Zusammen 220¾ SS. auf 129 Bll. Verschiedene Formate. Mit einigen Beilagen (s. u.). Inhaltsreiche Korrespondenz von u. a. Houston Stewart Chamberlain, Marcel Proust und Cosima Wagner mit dem katholischen Priester, Philosophen und Wagner-Forscher Marcel Hébert (1851-1916), die sich im Wesentlichen um die Themen Philosophie, Religion und Politik in Wagners Werk dreht, aber auch so manch anderes Thema anspricht, so etwa die Korrespondenz zwischen Wagners Assistenten Carl August Roeckel und Wagner (so Houston Stewart Chamberlain in seinem Brief vom 11. VIII. 1893), einen Besuch Chamberlains bei Cosima Wagner (Br. v. 5. I. 1894 und vom 15. III. desselben Jahres), Wagner und Hegel (16. V. 1894), den Plan einer Übersetzung von Héberts "Sentiment religieux dans l'œuvre de Richard Wagner" ins Deutsche (das Buch erschien dann 1895 im Verlag von August Schupp unter dem Titel "Das religiöse Gefühl im Werke Richard Wagners"), Chamberlains Arbeit an seinem Buch "Richard Wagner" (1895 im Bruckmann Verlag erschienen), eine neue Übersetzung Alfred Ernsts von Wagners "Walküre" (Br. v. 20. IX. 1893), Héberts Broschüre "Platon und Darwin" (Br. A. Ernsts vom 4. X. 1893), Ernsts Schrift "Richard Wagner et le drame contemporain" (Calmann Lévy, Paris, 1884), Héberts "Platon et Darwin. Dialogue philosophique" und Wagners "Religion und Kunst" (so Édouard Schuré in seinem Brief vom 17. VII. 1893) und zahlreiche weitere Veröffentlichungen Héberts und seiner Korrespondenzpartner. Cosima Wagner dankt Hébert in ihrem Brief vom 28. X. 1894 für die Zusendung von einer seiner Schriften über Wagner (wohl "Trois moments de la pensée de Richard Wagner") und auch Cosimas Tochter Blandine Gravina dankt für die Zusendung eines Buches, dürfte sich allerdings, wenn auch höchst elegant, darüber hinwegschummeln, daß sie es nicht gelesen hat ("Malheureusement, je n'ai pas le don de parler des choses profondes, même quand je les comprends, et puis je ne voudrais pas vous ennuyer […]", Br. v. 27. XI. 1894). Ein sehr ausführlicher Brief der Sprachwissenschaftlerin, Schriftstellerin und Übersetzerin (so auch Héberts) Anna Brunnemann bespricht die "Edda" und ihren Einfluß auf Wagner (18. VI. 1893), und der Initiator des ersten Wagner-Zirkels in Paris, der Untersuchungsrichter Antoine Lascoux, berichtet von einem Gespräch mit Engelbert Humperdinck, der bezüglich der Frage, ob Wagner Englisch beherrscht hätte, antwortete, daß dem wohl so gewesen sein müsse: "Je n'en suis pas sûr, mais sans doute il a bien compris cette langue, puisqu'il lisait souvent Shakespeare en originale" (Br. v. 18. IX. 1893). Hans von Wolzogen, der von 1878 bis 1938 die Bayreuther Blätter redigierte und herausgab, den Allgemeinen Richard Wagner-Verein leitete und eng mit Cosima Wagner befreundet war, bespricht u. a. eine Meinungsverschiedenheit über sein Verständnis des Parsifalcharakters ("Parsifal est l'esprit enfantin de l'Evangile", 5. XI. 1894) und den Einfluß Schopenhauers auf Wagner ("Zu bedauern bleibt es, daß Sie nicht mehr die jüngst erschienenen Briefe Wagners an Röckel benützen konnten […] weil sie am deutlichsten den Umschwung in Wagners Geiste wiedergeben", Übers.). - Héberts Korrespondenzpartner sind im einzelnen: 1) Alfred Bovet: EBmU. 19. Albert Wagner, der ältere Bruder von Richard Wagner, war nach Stationen in Leipzig, Breslau, Hamburg und Augsburg seit 1829 in Würzburg tätig. In den 1840er Jahren gab er seine Sängerlaufbahn infolge eines zunehmend stärker werdenden Halsleidens auf; von 1852 bis 1865 wirkte er als Regisseur an der Berliner Hofoper. - Die ersten und letzten Bll. stellenweise etwas fleckig; der Einband stellenweise etwas beschabt und berieben, gleichmäßig gebräunt und teils leicht fleckig; die Stickerei am Vorderdeckel leicht stockfleckig.

