L'ouvrage est orné de 74 échantillons de tissus montrant des réalisations de nombreux coloris fabriqués par l'entreprise textile Dollfus-Mieg, et et d'une planche figurant des fibres textiles. Ce manuel de référence, dédié à Jean-Baptiste Dumas, se consacre à la chimie de la couleur, à la teinture, au blanchiment et à l'impression des textiles. Il décrit ainsi les matières tinctoriales au point de vue de leurs propriétés chimiques et de leur préparation. Schützenberger (1829-1897) fut professeur de chimie à Mulhouse et Paris ; on lui doit, entre autres, des études sur les propriétés des colorants de garance et de leur importance pour la teinture, ainsi que plusieurs nouvelles techniques de teinture à l'indigo.
