Light of My Heart inscribed as follows: “To Blessed Edith / These mean your / complete freedom and / victory in the light / Edna.â€. Fine condition. Two apparently unrecorded musical scores issued by Saint Germain Press at the height of the I AM Activity the metaphysical religious movement founded by Guy Ballard writing as “Godfre Ray King†and later led by his wife Edna Anne Wheeler Ballard. Music occupied a central role in I AM devotional practice where hymns and affirmational songs functioned as instruments of spiritual alignment intended to invoke divine “Light†and facilitate communion with Ascended Masters particularly the figure of Saint Germain. Blending Theosophy New Thought and American esoteric Christianity such compositions were likely performed in ceremonial services instructional classes and regional conclaves that combined ritual affirmation with musical participation. These sheets were part of the movement’s broader effort to disseminate spiritual teachings through accessible devotional media linking printed text spoken decree and musical performance within a unified metaphysical practice.<br /> <br /> The inscription by Edna Ballard adds notable historical significance. Following Guy Ballard’s death in 1939 Edna assumed leadership of the movement and became one of its principal public voices guiding the organization through both rapid expansion and intense federal scrutiny culminating in United States v. Ballard 1944 a landmark Supreme Court case addressing the limits of judicial inquiry into religious belief. Ephemeral musical publications from the I AM Activity are scarce particularly those bearing direct association with Edna Ballard or evidencing devotional use. A delightful archive of 29 pieces of sheet music related to the Portland Rose Carnival and the Portland Rose Festival from the Victorian through the Mid-20th-Century encompassing marches waltzes piano music and more all dedicated to the wonders of roses in Portland Oregon in June.

Approx. 150 pp all unpaginated some 4 others 6 pp. all w/ self-printed illustrated or colour-illustrated softcovers 3 w/ interior photo illustrations of Rose Court or Portland environs some w/ dustsoiling a few w/ minor closed tears edgewear minor creasing on a couple still a grouping in VG condition overall from the library of former Portland Rose Festival enthusiast Lois Jane Barlow Lassell 1925-2017 who had worked as a “Rosie the Riveter†aircraft riveter as well as welder in the Kaiser shipyards during World War II and later worked as a Portland Police stenographer following the War. This archive of sheet music reveals the musical tastes and cultural interests of Portland Rose Festival aficionados beginning with a Waltz by Harry Miller & George Jameson Roses Fair are Dreaming issued in 1894 by William Pfunder Pharmaceutical Chemist for the 1894 Rose show up to Everett Heacock’s zippy Portland and Roses in 1969. Four of the pre-World War I items were printed by the enterprising Portland printer Bushong & Co. and the vast majority were all printed in Portland for the Portland market. Over half of them have no institutional holdings recorded or actual physical copies such as Marshall’s “Portland you’re a dear old town: roses fragrant†for the 1911 Rose Festival; Prsley’s 1912 Rose Festival March or Lynette Henderson’s The Whole World knows the Portland Rose in 1915. Daniel Wilson dedicated his Rose in Portland Grows to the Royal Rosarians who oversaw the Rose festival and even the Jazz Age reached Portland with Thurber & Lacey’s Rosetime Foxtrot first performed by the “Novelty Syncopating Hawaiian Trio†pictured on the front cover and distributed by Roseway Dairy. Adelaide Dorothy Graham’s 1922 Beautiful Home of the Rose features a number of scenic photos in and round Portland OR. A detailed list is available upon request. Notated in brown ink on 5-7 stave rastrum-ruled paper including one "Solo" part; four "Dessus" parts; three "2e. Dessu ou hatue contre pour l'Enfant" parts; two "Haute contre pour l'Enfant" parts; and one bass part with text "In tribulatione mea" in the same meter and key as the other parts.<br /> <br /> "Quid tibi feci" <br /> 4ff. of various sizes. Notated in black ink on 8-9 stave rastrum-ruled paper being several copies of the bass part of a choral piece for larger forces. <br /> <br /> Some small stains and soiling to a few leaves but otherwise in very good condition. Das It-Girl der ersten Stunde war in Salzburg 1925 im "Mirakel" und 1927 im "Sommernachtstraum" zu sehen. Einige wenige Rollen und eine gescheiterte Ehe später nahm sie sich Anfang 1938 mit 33 Jahren das Leben. - Ein Blatt lose; der Einband aufgrund der vielen montierten Karten etwas aufgeworfen, sonst gut erhalten.
