Schönes Exemplar des unter Kurfürst Johann Georg II. von Sachsen aufgelegten Gesangbuchs, darin als erster Teil die insgesamt vierte Auflage von Heinrich Schütz' Psalter. Die drei Teile mit eigenen Zwischentiteln (wo auch Druckort und Drucker genannt werden): "Der Psalter Davids, nach bekannten Kirchen-Melodeien. Durch D. Cornelium Beckern verfasset, aufs neue aber, mit Heinrich Schützens [...] eigenen Gesang-Weisen, aufgeleget", "Neu-eingerichtetes Gesang-Buch Herrn D. Martini Lutheri", und - mit selbständiger Paginierung - das "Kirchen-Gebeth-Buch". Die erste und zweite Auflage von Schützens Psalter (SWV 97a-256a) waren 1628 und 1640 erschienen, die dritte erweiterte Auflage (SWV 97-256) erschien 1661. Schütz, der bedeutendste deutsche Komponist des Frühbarock, führte den neuen konzertierenden Stil mit obligatem Generalbass aus Italien ein und vereinigte ihn höchst wirkungsvoll mit der deutschen Bibelprosa. - Der Gesamttitel hinter die Widmung gebunden. Der prachtvolle doppelblattgroße Kupferstich "Schütz in der alten Dresdner Schloßkirche im Kreise seiner Kantorei" (Abb. bei H. J. Moser, Heinrich Schütz, 2. Ellenville New York: July 18 1957. 1957. Very good. - A powerful 14 inch high by 11 inch wide photograph by Emmerich Gara depicting the great conductor Leopold Stokowski standing tall at the podium. Attired in a tuxedo the conductor depicted in profile at the left edge of the image looks down & out at his orchestra. His right hand is raised as he seduces music from the orchestra. Photographed by Cellist Emmerich Gara with his name & address stamped on the verso of the photograph. Signed by Gara in pencil on the verso. Fine. <p>Leopold Stokowski conducted his Symphony of the Air orchestra at the Empire State Music Festival in Ellenville NY on July 18th 1957. The concert featured a performance of Igor Stravinsky's controversial "Canticum Sacrum ad Honorem Sancti Marci Nominis" with was composed but two years before. The American premiere took place in Los Angeles on June 17 1957 and was conducted by Robert Craft. This performance was the East Coast premiere. The concert concluded with a performance of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana".<p>Emmerich Gara b.1901 d.1963. Born in Vienna Austria in 1901 Gara established lifelong careers as a portrait photographer and professional cellist. Before the outbreak of the Second World War he and his wife emigrated to the United States where he was hired as cellist for the NBC Orchestra led by Arturo Toscanini. He performed with the orchestra later called The Symphony of the Air until his death.<p>From his seat in the front row of the orchestra Gara was in the unique position to photograph all the great conductors and soloists who appeared with the orchestra during this extraordinary period of musical activity. His subjects were captured in performance rehearsal and in candid moments during recordings and while socializing.<p>Gara's action portraits were used for record covers for the Book of the Month Club and in articles in Time Life and other major magazines around the world. Folio. 4pp. Illustrated wrappers. External tape repair along the spine center leaves detached but present soiling and a dampstain to the rear wrapper not affecting the interior content still very good. The illustration depicts Eva and Tom reading the Bible in the arbor an image that captivated the public at the time spawning many commercial print reproductions as well as actors staging the scene for the production of photo cards. Jo-Ann Morgan of the Department of African American Studies at Western Illinois University writes "Among those initial six engravings Little Eva reading the Bible to Uncle Tom in the arbor was according to Billings' biographer James F. O'Gorman 'without doubt the most important image of the first edition.' Unlike the slave Madonna or praying supplicant there was no visual precedent for a grown black man in the prime of life cozied up with a tiny white girl alone out in nature. John P. For voice and piano. OCLC speculates that the Eliza credited with writing this song is the English poet Eliza Cook. The song's subject is the death of Little Eva from Uncle Tom's Cabin. The song's concluding line is "He may catch of the world without sorrow or sin / A glimpse of the glory as Eva goes in" meaning into the gates of Heaven. E.H. Wade unknown

Good with some staining and loss to spine crease on cover mended on the verso with old tape; it has not stained the page light wear and soil some wear to title page and to table of contents page soil but generally very good and clean inside. RARE with only one copy cited by OCLC at Brown University. Unusually the cover artist misspelled 'motto' as 'mottoe' -- see one of the pics for a shot of the table of contents. Richard A. The binding is lightly bumped. 28 pages including profuse music staves plus 3-page publisher's catalog & ads. There is a short tear to the front edge of 1 page. The page corners are bumped & there is occasional light foxing. Overall a very good attractive copy. <p>The Italian text of "Ernani" by Francesco Maria Piave is based on the drama "Hernani" by Victor Hugo. It is here printed with an English translation. Though a title in Ditson's "Standard Opera Libretto" series there is printed music on part of 17 pages. The handsome engraved ad on the rear wrap depicts Oliver Ditson & Co.'s building in Boston. Fine. - A dynamic 11 inch high by 14 inch wide black & white matte finish photograph by Emmerich Gara depicting the great Brazilian classical composer Villa-Lobos standing at a podium under the walls of a white tent. Attired in white shirt and tie Villa-Lobos' baton is a blur as fiercely looks left towards the unseen orchestra his empty fist emphasizing the point. Photographed by Cellist Emmerich Gara with his name & address stamped on the verso. The photograph is signed by Gara in pencil on the verso and also dated and identified in pencil. Fine. <p>Emmerich Gara b.1901 d.1963. Born in Vienna Austria in 1901 Gara established lifelong careers as a portrait photographer and professional cellist. Before the outbreak of the Second World War he and his wife emigrated to the United States where he was hired as cellist for the NBC Orchestra led by Arturo Toscanini. He performed with the orchestra later called The Symphony of the Air until his death.<p>From his seat in the front row of the orchestra Gara was in the unique position to photograph all the great conductors and soloists who appeared with the orchestra during this extraordinary period of musical activity. His subjects were captured in performance rehearsal and in candid moments during recordings and while socializing.<p>Gara's action portraits were used for record covers for the Book of the Month Club and in articles in Time Life and other major magazines around the world. 12 SS. Buntpapier-Heftstreifen der Zeit. 8vo. Sonderdruck der Szene, in der der "Bettelstudent" in Weidmanns gleichnamigem Theaterstück (1783) auftritt. Die Szene machte in der Inszenierung von 1795 (mit Friedrich Baumann in der Titelrolle) auf das Wiener Publikum einen derartigen Eindruck, daß sich der Autor zu einer Separatedition veranlaßt sah. - Durchgehend stockfleckig.
