Two folio sheet music pieces with hand-colored pictorial covers 13x10 and 14x11 inches. General age toning and scattered spotting one with a small tack hole at upper margin; good overall. A pair of Chicago-issued theatrical song sheets connected with Dion Boucicault’s popular Irish melodrama Arrah-na-Pogue first produced 1864 one of the most frequently staged Irish plays in America during the later nineteenth century. Boucicault incorporated his own version of the patriotic ballad “The Wearing of the Green†into the drama helping to popularize the song with theatre audiences in Britain and the United States. Each sheet bears a vivid hand-colored lithographic pictorial cover showing a performer in costume before a rustic Irish landscape. The first is “The Wearing of the Green As Sung by J. E. McDonough in ‘Arrah Na Pogue’†depicting McDonough full-length in stage dress with green scarf and hat ribbon. The second is “The Wearing of the Green As Sung by H. T. Glenney as ‘Shaun the Post’ in ‘Arrah Na Pogue’†likewise presenting the performer in costume; this example carries the imprint H. H. Hopkins at the upper right and retains a small tack hole at the top margin.<br /> <br /> “The Wearing of the Green†itself originated as a nationalist ballad associated with the Irish Rebellion of 1798 when supporters of the United Irishmen adopted the color green as a symbol of resistance to British rule. After the rebellion was suppressed wearing green clothing or shamrocks could mark a person as a rebel sympathizer and lead to arrest. The song lamented these persecutions and circulated widely in printed broadsides and songsters. Boucicault’s theatrical adaptation for Arrah-na-Pogue became the best-known nineteenth-century version ensuring the song’s continued popularity on both the Irish and American stage. Chas. W. Javna was Cantor and Cantor Emeritus at Temple Israel of the City of New York. He worked at the La Puma Opera Company as lead vocalist in many productions. Stammbuch ihres Sohnes Kurt mit Eintragungen von u. a. Enrico Caruso, Egon Friedell, Katharine Hepburn, Erich Kästner, Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier und Felix Salten. Verschiedene Orte, 1919-1956.
Mit 38 meist einmontierten Unterschriften auf 24 Bll. (im Album) sowie auf 5 losen Blatt (Beilagen 1 bis 5). Lederband der Zeit. Kl.-4to (ca. 130:120 mm). Mit weiteren Beilagen (s. u., 8 und 9). Das vorliegende Stammbuch stammt aus dem Besitz von Kurt (später Curt) Strand, geb. Stranksy, einem ehemaligen CEO der Hotelkette Hilton International, der es an seinem 13. Geburtstag (am 13. November 1933) in Wien geschenkt bekam und der in den darauffolgenden vier Jahren eifrig sammelte, so dass er im Winter 1937/38 schon Unterschriften von folgenden Musikern, Schauspielern, Sängern, Schriftstellern und Sportlern sein eigen nennen konnte: Ernst Baier, Enrico Caruso, Franz Theodor Csokor, Egon Friedell, Luise Helletsgruber, Franz Herterich, Erich Kästner, Angelo Kessissoglu, Jan Kiepura, Robert Kronfeld, Charles Kullmann, Karl Lustig-Prean, Lili Marberg, Todor Mazaroff, Lotte Medelsky, Lisa Minghetti, Alexander Moissi, Felix Salten, Karl Schäfer, Elisabeth Schumann, Richard Tauber, Fritz von Unruh und Philipp Zeska. - Dann jedoch emigrierte Kurt im Alter von 17 Jahren mit seiner Familie in die USA und ließ ebenso wie seine Mutter Ernestine eine ganze Welt hinter sich. In der neuen Welt kamen noch die Unterschriften von Katharine Hepburn, Halvdan Koht, Vivien Leigh, Henri-René Lenormand, Paul Manship, Haridas Thakordas Muzumdar, Jawaharlal Nehru, Laurence Olivier, Albert Sarraut, Robert E. Sherwood, Henry van de Velde, Wan Waithayakon und Wendell Wilkie hinzu, die er aber offensichtlich nicht mehr mit Absicht und Plan sammelte, sondern die der Tag ihm zutrug. - Curt Strands 1897 in Rosice (Mähren) geborene Mutter Ernestine war in den späten 1910er und frühen 1920er Jahren Schülerin der Kunstschule für Frauen und Mädchen in Wien gewesen und hatte u. a. mit Anton Hanak, Oskar