‎First appearance of a main paper in the history of chemistry. ""Graham's major contribution to inorganic chemistry is presented in a paper entitled ""Researcheson thee Arseniates, Phosphates....."" 1833 (the paper offered)...his elucidation of the differences between the three phosphoric acids and his discovery of their polybasicity provided Liebig with the clue to the modern concept of polybasic acids...""(A Source Book in Chemistry p. 333).Graham’s major contribution to inorganic chemistry is his paper !Researches on the Arseniates, Phosphates, and Modifications of Phosphoric Acid,"" in which he elucidated the differences between the three phosphoric acids. This research and the style of the paper are reminiscent of Joseph Black’s work on magnesia and the alkalies carried out in Glasgow eighty years earlier. Graham’s discovery of the polybasicity of these acids provided Justus Liebig with the clue to the modern concept of polybasic acids. In this way he further explained 'exomosis'.""Thomas Graham (1805-1869) studies diffusion in gases and solutions and discovers and names the phenomenon now known as the osmotic force. He finds that certain substances (i.e. glue) pass more slowly through membranes than others (i.e. common salt). ‎First appearance of this pioneer work in which Graham introduces the terminology and fundamental concepts of colloid chemistry.""Although some isolated investigations on colloids had been carried out before Graham, his publications in this field laid the foundations of colloid chemistry. In ""On the Diffusion of Liquids,"" Graham applied to liquids the exact method of inquiry he had applied to gases twenty years before, and he succeeded in placing the subject of liquid diffusion on about the same footing as that to which he had raised the subject of gaseous diffusion prior to the discovery of his numerical law. He showed that the rate of diffusion was approximately proportional to the concentration of the original solution, increased with rise in temperature, and was almost constant for groups of chemically similar salts at equal absolute (not molecular) concentrations and different with different groups. He believed that liquid diffusion was similar to gaseous diffusion and vaporization with dilute solutions, but with concentrated solutions he noted a departure from the ideal relationship, similar to that in gases approaching liquefaction under pressure.""(DSB).‎

‎First apperance of an importent paper in which Grignard revealed the ""Grignard Reagent"", an important means of preparing organic compounds from smaller precursor molecules. For this work, Grignard was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1912 jointly with fellow Frenchman Paul Sabatier.""A large number of general synthetic methods had been developed by the end of the nineteenth century. However, one of the most versatile and importent was first described as the new century opened. This was the Grignard synthesis."" ‎First appearance of Helmholtz’s dissertation in which the German physicist derived the Ostwald–Freundlich equation and showed that Kelvin's equation could be transformed into the Ostwald–Freundlich equation. The German physical chemist Wilhelm Ostwald derived the equation apparently independently in 1900" however, his derivation contained a minor error which the German chemist Herbert Freundlich corrected in 1909. The Ostwald–Freundlich equation governs boundaries between two phases specifically, it relates the surface tension of the boundary to its curvature, the ambient temperature, and the vapor pressure or chemical potential in the two phases.‎

The paper deals with the dynamical interplay between photochemistry and photography and is of the greatest importence in applied photography. This first importent spectrum is reproduced here on one of the plates (in stipple engraving). In this paper he introduces the photographical concepts 'positive' and 'negative' to express, respectively, pictures in which the lights and shades are the same as in nature, or as in the original model, and in which they are opposite.For this large paper John Herschel was awarded the Copley archives winners Prize for 1840.""The object which the author has in view in this memoir is to place on record a number of insulated facts and observations respecting the relations bothof white light, and of the differently refrangible rays, to various chemical agents whic have offered themselves to his notice in the course of his photographical experiments, suggested by the announcement of M. ‎First edition of Hess's most famous paper, in which he outlined his law on thermochemistry. His principle, a progenitor for the first law of thermodynamics, came to be called Hess's law. It states that in a series of chemical reactions, the total energy gained or lost depends only on the initial and final states, regardless of the number or path of the steps. This is also known as the law of constant heat summation. Hess described here his newly discovered law, known as Hess's Law, in form of a letter to Arago. (The letter was also published in Comptes Rendus in a slightly modified form). ""Here thermochemistry received its first importent advance at the hands of Germain Hess, who showed that the heat evolved in a reaction is the same regardless of whether the reaction is carried out directly or in a number of steps..."" (Leicester & Klickstein ""A Source Book in Chemistry"", pp. 329-332). This paper preceded the larger papers also published in ""Annales de Chimie et de Physique"" and the original (and larger) paper in ""Bulletin scientifique, Academie impériale des Sciences (St. Petersbourg, 1840)"".
