Titelschmuckmotiv einer Laute, die drei späteren Programme mit aufwendiger Schmuckbordüre und Kopfillustration. "Jubelfeier zur Erinnerung an die Eröffnung des Concertsaales im Gewandhause zu Leipzig am 25. November 1781" (25. XI. 1881) und "Erstes / Zweites / Drittes Fest-Concert zur Einweihung des Neuen Gewandhauses zu Leipzig" (11. XII., 12. XII. und 13. XII. 1884). - Im ursprünglichen, ersten Gewandhaus in der Kupfergasse der Leipziger Altstadt wurde das hier dokumentierte hundertjährige Bestehen desselben gefeiert und das Gebäude noch bis etwa 1886 gelegentlich für Konzerte genutzt. 1882 begann der Bau am zweiten, hier "neuen", Gewandhaus (auch "Neues Conzerthaus" genannt) im Musikviertel südwestlich der Altstadt nach Plänen von Martin Gropius, der die Fertigstellung durch Heino Schmieden nicht mehr erlebte. Dem Eröffnungskonzert in dem neuen, für seine Akustik weithin berühmten Konzerthaus wohnten König Albert von Sachsen und Königin Carola bei (E. Kneschke, Die hundertundfünfzigjährige Geschichte der Leipziger Gewandhaus-Concerte 1743-1893 [1893], S. 150). Die Sängerin Hermine Spiess war am zweiten und der Violinist Joseph Joachim beim dritten Einweihungskonzert des neuen Gewandhauses zu hören. Joachim war ebenfalls bei der Feier des hundertjährigen Jubiläums aufgetreten. - Teilweise mit kleinen Randein- und Randausrissen, teilweise leicht gebräunt.

Letters by Jean-Paul Barbier, Vincent Capoul, Joseph Dupont, Charles Grandmougin, Ernest Guiraud, Jean Lasalle, Raoul Pugno, Jean-Alexandre Talazac and one unidentified correspondent. - Two of the letters revolve around Godard's greatest success, the opera "Jocelyn", which premiered in Bruxelles on 25 February 1888. In the earlier letter the famous playwright and librettist Jean-Paul Barbier asks for permission to include some pieces by Jocelyn in a concert: "Je voulais vous demander s'il serait possible de faire exécuter le 9 Mai, à notre Soirée d'Henri IV [...] quelques morceaux de Jocelyn? J'ai été plusieurs fois président de l'association, je fais encore partie du comité, et je serais heureux de donner à nos quinze cents invités un régal de cette valeur! [...]" (Paris, 9 March 1888). - In the second letter, the composer and music teacher Ernest Guiraud takes Godard up on the promise of a ticket for a performance of Jocelyn at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris: "Je vous rappelle l'aimable promesse que vous m'avez faite de me donner demain jeudi une place pour Jocelyn. So vous voulez bien, pour ne pas trop vous déranger, la laisser à mon nom chez le concierge du théâtre [...]" (Paris, 17 Oct. 1888). - Godard's librettist for Jocelyn, the famous tenor Victor Capoul, who sang the leading role in the Paris production, is also among the correspondents. He invites Godard to a salon with a reading of Józef Antoni Poniatowksi's "Pierre de Medicis", here wrongly titled "Marie de Medicis": "Je suis arrivé hier soir. Aujourd'hui j'au rencontré au Salon [...] - Voulez vous être de cette petite fête - après le Café je les lirai Marie de Medicis opera lyrique en 4 acts et sept tableaux!!!! [...]". - The famous tenor Jean-Alexandre Talazac presents his excuses for not being able to join a soirée with the mezzo-soprano Pauline Viardot because of the imminent premiere of Édoard Lalo's "Le roi d'Ys" with Talazac in the role of Mylo: "Je n'ai pu répondre plus tôt à votre lettre du 14 cour.t à cause du Roi d'Ys dont la première représentation aura sans doute lieu du 1er au 5 Mai. Je ne puis donc vous assurer mon concours pour la Soirée du 3 Mai chez Madame Viardot et vous prie d'agréer encore avec tous mes regrets l'expression de mes sentiments bien devoués [...]" (n. p., Dimanche, 22 Avril [1888]). The successful premiere of "Le roi d'Ys" took place on 7 May. Talazac's most important role was Samson in Saint-Saëns "Samson et Delila", which he sang both in the French premiere on 3 March 1890 in Rouen and in the first production in Paris later that year. - In an undated letter, the poet and librettist Charles Grandmougin (1850-1930) invites Godard to join the jury of a music competition: "La société franc-comtoise les Gaudes me charge de vous demander d'être juré pour juger au petit concours musical fait par un de nos poètes. Je crois qu'il y a 12 mélodies environ à juger. Puis je répondre oui? [...]" (n. p. o. d.). - Godard's own letter is the latest dated object in the collection, inviting a young singer to a rehearsal: "Mademoiselle, si vous voulez bien me faire l'honeur de venir chez moi, 6, Bd. de Clichy, mercredi prochain, 1er Avril, à 11 h du matin, je serai charmé de vous recevoir et de vous entendre [...]" (n. p., 28 March 1891). - Varying conditions. Several letters with some foxing and minor tears. Godard's and Guiraud's letters show more substantial tears in the folds. No text loss overall.