An den Bankier Baron Felix von Kaskel (1833-94) mit der Bitte um Überlassung eines "Glocken"-Musikinstruments zwecks Vergleichs mit dem "Gralsglockenklavier" sowie zu dessen Verbesserung und Weiterentwicklung: "Metallplatten und Glocken in gewünschter Tiefe besitzen wir bereits ebenso ein hier construirtes Glockeninstrument [...] Durch Herrn Professor Wüllner [d. i. der Opernsänger Ludwig Wüllner] erfuhr ich vor kurzem, dass Ihre in der Societa del Quartetto benutzten Glocken schon die nöthige Tiefe hätten, es wäre uns deshalb erwünscht gewesen sie mit unseren Instrumenten zu vergleichen und eventuell zu erwerben, während wir schon der Kosten wegen absehen würden weiter zu experimentiren [...]". - Adolf Groß, der nach dem Ableben Richard Wagners auf dessen Wunsch hin zum Vormund von Wagners Kindern bestimmt wurde, stand der Witwe Cosima in allen finanziellen und administrativen Fragen zur Seite. Er trug die schwierigen und vielseitigen geschäftlichen Aufgaben des gesamten Festspielunternehmens ganz allein und führte die Bayreuther Festspiele zu außergewöhnlichen Erfolgen. Die erste Version des "Glockenklaviers", eines Klaviaturglockenspiels, wurde 1881 speziell für Richard Wagner für die Oper "Parsifal" von der Klaviermanufaktur Steingraeber & Söhne konstruiert; es sollte tiefere Klänge als die Glocken des Wiener Stephansdoms erzeugen. - Mit gedr. Briefkopf "Verwaltungsrath der Bühnenfestspiele". Leicht fingerfleckig.

Am Donnerstag den 24. werde Anzengrubers "Pfarrer von Kirchfeld" und tags darauf Franz von Schönthans "Der Schwabenstreich" gegeben. - Das Wiener Stadttheater, 1870 nach Plänen von Ferdinand Fellner sen. und jun. errichtet, war von Max Friedländer und Heinrich Laube als bürgerliches Theater für klassische Stücke, moderne Tragödien und Lustspiele und in Konkurrenz zum k. k. Hofburgtheater konzipiert worden. 1884 brannte es völlig aus, wurde als Ruine von Anton Ronacher erworben, von den Architekten Ferdinand Fellner d. No date or place. 1947. London. From the Macqueen-Pope papers. See the two men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. MP is not named as the author but there is no doubt that he is. Item one has corrections in his hand. Both versions are simply titled ‘Will Fyffe’. The two versions exhibit a number of differences from one another. It is not clear where the obituary was published but it was probably the London magazine ‘Everybody’s’ for which MP contributed a weekly column. ONE: 4pp 4to double-spaced on four leaves. Autograph corrections to first sentence and an altogether more untidy effect including an additional passage on the last page which is correctly positioned in the second draft below suggest that this is an earlier draft. Begins: ‘It was a freak of fortune that made Will Fyffe into a music hall star instead of remaining on the legitimate stage where he had made his beginning as a small boy.’ Contains information not present in the second version including several astute assessments. For example: ‘Unlike Sir Harry Lauder the other great Scot of the Halls Will Fyffe was a realist. He could create a character and be it. It was not Will Fyffe at whom you gazed it was a gamekeeper a centenarian a Scots engineer on a steamship a guard on the Highland Railway - finding a report of the Battle of Waterloo in the lining of his ill fitting cap a country doctor a real country bumpkin the blacksmith at Gretna Green or the inebriated gentleman to whom Glasgow belonged on a Saturday night. He studied his types and he reproduced them magnificently. They were real people.’ Other topics include his mastery of make-up international popularity and ‘magnificent service’ in the First World War. TWO: 3pp 4to single-spaced on three leaves. More polished than One and with emendations deletions and recasting. Ends: ‘Our stage has lost one of its greatest artists and finest men. Ich würde sagen, Beethoven war seine große Liebe, alles andere war schön und akzeptabel, aber geliebt hat er nur Beethoven und Bach", erzählt Erna Otten-Attermann in einem Interview aus dem Jahr 2004/2005 mit Irene Suchy über ihren Lehrer Paul Wittgenstein ("Der Musiker im wunderschönen Schloß". In: Empty Sleeve. Der Musiker und Mäzen Paul Wittgenstein. Innsbruck u. a., Studien Verlag, 2006, SS. 37-43, 41). Es ist auch bekannt, daß Wittgenstein - um im Bild zu bleiben - zeitlebens einige Geliebte unterhielt; daß auch Louis Spohr zu diesen hinzuzuzählen ist, ist jedoch - von einem kleinen Hinweis abgesehen - bislang nicht bekannt gewesen. E. Findell erwähnt in einem Aufsatz in der Music Review (32/1971), daß Richard Strauss mit Paul Wittgenstein gewöhnlich Duette gespielt hätte und daß sie beide dieselbe Leidenschaft für Spohrs Kammermusik entwickelt hätten, und auch an anderer, etwas entlegenerer Stelle gibt es vereinzelt Hinweise aus Wittgensteins Vorliebe für Spohr. In zwei bislang unpublizierten Briefen Wittgensteins an Erich