Ombre nella mente. Lombroso e lo scapigliato
br. Quando il giovane Carlo Dossi, esponente di spicco della Scapigliatura milanese, lesse "L'uomo delinquente" di Cesare Lombroso, ne rimase folgorato. L'opera conteneva categorie psicologiche impressionanti e osservazioni cliniche sul legame fra genio e follia. Travolto dall'infatuazione per quelle idee, Dossi scrisse subito a Lombroso esprimendogli la propria stima. Fra i due si stabilì allora uno strano legame epistolare destinato a mutare nel tempo. Dapprima Dossi, fine umorista sensibile alle bizzarrie della mente, divenne suo collaboratore a distanza con l'invio dei più disparati testi letterari segnati dalla pazzia, contributi che l'alienista prontamente utilizzava nelle sue opere. Poi Dossi sentì l'esigenza di interpellare Lombroso come medico a cui inviare informazioni sulle proprie sofferenze psichiche. Assorbite le teorie lombrosiane, Dossi si trasformò ben presto in una sorta di psichiatra in grado di formulare giudizi diagnostici, come capitò con l'opera "I mattoidi" e con un originalissimo articolo scritto per la rivista di criminologia diretta da Lombroso. Dopo vent'anni di conoscenza reciproca, soprattutto epistolare, i vari Dossi che erano mutati nel tempo (collaboratore, paziente e scrittore-alienista) si unificavano finalmente in una figura singola, che trovava nella "Grafologia" di Lombroso una sistemazione precisa accanto ad altri geni un po' matti, come Zola, Ariosto, Tolstoj e Schopenhauer. In fondo se il genio era una forma di pazzia, non doveva essere accertato, ma diagnosticato. Lo strano rapporto fra Lombroso e Dossi - che finì per influenzare profondamente entrambi - viene qui raccontato per la prima volta sulla base di un epistolario inedito e di documenti finora rimasti nell'ombra. La ricostruzione storica, da cui emergono molti dettagli spassosi, è anche il ritratto dell'esuberante atmosfera intellettuale dell'Italia ottocentesca.
