La mia vita
br. Si narra che Oskar Kokoschka, in preda alla disperazione per esser stato abbandonato da Alma, si fosse fatto costruire una bambola con le sue sembianze, a mo' di feticcio. Ma non fu l'unico a perderci la testa. Gustav Mahler, il primo marito, nutrì per lei un amore ossessivo, inquieto, tormentato dal bisogno di possesso e dalla gelosia. Alma fu l'amante di Gustav Klimt, Kokoschka, Alexander von Zemlinsky e altri, e dopo la morte di Mahler ebbe altre due nozze: con Gropius prima, e in seguito con lo scrittore austriaco Franz Werfel. Infedele, impietosa, arrogante, dotata di un'intelligenza avventurosa, crudele, a volte, con chi l'amava, e insofferente verso ogni debolezza, intrisa di quel pensiero nietzschiano che le fa pronunciare frasi come "colui che ha bisogno di aiuto non merita di riceverne", la vita della donna che stregò gli intelletti più in vista del suo tempo fu anche travagliata e sofferta, come il suo talento, che sentiva di avere ma faticava a esprimere. Questo libro, a metà tra autobiografia e affresco culturale, raccoglie i ricordi di vita, le passioni, le ragioni, i tumulti di un'esistenza che ha intrecciato il suo destino a quello dell'arte del primo Novecento europeo, la testimonianza in prima persona della più bella e indomita ragazza di Vienna.

In questa corrispondenza, che si estende dagli anni dell'apprendistato fino al grande successo americano della Metropolitan Opera House, si sente vibrare la voce di Mahler: velata di timidezza ma pregna del più sincero entusiasmo nei primi anni di carriera, quando ventenne si presenta al mondo della musica, si fa di lettera in lettera sempre più sicura nel gestire i continui problemi e imprevisti che un affermato direttore d'orchestra deve affrontare: dalla scelta dei cantanti ai rapporti con i colleghi, dalla richiesta di consigli e informazioni alle relazioni con istituzioni, giornalisti e mecenati. Accompagnate da un rigoroso apparato critico che restituisce il substrato di uno dei periodi più fecondi della storia della musica, queste lettere avvincono per la forza con cui da ogni riga traspaiono, inconfondibili, il garbo dell'intellettuale, la passione del direttore d'orchestra, l'intraprendenza del direttore di teatro e soprattutto la grandezza poliedrica del compositore, che nemmeno di fronte alle pur pressanti esigenze economiche impostegli dal suo ruolo viene meno alla fedeltà all'arte e al genio dell'ispirazione che sempre lo contraddistinse.