Wolfgang Korngold aus den 1920er Jahren - feilgeboten vom Wiener Antiquariat Inlibris Gilhofer Nfg. - ist wiederholt von Spohr die Rede. In einem Brief vom 25. V. 1923 bedauert er, einer Einladung zu einem Hauskonzert nicht die genaue Adresse hinzugefügt zu haben: "Verzeihen Sie diese Gedankenlosigkeit und die daraus für Sie entstandenen Unannehmlichkeiten. Mir war es doppelt leid, da die beiden Spohr'schen Stücke recht brav gespielt worden sind. Wunderer [d. i. der Oboist Alexander Wunderer, 1877-1955] hat sie seinen Schülern ordentlich einstudiert; er hat, so wie ich, eine Vorliebe für diesen jetzt ganz vernachlässigten Meister. Und ein Meister ist er, das verrät jede Note [...]". Wenig später folgt eine zweite, diesmal mit allen notwendigen Daten versehene Einladung: "Donnerstag den 1. November, nachmittags 4 Uhr, führt Wunderer mit seinen Schülern zwei Doppelquartette von Spohr bei mir in der Alleegasse auf. Hätten Sie Lust es anzuhören? [...]" (Br. v. 22. X. 1923). Diese keineswegs beiläufige Beschäftigung mit Spohr wird besonders an Hand des vorliegenden Bestands deutlich, der 39 (davon mehr als 24 in Erster Ausgabe) von Spohrs rund 300 Werken umfaßt. A likely very early American printing of two pieces tied directly to the upheavals of 1848 issued just as news and personalities of the European revolutions were electrifying American audiences. The first “Der Lieben Warnun†Love’s Warning is attributed to Ludwig I King of Bavaria whose abdication in March 1848 followed the political scandal surrounding his relationship with Lola Montez. The second “Les Girondins: Mourir pour la Patrie†with text by Alexandre Dumas and music by Alphonse Varney is one of the most popular revolutionary hymns of the period here presented in English and French. At center is the finely printed lithographic portrait of Lola Montez born Eliza Rosanna Gilbert 1821–1861 identified as “Countess of Landsfeld.†Produced by Sarony & Major the image reflects her brief but consequential position in Bavaria where Ludwig elevated her to the nobility and granted her influence at court. Her presence became politically explosive; student unrest and ministerial crisis forced both her exile and the King’s abdication making her a widely discussed celebrity at the time. <br /> <br /> Montez arrived in the United States in late 1848 quickly converting this notoriety into a touring career. She performed her “Spanish dances†including the sensational “Spider Dance†on stages from New York to New Orleans and later turned to lecturing advertising appearances on “Heroines of History†beauty and personal independence. During the early 1850s she followed the western circuit appearing in San Francisco during the Gold Rush where she commanded high fees and played to packed houses of miners and merchants. She toured through Australia in 1855–56 before returning to the United States where she settled in New York and shifted increasingly toward writing and reform-minded lectures before her death in 1861 possibly of syphilis. The piece was published by Joseph Atwill at his 201 Broadway location which he would abandon soon after to board the steamer Crescent City to Chagres eventually making his way to San Francisco and opening Atwill’s Music Store on Washington St. possibly San Francisco’s first music store before heading off to the mines and then returning to San Francisco a year later to open another music store. The lyrics encapsulate some of the many reasons that men and women were against women gaining the right to vote:<br /> <br /> "Work for the "cause" No time to pause Tell all the men that you know<br /> Why should a few Rule over you Suffrage is ev'ry man's foe<br /> Beautiful flower Sign of the hour If the Jonquil wants to fight <br /> You cannot fall You're the Queen of them all Emblem of Truth and Right"<br /> <br /> Anti-suffrage organizations like the Women's Anti-Suffrage Association of Boston cited many reasons for their position including that women did not want the burden of the vote that women were already busy with caring for homes and families and that women were not capable of making astute political decisions. "A little lad with curly hair stood by his father's knee / Could see that he was crying he was sad as he could be / He sobbed and said "I feel so blue" as tears ran down his cheeks / "Oh father where is mother she has not been home for weeks" / His Pa said "Lad the tale is sad She's down at Suffrage Hall / She's gone to fight for women's rights why there's their bugle call." In comparison to the denigrating tone of other suffrage songs from the period the chorus here conveys familial pride: "Hear the tramp of their feet - as they come down the street / Gee those girlies look sweet They're all dressed up so neat / Your dear old ma just took a fighter's place / She likes the smell of powder 'cause it's always on her face / There's no rats in her hair - you can