Kokoschka und Egon Schiele Kontakt. In den USA war sie weiterhin künstlerisch tätig und schuf etwa die Portraits für Dorothy Fishers "American Portraits" (New York, Henry Holt & Co., 1946) sowie jeweils ein Portrait der US-Präsidenten Hoover, F. D. Roosevelt, Truman und Eisenhower; in den 1940er und 1950er Jahren beschickte sie mehrere Ausstellungen, darunter eine in der Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, und eine weitere in der New York Historical Society. - Die nicht im Album enthaltenen, sondern lose beiliegenden Autographen stammen von 1) F. T. Csokor (eh. Visitenkarte), 2-4) Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier und Robert E. Sherwood (auf einer gedr. Programmkarte des Londoner Churchill-Clubs), 5) Paul Manship (auf einem an ihn adress. Briefkuvert), 6-7) Jawaharlal Nehru und Wan Waithayakon (auf einer gedr. Menükarte anlässlich eines vom New Yorker Bürgermeister Robert F. Wagner im Dezember 1956 ausgerichteten Festessens für Nehru) und 8) Fritz von Unruh (eh. Postkarte an Berta Zuckerkandl). Weiters liegen bei 8) 5 eigenh. Briefe mit U. von Anton Hanak an Enit Kaufmann a. d. J. 1918 und 1919, in denen es meist um seine Arbeitsüberlastung und nötige Terminverschiebungen geht (jeweils 1 S. auf 1 Bl., 4to, mit 4 eh. adr. Kuverts) und schließlich 9) 2 idente Portraitpostkarten, die den jungen Curt Strand im Jahre 1939 am Beginn seiner Berufslaufbahn zeigen, über die es im Nachruf der "Aspen Times" vom 15. Juli 2020 würdigend hieß: "Under Mr. Strand's leadership, Hilton International grew from one hotel in 1949, to encompass more than 100 hotels in 60 countries with 35,000 employees, at his retirement in 1987. Subsequently, Mr. Strand became a senior consultant for American Express, SAS Hotels, Tishman-Speyer, Pierre Hotel and Sherry Netherlands Hotel in New York City. He lectured at Cornell University, Cornell Essec (France), New York University, Y.P.O. and University of Houston. A collection including: autograph visiting card signed by the French composer Hedwige Chrétien (1859-1944), with thanks for his artistic interpretation of her choral work "Nos Soldats"; and an ALS by Georges Razigade (1876-1947) about working on his "Cortège" and "Air ballet", looking forward to having it followed by his "Danse moldave", the orchestration for which he has arranged: "Je viens de travailler tout spécialement pour votre orchestre au Cortège et l'Air ballet. Comme vous me l'avez fait espèrer, je serai très heureux de l'entendre avec ma 'Danse Moldave', qui y fait suite; j'ai donc arrangé une orchestration spéciale pour que tout soit entendu [...]". - APcS by the Italian composer Adolfo Baci (1834-1918), about sending him a sonata. - ALS by the French pianist and composer Gabrielle Ferrari (1851-1921), who regrets not having seen Kerrion's sister, the singer Stéphanie Kerrion, prior to the departure of the same. - ALS by the countess Oblonska, recommending "Poéme d'Antar" by the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) to be performed at the Palais de l'Industrie. - ALS by a friend of Kerrion's engaged in Mainz, mentioning a large salary, being surrounded by artists, and playing all the operas by Wagner, Beethoven and Mozart as a plus, while also feeling tied down there, wishing Kerrion and their mutual friend, the Italian violinist and composer Francesco de Guarnieri (1867-1927), were there, hoping to visit them the following year: "Je suis très bon caré ici, je n'ai pas beaucoup de besogne et suis largement payé. Au surplus je suis entouré de vrais artistes. L'orchestre et les chefs sont très bons et on a des executions magnifiques. Nous jouons tous les Operas de Wagner ainsi que ceux de Beethoven et Mozart [...] Je suis enchainé ici probablement par toujours car il y a une retraite de gouvernement. Je crois bien cependant aller te voir l'année prochaine. Outer bifolium separated along the fold but both leaves are present edgewear including chip and tears a tear to the front cover with an