‎First appearance of a groundbreaking paper in chemistry in which Lomonosov describes his discovery of the transition of a metal into passive state, and this is the first scientific description of this phenomena. He observed and described fast termination of the dissolution of iron in concentrated nitric acid, and attributed this to a change in the solvent properties.""Lomonosov employed corpuscular mechanics in chemical explanations more extensively than Boyle had done. Treating chemical compounds as particles in adhesion, he held that ""adhesion is eliminated and renewed by means of motion.....since no change in a body can take place withouy motion"". He attempted to apply these theories to chemical phenomena - although he was limited to speculation- in papers on the action of chemical solvents in general..""(DSB VIII, p. 469).""Lomonosov was founder of Russian science, and he would be universally recognized as a great pioneer of science had he been born a West European. He was famous also for his literary works, including poems and dramas. In 1755 he wrote a Russian Grammar that reformed the language and in the same year he helped found the University of Moscow. In 1760 he published the first history of Russia.""(Isaac Asimov).‎

‎Ueber die Bedeutung der anorganischen Salze für die Ernährung des Thiers. [In Hoppe-Seyler Zeitschrift für Physiologische Chemie, V. Band, 1. Heft, 1881]. - [THE STARTING-POINT OF MODERN RESEARCH ON VITAMINS]‎

‎Scarce first edition of this milestone paper on vitamin research, which constitutes ""the starting-point of modern research on vitamins"" (G&M), being the first documentation of the existence of dietary factors of the nature of vitamins. In spite of its groundbreaking character, Lunin's discovery passed almost unnoticed and his foundational conclusions did not convey further investigation until years later. ""In 1880 Lunin showed that a synthetic milk diet inhibited the growth of animals. Little attention was paid to this discovery."" (PMM 404). It was not until Hopkin's 1912 milestone paper (""Feeding Experiments..."") that the scientific explanation of Lunin's observations was produced.""It is now generally agreed that the first clear evidence, based upon experiment, for the existence of dietary factors of the nature of vitamins came from the school of Bunge at Basel. In 1881 Lunin, one of the workers in that school, fed mice upon an artificial mixture of the separate constituents of milk: of all the constituents, that is, which were then known, namely the proteins, fats carbohydrates, and salts. He found that upon such a mixture the animals failed to survive and was led to conclude that ""a natural food such as milk must therefore contain besides these known principal ingredients small quantities of unknown substances essential to life"". Such a statement, already half a century old, when allowed to stand out clear and apart from a context which tended to bury it, seems to contain the essentials of what is believed today."" (Hopkins, p. 213). ""Working in Bunge's laboratory, Lunin prepared synthetic milk diets and showed that they lacked an unknown factor necessary for animal growth, and that animals cannot live on a chemically pure (i.e. vitamin-free) diet. This was the starting-point of modern research on vitamins."" (Garrison & Morton). Garrison & Morton: 1042.See:Sir F.G. Hopkins: The Earlier History of Vitamin Research. In: Nobel Lectures. Pörner added extensive notes of his own, and there is a separate alphabetical sequence of articles in each volume, as the order of entries was not the same in German after translation from the French. Although he did not know the author's name, the Dictionnaire having appeared anonymously, Pörner was enthusiastic about the book but preferred not to call it a dictionary. In this memoir he anticipated Lavoisier’s conclusions by identifying the constituents of gypsum as water, lime, and vitriolic acid.Bologna stone, any of the dense, silvery white stones first found (1603) on Mount Paderno, near Bologna, by an Italian cobbler-alchemist, Vicenzo Cascariolo, who synthesized from them a luminescent material that glowed at night after being exposed by day to the Sun. Originally thought to be the philosopher’s stone that was believed capable of transmuting base metals into gold, Bologna stone ultimately was shown to be the mineral barite, barium sulfate.‎

Supplementband. Pp. 354-364 a. 1 folded plate (The atomic volume curve). The entire volume offered ""VII. Supplementband."" (4),380 pp. and 3 folded plates. Small stamp on titlepage and verso of.‎