see she don't care / Holds her head in the air Gee your mother's a bear / Tramp Tramp Tramp the girls are marching Your Mother's gone away to join the army." , 1829 ; Lettre de protestation contre sa mise à l’écart de l’École Royale de Musique. La date du 4 août 1829 est notée d’une autre main au dos de la lettre.Alexis de Garaudé (Nancy 1779 - Paris 1852) est le fils d’un conseiller au parlement de Nancy. Il reçut une bonne éducation où la musique n’entrait que comme divertissement. Ruiné lors de la Révolution il partit à Paris pour se consacrer entièrement à la musique. Il entre comme professeur à l’École Royale en 1816 et y enseigne selon Fétis III p. 402 jusqu’en 1841, ce qui laisse penser que cette lettre aura convaincu son destinataire. Il est l’auteur de nombreux ouvrages d’enseignement musical. Le destinataire n’est pas nommé autrement que M. le vicomte, il s’agirait donc du vicomte a. Dubois de Beauchesne, alors directeur de cet établissement. “Quelque péniblement froissé que je puisse être par la décision que vous me faîtes l’honneur de m’annoncer, je la reçois avec respect, persuadé que vous l’avez jugée être dans les intérêts de l’École Royale d’après quelques renseignements qui vous auront été transmis sur moi (...) par des personnes qui jamais n’ont assisté à une seule de mes leçons, depuis 13 ans (...) Si la preuve contraire à leur assertion hazardée résulte des prix nombreux obtenus aux concours par mes élèves ; si 8 ou 10 d’entre eux jouent avec succès les premiers rôles en province (...) si ces renseignements erronés (...) étaient formellement contredits par MM. London: c.1850. Folio 35 x 24 cm. 160 leaves each numbered by hand to top left of verso. A collection of 44 songs most with separate title-page bound together in a contemporary binding of half maroon morocco over marbled boards ownership label to upper cover the spine ruled and decorated in gilt decorative patterned endpapers. With a leaf of manuscript index bound in at front. 6 lithographic title-vignettes. Ex libris John Webb his ownership label to upper cover and initials appearing throughout. Extremities rubbed some occasional toning and spotting generally a very good sound collection of Victorian songs. The Ethiopian Serenaders was an American blackface minstrel troupe successful in the 1840s and 1850s. Through various line-ups they were managed and directed by James A. Dumbolton c.1808– and are sometimes mentioned as the Boston Minstrels Dumbolton Company or Dumbolton's Serenaders. In late 1845 with line-up changes but retaining Germon and Stanwood the Serenaders left for a tour in England and possibly Ireland. An advertisement in The Times referred to their first concert to be held at the Hanover Square Rooms on 21 January 1846. The performers were Francis Carr Germon Moody G. Stanwood Gilbert Pelham or Pell; the younger brother of Dick Pelham with whom he had previously performed George Alfred Harrington and George Warren White. Pelham played bones and was the lead clown; Harrington bass and White baritone sang and played banjo a newly introduced instrument at the time; Stanwood tenor played accordion; and Germon alto played tambourine and sang comic ballads.9 Their songs included "Buffalo Gals" "Lucy Neal" and "Old Dan Tucker". For most of 1846 they performed regularly at the St James's Theatre in London. They played in taverns and theatres as well as private concerts for the aristocracy; they appeared before the Duke of Devonshire and by special command played before Queen Victoria and the Duke of Wellington at Arundel Castle. Music hall historian Harold Scott wrote of them: "They charmed principally by their gentility and this impression was heightened by the fact that they appeared in conventional tail coats and white waistcoats." The Era reported that "their songs are of a melodious and artistic nature. Several of the company possess quite good voices and the comedians manage to get the utmost fun out of their business without resorting to vulgarity in any form". In England they were frequently mistaken for real black men a misconception they always denied asserting that they had not the "least drop of black blood in their veins"; accordingly "they lost no time in published portraits of themselves with the white faces bestowed upon them by nature." The troupe's performances represented "the high point of minstrelsy's success in early Victorian Britain". However in their absence abroad rivals such as the Christy Minstrels gained a following in the United States. Upon their return from England in 1847 the Spirit of the Times wrote that the Serenaders' formal style in music and dress was too refined for audiences accustomed to the ribald humour of the Christys. Of a Serenaders' performance the article said ". we listen and are pleased but leave with little desire to return." At Christys "we listen and laugh and desire to go again and again." 1.
