Chromolithographed throughout (some raised in gold). Brown morocco portfolio with inlayed arms of the Emperor of Brazil (in green and red calf with brass applications) and imperial crown above the arms in engraved brass with calf inlays in various colors. Spine in six compartments bordered in gold; wide giltstamped cover borders and simple fillets. All edges gilt. Blue silk endpapers and gilt ornamental inner dentelle (signed: "Rosenberg, Graben 17, Wien"). Splendid work dedicated to Emperor Franz Josef, with illustrations by Franz Alt, P. J. N. Geiger, and others. A very few of the small number of copies printed were presented as personal gifts of the Emperor to the highest dignitaries, for whom the Viennese bookbinder Franz Felix Rosenberg manufactured elaborate, customized bindings with the insignia of the recipients. - Very rare: international library catalogs list only a single copy of the normal edition (BSB Munich). One of Rosenberg's splendidly bound special editions appeared in the trade recently (the copy intended for Pope Pius IX). - Interior slightly foxed, as usual; spine-ends insignificantly rubbed, otherwise perfect. Stotz hatte "sich einer Schauspieltruppe angeschlossen, mit der er [um 1800] nach Eisenstadt kam. The work mentioned was published to two volumes in 1827 with the extra imput of Richard Hebber.

San Francisco 1864. Broadside measuring 12 x 8.5. Some wear and archival tape repair to margin fine contrast excellent condition overall. Very Good. An interesting broadside advertising the Lighte and Bradbuiry piano as well as Martin Guitars printed for the Salvator Rosa music store at 615 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. Lighte and Bradbury was in its third iteration in the period from 1858-1864 when this broadside was printed having been started by the German immigrant Ferdinand C. Leuchte in 1847 who did business with a range of partners after anglicizing his name to Lighte. Among the testimonials listed on the broadside is praise from Lowell Mason the composer and music director. Salvator Rosa’s store was around from at least 1852 when a fire in the city destroyed the building on Clay St. making this location at 615 Montgomery Street at least the second for the firm. The firm published sheet music including “Fireman’s March†and “Garibaldi’s Hymn.†Martin Guitars had been based in Nazareth Pennsylvania since 1838 and were a relatively small company at this point before the growth of popularity of guitars and the shift to steel strings that happened in the early twentieth century. We find no other nineteenth century examples of broadside advertisements for Martin in trade records. unknown

Prohibition-Era Photograph Album of Eddie Jones a Touring Banjo Player and Lover of Life in 1920s Southern California
Southern California 1920. Limp leatherette album oblong 4to measuring 10 x 7 inches with seventy photographs most measuring 4 x 2 ½ inches. Wear to binding photographs with excellent contrast very good to near fine overall. Near Fine. An energetic album of photographs belonging to one Eddie Jones a fun-loving banjo player from Santa Ana mostly composed of photographs of musicians performing at small parties and functions during the prohibition era. Jones was apparently quite active on the local scene and the album is mostly made up of candid photographs of musicians all captioned some humorously. Many of the photographs show small bands playing guitars many of them playing with slides likely due to the popularity of Hawaiian music at the time. Also included are many photographs of parades in and around Los Angeles as well as photographs of the 1925 Santa Barbara Earthquake showing damaged buildings. Two photographs feature a glass of rye others show agricultural scenes. Newspaper clippings in the back center on the Santa Ana and it’s possible that Jones - who was the common name mentioned in these clippings - was also a farmer from the Santa Ana area when he wasn’t playing music. One photograph shows San Diego a couple show a bullfight in Tijuana. Overall an evocative and well preserved piece of California Prohibition-era history. unknown

Housed in an early 20th century red morocco-backed red cloth slipcase with red cloth chemise with handsome bookplate. Some mild wear to the slipcase; near fine. Per the Preface: "The author of the words Carroll has been good enough to add to one of the Poems so that if on no other ground this publication will be valuable inasmuch as it has furnished the charming absurdity about'the Duck and the Dodo The Lizard and the Cat a-swimming in milk round the brim of a Hat."<br /> <br /> Williams and Madan note multiple colors of the wrappers and different placements or arrangements of the advertisements with no established priority. The printed cover text in our copy while appearing black to the naked eye is actually mixed with gilt which can be seen in good light particularly with the help of a loupe.<br /> <br /> Rare in commerce with just a handful of auction appearances since the early 20th century. The Calvert Lithograph Company was founded in 1863 by Thomas Calvert and by the 1870s had become one of the largest lithographers in the U.S. and later by the 1890s employing over 300 employees. New York: Wm. A. Pond & Co 1865. Folio sheet music lithographed pictorial cover. 6 pp. including cover. 9.5 x 12.25 inches. Typical light age toning and minor edge wear; very good example with strong impression remnants of string at spine removed from a larger volume. A vivid piece of end-of-war political satire commemorating the capture of Confederate president Jefferson Davis whose attempted escape in May 1865 quickly became the subject of popular ridicule in Northern newspapers and song sheets. The cover lithograph depicts Davis fleeing through a wooded encampment while dressed in women’s clothing a reference to widely circulated reports that he attempted to evade Union troops by donning a shawl or petticoats; in truth he had borrowed a shawl from his wife. Behind him a Union soldier points in recognition while onlookers react with amusement. The music was written by Henry Tucker a prolific mid-nineteenth-century songwriter known for sentimental and topical pieces with lyrics by George Cooper one of the most active American lyricists of the period and collaborator with composers such as Stephen Foster and J. R. Thomas. Together they produced a number of patriotic and topical songs during the Civil War years. The myth of Davis in women’s clothing was represented a few different ways though this large lithographic illustration done by Henry C. Eno is possibly the most iconic. Wm. A. Pond & Co unknown