early attempted repair done by sewing it with thread music shop stamp on the front cover and the text at the very top of the rear cover partially cut off a complete but good only copy. For voice and piano. Plate number 8489. The score does not credit the authors instead printing "The Words from 'Alton Locke'" and "The Music by The Composer of 'The Captive Knight.'" Copies of "The Captive Knight" credit the composer simply as the sister of the author who is typically credited as Mrs. Hemans; her full name is Felicia Hemans and she was a popular poet in her time. The composer of this piece Hemans' sister is Harriet Browne most of the music she wrote was set to her sister's poetry making this piece somewhat unique. OCLC locates only a single holding. Musikbildungsanstalt und Leiter des Orchestervereins in Mährisch-Ostrau nieder. Sich insbesondere als Opernkomponist einen Namen machend, schrieb er u. a. die romantische Oper ‘Der Bravo’, das musikalisch-dramatische Märchen ‘Die versunkene Stadt’ und das 1898 in München mit dem Luitpold-Preis ausgezeichnete Tonschauspiel ‘Der tolle Eberstein’ (vgl. Circa 1815. 12mo 8 pp. Fair on aged laid paper. On four leaves removed from a pocket book with two leaves numbered in manuscript '41' and '42'. Apparently a first-person draft of information for an appeal by the oldest surviving member from the inception of the group for a stipend. Begins 'Depuis le commencement de l'an 1760 que j'ai ete recu a la Musique du Roi j'ai été en exercice jusqu'en 1792 avec 222. sujets qui s'y sous <> dont 40 vivant encore au 18 Janvier 1815. .'. There follow a 'Liste des Morts' grouped under office or instrument and a one with dates of 'Musiciens du Roi vivante au 1er. Janvier 1815.' Also a list of 'Musiciens de la Chambre' dead since 1761. The numerical 'Resultas' are given with a short note in the first person on the exclusion from the list of the 'femmes du Cour de la Reine'. De Rohan's brief 'Apostile' approves the 'Doyen''s appeal 'a cause des services et de l'age'. One authority briefly explains the origins the Musique du Roi: 'Until 1761 the performance of sacred and secular music for the king were entrusted to separate bodies each part of the ecclesiastical and civil households. In 1761 both were merged and the position of grand-maître de la chapelle-musique was eliminated.'' [Circa 1815.] unknown

Zusammen 49 SS. 8vo. Gegenstand der ausführlichen Korrespondenz von zwei Advokaten und ihrer Klienten Eugenie Labatt und Heinrich Grünbaum sind Sorgerechtsfragen betr. der aus der deren Ehe entsprossenen Tochter Elly. Eigentlicher Zankapfel des Sorgerechtsfalles ist das Besuchsrecht der leiblichen Mutter Eugenie, die nunmehr in zweiter Ehe mit dem Tenorsänger an der Wr. Hofoper L. Labatt verheiratet ist und der eben dieser Eheschließung wegen das Besuchsrecht bis zum 10. bzw. 12 Lebensjahr der Tochter verwehrt werden soll. In einem Brief an den befreundeten Hausarzt Adolf Hoffmann vom 1. I. 1879 führt Grünbaum hierzu folgendes aus: "Nach dem zwischen mir und Jenny [d. i. Eugenie] bei Trauung unserer Ehe geschlossenen Vertrage bleibt unser Ellerl in meiner Gewalt und Erziehung. Der Erziehung dieses Geschöpfchens widme ich fortan mein Leben! - Wie soll aber dieses Erziehungswerk gelingen, wenn das Kind seiner Mutter begegnen, mit ihr (wenn auch noch so selten) verkehren soll, - und andrerseits der Grund des Fernbleibens dem Kinde unaufgeklärt bleibt, ja schließlich der Zufall ihr die Mama an der Seite ihres jetzigen Mannes zeigt? - All' die unberechenbaren Folgen einer Verwirrung der heiligen Begriffe von Mutter und Vater in dem kleinen Kinderköpfchen sehe ich drohen, wenn ich solche Begegnungen zwischen Mutter und Kind zugebe. "Der Künstler zählte während seiner hervorragenden Tätigkeit in Wien zu den beliebtesten Mitgliedern des Hofinstitutes" (Eisenberg, zitiert nach DBA I 729, 65). - Beiliegend eine hektographierte, nicht ausgefüllte aber von E. Labatt unterzeichnete Vollmacht für ihren Advokaten H. Jacques.
