Engraved title pages three engraved vignettes and three engraved plates after Moreau le jeune. Cohen-de Ricci p. 604. Lightly washed and pressed in keeping with bibliophilic fashion at the time of binding one title page with small corner tear otherwise A FINE SET clean and still crisp internally with ample margins and the scarcely-worn bindings quite lustrous.<br/> <br/> This is a finely bound copy of singer and playwright Pierre Laujon's songs "About Society" and "About Folly" with illustrations of "ravishing grace" that Cohen-de Ricci considers among the best efforts of Jean Michel Moreau. Laujon 1727-1811 wrote and performed in musical reviews and ballets where his efforts attracted the attention of the Count of Clermont and the Prince de Condé who hired him to direct their festivals and pageants. The songs here were composed for these "society festivals" gently mocking the frivolous naughty behavior of the elite. The accompanying illustrations showing beautifully dressed courtiers and bon-vivants are the work of Moreau le jeune 1741-1814 deemed by no less than Gordon Ray to be "the greatest name among French illustrators of the 18th century." The graceful bindings here were done by one of the great bookbinding houses of France. After apprenticing in the provinces Antoine Joly 1838-1917 moved to Paris found employment with the celebrated Léon Gruel later formed a partnership with Thibaron in 1874 succeeded him 11 years later and in 1892 turned the business over to his son Robert 1870-1924 who signed his work "Joly fils." According to Duncan & DeBartha "An excellent gilder like his father Robert designed and produced a range of classical covers." An archive of material related to Bay Area Gay Liberation a short-lived far-left political action group including various flyers bulletins press releases correspondence and assorted ephemera most notably related to its support of the 1975 United Farmworkers march on the Gallo Wine headquarters. Two manilla folders with typed labels housing various loose stapled and paperclipped sheets of various size and color. Overall near fine with scattered nicks and tears old folds from being mailed and occasional oxidized staples or paperclips. <br /> <br /> The papers come from the personal files of Michael B. Music a politically active gay man who worked as an office manager and organizer for BAGL’s cofounder Howard Wallace while employed at the San Francisco Neighborhood Legal Assistance Foundation which is printed on one of the folders. While BAGL's agenda of inclusion and rights for all eventually succumb to the stronger pull of the blossoming San Francisco gay rights movement it left an impressive wake in its year of existence.<br /> <br /> The material found here includes several of the founding documents such as a handwritten "statement of purpose" calls to action sign-up forms and flyers soliciting membership; the first four issues all of the BAGL Bulletin; a group of documents related to the BAGL Evaluation Workshop; and flyers concerned with police harassment food stamps potluck dinner gay bar bill of rights and Chilean Resistance solidarity to name a few. These are accompanied by various notes in Music’s own hand concerning all matters of the organization's business with mentions of Harvey Milk Jose Sarria and Wallace.<br /> <br /> A sizable portion of the BAGL archive deals with the controversial move to support the UFW's march on Gallo as representatives of the Gay Liberation Movement. Included are notes lists and letters wherein Music questions why they should or should not support the UFW handbills calling for support of the march and rallies in support of the UFW efforts checklists of health and safety concerns during the march copies of a letter he sent to Cesar Chavez requesting a meeting in hopes of a formal statement of support for the Gay community and a three-page carbon of a report from a BAGL member describing her experience during the Gallo march and the UFW's response to requests for recognition and support.<br /> <br /> An enlightening archive of material from a little known but vocal and active segment of the gay community that helps to shed light on its place in the evolution of the Gay Rights struggle. hardcover

There is slight wear to the corners and head & tail of the spine. 24 pages plus a folding leaf of engraved music for the tune "Jerusalem the Golden" by Alexander Ewing. The text block is intact though detached from the covers. There is some occasional soiling and minor foxing with minor creases to page corners. Good. <p>First American edition.<p>RARE. There are no copies of this edition in WorldCat. There is a later 1867 edition published by Durand at Harvard.<p>Alexander Ewing 1830-1895 first composed the tune for John Mason Neale's hymn "For Thee O Dear Dear Country" which was performed by the Aberdeen Harmonic Choir. Published as a leaflet in 1853 the music saw subsequent printings until it came to appear in 1861 as the tune to Neale's "Jerusalem the Golden". Neale's hymn the opening lines of which read "Jerusalem the golden / With milk and honey blest / Beneath thy contemplation / Sink heart and voice oppressed." appears here as the last of several hymns which Neale translated and revised. "The Celestial Country" is from Neale's translation of Bernard of Cluny's Latin verse satire "De Contemptu Mundi" and Neale's verses are here preceded by a brief preface by S. Barnabas. Australia 1908. 