching a lot of pennies; what is not certain is whether or not Boosey & Co. took care to contribute part of their proceeds from this American publication as nothing is printed indicating that they did. An interesting reprint that appears to be a bit more uncommon than the original. Boosey & Co unknown‎