Stotz hatte "sich einer Schauspieltruppe angeschlossen, mit der er [um 1800] nach Eisenstadt kam. Hier wollte er ein Kindertheater errichten, verlegte sich dann aber doch wieder auf das Handwerk und führte stolz den Titel Hochfürstlicher Esterhazyscher Hofbuchdrucker [...] Er hat viele formatgleiche taschenbuchartige Textbücher in einfacher Frakturtype zu den im Hoftheater gespielten Dramen und Opern gedruckt" (Durstmüller I, 299). - Am Titel verwischter ungarischer Sammlungsstempel sowie Stempelung "DV 2000".

The covers are quite rubbed & bumped with creasing to the bottom corners of the boards. 110 & 2 pages illustrated with a folding double-sided frontispiece and textual musical notations. Good.</p><p>First edition.</p><p>Born in New Zealand to Scottish parents the Scottish musician and author William Crawford Honeyman 1845-1919 returned to Britain as a child. A violinist and orchestra leader he published violin instructional books anonymously and under his own name. However he was better known under his pseudonym James McGovan James M'Govan as the author of police detective novels and is believed to have influenced Arthur Conan Doyle to publish his first Sherlock Holmes story.</p> Boston: Jean White, (1883). hardcover

3 theatre bills. Folio (c. 220 x 355 mm). Announcing the performances of "Don Ranudo de Colibrados" and Kotzebue's "Der arme Poet" on Dec. 27, as well as the "Lästerschule" on Dec. 28. 12. (Iffland playing Don Ranudo, Lorenz Kindlein, and the Baron); Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice" on Dec. 29 (Iffland in the role of Shylock); and, finally, of Goldoni's "Der gutherzige Polterer" (Iffland's translation, with him playing Morhof) and Kotzebues "Der häusliche Zwist" (Dec. 30). - Iffland, who had created a sensation in 1782 as the first "Moor" in Schiller's "Die Räuber", gave his final performance in Weimar in the last days of December 1812. Goethe, who had previously succeeded in bringing the actor to Weimar in 1796, attended all performances and was Iffland's host on Dec. 28. A few days before Iffland's arrival, Goethe had written to Zelter: "It is probably one of the rarest of phenomena, and one, I think, that has never occurred with any other nation, that the greatest actor should generally select for himself parts, which are intrinsically unworthy of him, though, by his acting, he knows how to invest them with the highest momentary value" (12 Dec.) A few weeks after his departure, Goethe wrote: "Iffland's presence was a great delight to me. I gave myself up to the pure enjoyment of his talent, endeavoured to understand everything as he gave it, and did not trouble myself about what he gave [...] Thus I have greatly admired Iffland's way of throwing life into dead plays, - nay, his creation out of nothing [...] In addition, I thought it remarkable, that Iffland, who, in his written plays, aims at the most ample breadth, in his acting, conjures up again the conciseness and terseness of plays that are extemporized. How different our stage would seem, if he had not been forced to take this roundabout way [...]" (15 Jan. 1813). - Somewhat brownstained and wrinkled; slight edge defects; traces of folds and sewing. Numbered at the upper edge by a contemp. hand: "21"; "33"; "37".

13 (statt 20) Hefte in einem Band. Mit zusammen 12 gest. Orig.-Lieferungstiteln (davon 11 aufgezogen zwischengebunden), 78 (von 120) radierten Tafeln von Wilhelm u. Moritz Henschel und 2 SS. Subskriptionsanzeige. Etwas späterer Pappband mit intarsierter Originalbroschur unter Verwendung eines der Lieferungstitel. Gr.-4to. Erste Ausgabe der in 20 Einzelheften erschienenenen Darstellungen nach Aufführungsskizzen. Iffland selbst ist u. a. dargestellt als König Lear und Shylock, der Geizige im Stück gleichen Titels von Molière sowie als Nathan der Weise. So umfangreich wie vorliegend von größter Seltenheit. Heft 14 u. 16 in sich verbunden, aber komplett. Es fehlen das erste sowie die letzten beiden Hefte, außerdem die Hefte 5, 6, 11 und 15. - Auf dt. Auktionen außer einem einzigen kompletten Exemplar (Bassenge 1990) seit 1950 nur ein Einzelheft der Serie nachweisbar (Dörling 84, 24. XI. 1975, Nr. 792 [Heft 19 mit 6 Kupfern, DM 240]). Auch im Rahmen der gleichnamigen Ausstellung der Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin, die ausschließlich dem vorliegenden Werk (4. II.-26. III. 2005) gewidmet war, konnte nur ein gerade erst im Jahr davor erworbenes, unvollständiges Exemplar präsentiert werden. In den Rändern teils etwas finger- bzw. stockfleckig, im ganzen aber sehr ansprechendes Exemplar. Die Darstellung des "Hettmann im Schauspiel Graf Benjowsky" hübsch zeitgenössisch koloriert. Slg. With engraved title-page (using an original wrapper cover) and altogether 114 (instead of 120) etched plates by Wilhelm and Moritz Henschel and 2 pp. of subscription ads. Contemporary boards with ms label to spine. First edition of this series of performance sketches, published in 20 separate issues. Iffland himself is depicted in the roles of King Lear and Shylock, of the Miser in Molière's eponymous play, and of Nathan the Wise. Extremely rarely encountered thus near completeness, lacking only the final issue ("Der arme Poet"). German auction records since 1950 list a single complete copy (Bassenge 1990) and one separate issue only (Dörling 84, 24 Nov. 1975, no. 792 [issue 19 with 6 plates, DM 240]). Even a dedicated exhibition held at the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin in 2005, which focused exclusively on the present work, was able to present only an incomplete copy acquired the previous year. - From the collection of the director and actor Franz Stoß (1909-95) with his bookplate on the front pastedown.