1908. Fair. - A 9-3/4 inch high by 8 inch wide broadside with text printed within a formal and floral decorated gilt and blue roulette frame. "This First-class Band have just returned from an extended tour of the world as far as Brungle where they performed before His Majesty King Bill and an immense audience of gins and picaninnies. So pleased was His Royal Highness with the programme that he presented the Conductor with the Order of the Nulla-Nulla." Further "The Giant Drum Major 10ft. by 9-1/2in. will lead the Band. The World Famed Clan of Lesbobster Pipers The Reel o' Thompson-street by the clever family of McPhee Dancers." Furthermore the performance will include the "Wonderful Cornice Player Tammie Nicholson" who is also here listed as the business manager at the bottom. If the text is not playful enough the "Important Notice" at bottom implores that "Small boys and big girls are requested not to interfere with kilts of bandsmen." Creased along the edges and corners with some minor soiling. There are pieces out from the bottom edge as well as lower right edge which though not affecting the text has resulted in some loss to the decorated borders. Short tears to the edges have been reinforced with clear archival document tape from the verso. <p>Located in New South Wales Australia the town of Cootamundra is in the South West Slopes region within the Riverina. Brungle mentioned in the text as the location where a performance took place before King Bill is a village located in the central east part of the Riverina region. King Bill is here stated has having presented the conductor with the Order of the Nulla-Nulla. A Nulla Nulla is an Aboriginal Australian club used for hunting and fighting and also serves as a deadly hunting boomerang shaped like the number 7.<p>The program also lists the performance of a symphony by Herr Cyclone Gates titled "Ten Miles from Gundagai". The small town of Gundagai in New South Wales Australia is popular with writers as representing a typical Australian country town.<p>RARE. [Australia], 1908. unknown

RARE.</p><p>The Russian-born American experimental composer & pianist Leo Ornstein 1895-2002 was known for his performances of works by avant-garde composers as well as his own often shocking innovative compositions for the piano. He was the first of his stature to make use of tone clusters. Despite his fame as a pianist Ornstein walked away from performing in the mid-1920's devoting his time to composing works. Good. - A 9-1/2 inch high by 6-1/2 inch wide broadside song sheet with the lyrics of the minstrel song "The Gal in Blue!" centered beneath the bold title within a formal decorated frame. The lyrics of the three stanzas and chorus written in dialect begin "I met a pretty yaller gall her name I do not know / I meet her every evening no matter where I go / She swings de fancy handkerchief that sparkes like the dew / You'd know her if you seen her she's always dressed in blue." To which the chorus responds "She'll set dis darkey crazy I don't know what to do / If I can't get dat pretty gal dat I saw dressed in blue. / She'll set dis darkey crazy I don't know what to do / If I don't get dat pretty gal dat I saw dressed in blue." The publisher's credits are centered below the lyrics. The song sheet is toned with some heavy dampstaining. Good. <p>The song sheet is "Published by permission of John H. Duley of Perham's Opera Troupe". Perham is possibly the same person as Josiah Perham of the "Ethiopian Troupe and Great Burlesque Company" a blackface troupe. (mm. 165x95), 2 opere in 1 volume, p. pelle bazana coeva, dorso a cordoni con decoraz. e titolo oro, tagli marmorizzati, pp. XXXII,195, al frontespizio stemma con simboli massonici (segue) “Chansons de la très-vénérable Confrairie des Francs-Maçons”, précédées de quelques pièces de Poésie, pp. 31. L’opera è molto ben illustrata f.t. (come da Indice) da 9 tavole inc. in rame, di cui 5 ripieg., e da 5 tavole di musica notata. Vi sono raffigurate sia scene di riunioni massoniche, con uomini e donne in costume d'epoca, sia le piante delle logge, le disposizioni previste per determinati riti, le decodificazioni dei cifrari massonici, le rappresentazioni degli oggetti e dei simboli dell'ordine. L'opera contiene "Le secret des Francs/Maçons - Supplément (Réception du Maitre, catéchisme, serment, le chiffre des Francs-Maçons, signes, attouchements, remarques sur divers usages de la Maçonnerie) - Le secret des Mopses révélé (introdotto dalla pagina di titolo con xilografato un cane, emblema dell'Ordine). Cfr. Caillet,III,8506 che cita varie ediz. a partire dalla prima del 1745: "Ce livre n'a d'antimaçonnique que le titre, mais est en réalité un écrit de propaganda maçonnique du XVIII siècle.. L'auteur Perau est l'abbé Gabriel Louis Calabre, littérateur (Paris 1700-67), prieur de Sorbonne sans avoir été ordonné pretre" - Benimeli “Bibl. de la Masoneria”, p. 38 e 165: autore è l'abate Larudan. Esemplare ben conservato.