‎First appearance of this groundbreaking, classic paper in which Lothar Meyer first fully expressed his ideas of the relationsships between the atomic weight of the elements and their properties. In his ""Curve"" he plots the atomic volumes of the chemical elements against their weights and connects the points to obtain a curve with proonounced peaks and valleys. The periodicity in atomic volume and electrochemical behaviour revealed by this curve is matched by periodicities in other properties, such as fusibility and volatility etc.The ""Periodic Law"" may be stated in the words: The properties of the Elements are a periodic function of (or vary in a periodic manner with) the atomic weight. (Findlay).Lothar Meyer and Dimitri Mendeleev independently discovered the periodic system, but ""Meyer did not publish this work until after the appearance of Mendeleev's first paper on the subject in 1869. His table was very similar to that of Mendeleev, but it contained some improvements and was, perhaps, influential in causing some of the revisions made by Mendeleev in the second version of his table, published in 1870. In general, Meyer was more impressed by the periodicity of the physical properties of the elements, while Medeleev saw more clearly the chemical consequences of the periodic law.""(Source Book in Chemistry, p. 434). - Weeks p. 207 ff.‎

‎Die Atomgewichte der Elemente aus den Originalzahlen neu berechnet.‎

‎Leipzig, Breitkopf & Härtel, 1883. Contemp. hcalf. Raised bands, gilt spine, titlelabel with gilt lettering. X,245,(1) pp. Internally fine and clean.‎

‎Scarce first edition of this importent work which is a large extension of Meyer's classic paper of 1870, in which he independently of Mendeleev, discovered that the properties of the elements are a periodic function of (or vary in a periodic manner with) the atomic weight - the Periodic Table.""The significance of atomic weights in the demonstration of chemical periodicity, and the suspicion that some atomic weights were not accurate, led Meyer and Seubert to examine critically and to recalculate all atomic weights then considered importent. Their study was published in 1883 (the work offered). All atomic weights were referred to the standard of unity for the atomic weight of hydrogen, a standard that Meyer championed.....In 1903 the newly created International Commission of Atomic Weeights decided to publish parallel tables based on H=1 and O=16, a practice followed for many years.""(DSB IX, pp. 351-352).‎

‎Remarque à propos de la découverte du gallium.‎

‎First apperance of this importent paper which established that Gallium is identical with Eka-aluminum (the missing element between Aluminum and Indium) in Mendelejeff's periodic table. The properties of the new element corresponded well with those predicted. A bitter contorversy was raised between the discoverer of Gallium, Lecog de Boisbaudran and Mendelejeff. ""The discovery of the three elements predicted by Mendeleev was, however, of decisive importance in the acceptance of his law. In 1875 Lecoq de Boisbaudran, knowing nothing of Mendeleev’s work, discovered by spectroscopic methods a new metal, which he named gallium. Both in the nature of its discovery and in a number of its properties gallium coincided with Mendeleev’s prediction for eka-aluminum, but its specific weight at first seemed to be less than predicted. Hearing of the discovery, Mendeleev sent to France ""Zametka po povodu otkrytia gallia"" (the paper offered) (""Note on the Occasion of the Discovery of Gallium""), in which he insisted that gallium was in fact his eka-aluminum. Although Lecoq de Boisbaudran objected to this interpretation, he made a second determination of the specific weight of gallium and confirmed that such was indeed the case. From that moment the periodic law was no longer a mere hypothesis, and the scientific world was astounded to note that Mendeleev, the theorist, had seen the properties of a new element more clearly than the chemist who had empirically discovered it. From this time, too, Mendeleev’s work came to be more widely known""(DSB).Parkinson Breakthroughs"" 1875 C.‎

‎Mendeleev's first step towards his chemical theory of solutions.""After 1884, Mendeleev concerned himself with the expansion of liquids and in particular with the specific weights of aqueous solutions of various substances. He was able to conclude that in such solutions discontinuous relationships exist between the solvent and the solute, attesting to the existence of determinate chemical relationships - a necessary condition, according to chemical atomic theory. Mendeleev thus arrived at a chemical theory of solutions, which he opposed to the theory of electrolytic dissociation of dilute aqueous solutions set forth by Arrhenius.""(DSB).The volume contains further notable papers LECOQ DE BOISBAUDRAN ""Séparation du Gallium d'avec les autres Éléments"", pp. 176-271 - he discovered Gallium in 1877, this long paper describes describes the separation of a long sereis of other metals, also the rare earth metals. - 3 importent papers by FRANCOIS MARIE RAOULT on molecular weight of organic compounds, follwing up his discovery of Raoult's Law two years before.‎
