San Francisco Telephone Directory August 1950
San Francisco: Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. Good. 1950. Paperback. This is an oversized paperback book. The book is in Good only condition. The cardstock covers are in generally clean condition with the exception of the front cover - which has noticeable generalized discoloration and several patches of the top layer of paper removed. The text pages are generally clean and bright. There are several pages that have clear tape repairs. The first several text pages have noticeable wrinkling and wear. "Twenty years after the News Letter was first printed the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. In 1878 San Franciscos first telephone instruments were installed in the News Letter office at Merchant and Montgomery streets and in Mr. Marriotts home at the corner of Jones and Lombard streets. Today San Francisco has 28.8 telephones for each one hundred inhabitants the highest average of any important city in the world. Obviously the honor of being the first subscriber is not a small one. Distant Electric Vision Telegraphic Photography and Electric Vision Telegraphic Photography and Electric Vision.

Entire volumes offered. "Emmanuel College" in gilt lettering to spines. Two library stamps to title-page and first index page. A small tear to top of spine and signs after removal of label to spine. Very slight wear to extremities otherwise a fine and clean copy. Rare in the publisher's binding. P. 151; Pp. 105-6. Entire volume: LII 686 pp. First printing of this seminal publication in the history of television; it is generally considered the earliest and most important paper in the early development of television. It constitutes the first description of an electronic method of producing television.

Responding to an article in the June 4 1908 issue of Nature by Shelford Bidwell entitled "Telegraphic Photography and Electric Vision" A. A. Campbell Swinton wrote a letter to the editor of Nature proposing a solution to the most pressing problems in achieving "distant electric vision": "This part of the problem of obtaining distant electric vision can probably be solved by the employment of two beams of kathode rays one at the transmitting and one at the receiving station synchronously deflected by the varying fields of two electromagnets placed at right angles to one another and energised by two alternating electric currents of widely different frequencies so that the moving extremities of the two beams are caused to sweep simultaneously over the whole of the required surface within the one-tenth of a second necessary to take advantage of visual persistence." SWINTON.

"The final insurmountable problems with any form of mechanical scanning were the limited number of scans per second which produced a flickering image and the relatively large size of each hole in the disk which resulted in poor resolution. In 1908 a Scottish electrical engineer A. A. Campbell Swinton wrote that the problems 'can probably be solved by the employment of two beams of kathode rays' instead of spinning disks. Cathode rays are beams of electrons generated in a vacuum tube. Steered by magnetic fields or electric fields Swinton argued they could 'paint' a fleeting picture on the glass screen of a tube coated on the inside with a phosphorescent material. Because the rays move at nearly the speed of light they would avoid the flicker problem and their tiny size would allow excellent resolution. Swinton never built a set for as he said the possible financial reward would not be enough to make it worthwhile." Britannica.

Siers & Siers Early Television no 366. hardcover

Hittorf's paper: pp. 558-631. First appearance of these main paper in the development of Television and an importent step towards the discovery of Rntgen-Rays as Hittorf describes his discovery how the cathode glow spread toward the anode how solid objects near the cathode would cast shadows in the phosphorescent glow in the glass and that this glow was produced by raylike emanations that traveled in straight lines from the cathode rays.

"Following Plckers studies in 1869 Hittorf began a series of investigations of the discharge phenomena. He verified the effect of the magnetic field on the glow discharge and the fluorescence of the glass tube itself. He found that any solid or fluid body whether an insulator or a conductor when placed in front of the cathode cut off the glow. By constructing an L-shaped tube with electrodes at the two ends Hittorf was able to establish that the glow was generated from a point cathode and traveled in straight lines. "We will therefore speak of rectilinear path or rays of glow and consider any point of the cathode as the source of a cone of rays" .These results led the brilliant researches on gaseous conduction by Crookes ten years later 1879 and the eventual identification of the cathode rays as electrons by J.J. Thomson 1897."DSB VI p.439.

Shiers & Shiers "Early Televison. A Bibliography to 1940" No.45. - Magie "A Source Book in Physics" p. 561 ff. hardcover

SCHENKER L. FIRST DESCRIPTION OF THE PUSH BUTTON TELEPHONE
Pushbutton Calling with a Two-Group Voice Frequency Code.
New York American Telephone and Telegraph Company 1960. 8vo. Volume XXXIX 49 January No. 1 1960 of "The Bell System Technical Journal". Entire issue offered in the original printed blue wrappers. A bit of sunning to spine and previous owner's stamp to top of front wrapper otherwise a very nice clean and fresh copy. Pp. 235-255. Entire issue: 264 pp. First printing of this seminal paper in which the push-button telephone is first described. Push-button telephony was considered a revolution within telecommunication.
It replaced rotary dial telephones that had been in use since 1891 and the technique behind the touch-tone format is today used for all cell phones.
The first prototypes were invented in 1941 by the Bell System these were however never fully functional and therefore not brought to the commercial market. The research was shelved during WWII and was not prioritized until later after the transistor had been developed and tones could be produced with electronic oscillators in the late 1950ies.

The first push-button telephone reached the commercial market in 1963 though in the mid 1970ies the majority of phone users still had rotary phones.

The issue contains the following papers:
1. Gray was highly influential in the development of television and conducted pioneering research in this field.

"The design of a television system once the fundamental principles are understood involves a detailed consideration of the methods by which the several important functions are to be performed.
1 In the present system the initial signal wave is obtained by sweeping a spot of light over the subject in parallel lines completely scanning it once every 18th of a second. The light reflected is collected by large photoelectric cells which control the transmitted current."
