Follwing the discovery of X-rays by Rntgen Bexquerel investigated fluorescent materials to see if they also emitted X-rays. He exposed a fluorescent uranium salt pechblende to light and then placed it on a wrapped photographic plate. He found that a faint image was left on the plate which he believed was due to the pichblende emitting the light it had absorbed as a more penetrating radiation. However by chace he left a sample that had not been exposed to light on top of a photographic plate in a drawer. he noticed that the photographic plate also had a a faint image of the pechblende. After several chemical tests he concluded that these "Becquerel rays" were a property of atoms. He had by chace discovered radio-activity and prompted thee beginning of the nuclear age. He shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 with Marie and Pierre Curie. The "Becquerel Rays" were later discovered to be a composite of three forms of emanation distinguished by Rutherford as alpha beta and gamma rays.

Dibner: 163 the later Mmoire from 1903 - PMM: 393 1903- Mmoire - Garrison & Morton: 2001 only the first paper. - Magie "A Source Book in Physics" p. 610 ff. - Norman:157. hardcover

SWINTON A. A. CAMPBELL. THE FIRST DESCRIPTION OF AN ELECTRONIC METHOD OF PRODUCING TELEVISION
Distant Electric Vision Telegraphic Photography and Electric Vision Telegraphic Photography and Electric Vision.
London Macmillan & Co 1908. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary half calf with five raised bands and two black leather title labels with gilt lettering to spine. In "Nature" May - October 1908 Vol. LXXVIII 78. Library label to first page of index and bookplate pasted on to front free end-paper. Fine and clean Fine and clean P. 151; Pp. 105-6. Entire volume: LII 686 pp. First printing of this seminal publication in the history of television; it is generally considered the earliest and most important paper in the early development of television. It constitutes the first description of an electronic method of producing television.

Responding to an article in the June 4 1908 issue of Nature by Shelford Bidwell entitled "Telegraphic Photography and Electric Vision" A. A. Campbell Swinton wrote a letter to the editor of Nature proposing a solution to the most pressing problems in achieving "distant electric vision": "This part of the problem of obtaining distant electric vision can probably be solved by the employment of two beams of kathode rays one at the transmitting and one at the receiving station synchronously deflected by the varying fields of two electromagnets placed at right angles to one another and energised by two alternating electric currents of widely different frequencies so that the moving extremities of the two beams are caused to sweep simultaneously over the whole of the required surface within the one-tenth of a second necessary to take advantage of visual persistence." SWINTON.

"The final insurmountable problems with any form of mechanical scanning were the limited number of scans per second which produced a flickering image and the relatively large size of each hole in the disk which resulted in poor resolution. In 1908 a Scottish electrical engineer A. A. Campbell Swinton wrote that the problems 'can probably be solved by the employment of two beams of kathode rays' instead of spinning disks. Cathode rays are beams of electrons generated in a vacuum tube. Steered by magnetic fields or electric fields Swinton argued they could 'paint' a fleeting picture on the glass screen of a tube coated on the inside with a phosphorescent material. Because the rays move at nearly the speed of light they would avoid the flicker problem and their tiny size would allow excellent resolution. Swinton never built a set for as he said the possible financial reward would not be enough to make it worthwhile." Britannica.

Hiers Early Television no 366. hardcover

Clean and fine. First edition of Hertz's seminal paper on electromagnetic waves in which he empirically demonstrates Maxwell's equations. This discovery and its demonstration led directly to the invention radio of communication television and Radar. The paper is the "ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE PRODUCTION BY ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE OF WAVES WHICH HAVE THE PROPERTY OF VERY LONG WAVES"H.M. Evans.

Hertz demonstrates what Maxwell had predicted that electromagnetic waves radiated in space with the speed of light. Hertz determined these waves to be of greater length than light and that they could be reflected.

"Experimental proof by Hertz of the Faraday-Maxwell hypothesis that electrical waves can be projected through space was begun in 1887 eight years after Maxwell's death. The two main requirements were a a method of producing the waves supposing that they existed and b a method of detecting them once they were produced." PMM 377. In the present paper Hertz "describes the apparatus that he had devised for the detection and measurement of electromagnetic waves the key to his later success. To prove that electromagnetic waves can be projected through space it was necessary to devise a means of both producing the waves and more difficult at the time of detecting them once produced." Norman Library No. 1123.

"Hertz's researches on electrical waves vindicated the Helmholtz ideal of the physicist as one whose competences embraced both experiment and mathematics. Hertz entered physics at the right time for one of his abilities to make a critical contribution; because the outstanding problem of physics was the disorderly condition of electrodynamics what was needed was someone with the theoretical power to analyze the competing theories and with the experimental judgment to produce the evidence that would persuade the physical community that a decision between the theories had been reached." DSB VI 348b.

"In the early 1890's the young inventor Guglielmo Marconi read of Hertz's electric wave experiments in an Italian electrical journal and began considering the Possibility of communication by wireless waves. Hertz's work initiated a technological development as momentous as it physical counterpart." DSB VI 349a. unknown

Grove's almost incidental report in 1852 that the discharge was "striated by transverse non-luminous bands." In his initial investigations showed that if enough care were exercised to achieve a sufficiently low pressure situations could be produced in the Torricellian vacuum. Next he demonstrated that both a static electric machine and a Ruhmkorff coil with a Grove cell produced a striated discharge. This once again confirmed the identity of these two electricities. He also noticed that a powerfull elexctromagnet divided the striations into what appeared to be two distinct columns. Telstar I made a tremendous impact on the world by transmitting transatlantic live television. "Telstar captured the popular imagination in a way that it is hard to believe any satellite especially a communication satellite could do today. According to AT&T more than half the population of the UK watched its first transatlantic transmission a remarkable percentage given that far fewer people than today owned television sets." Gavaghan Something New under the Sun p. 188
According to the US Space Objects Registry Telstar 1 and 2 were still in orbit as of May 2010. The Telstar-satellites represent the true beginning of satellite communication.

Telstar 1 was launched on July 10th 1962 and was the world's first active repeater satellite the primary function of which was transmission of voice black/white and colour television fascimilie and high- and low-speed data. The Telstar-project had five overall objectives; to demonstrate broadband transmission test operational communication satellite reliability obtain operational experience with ground terminals and provide space radiation measurement.

Telstar 1 was a medium-altitude satellite with an elliptic orbit which was completed once every 2 hours and 37 minutes. Due to Telstar's non-geosynchronous orbit its availability for transatlantic signals was limited to 20 minutes in each orbit that passed over the Atlantic Ocean. The Telstar 2 was almost identical with Telstar 1 but had a higher orbit to reduce exposure to the damaging effect of the radiation belt.

The Chief of NASA's Communications Satellite Programs wrote in 1966: "Although not the first communications satellite Telstar is the best known of all and is probably considered by most observers to have ushered in the era of satellite communications. This impression was a result of the tremendous impact upon the public by the first transmission of live television across the Atlantic Ocean. Telstar I was launched on July 10 1962 and on that same day live television pictures originating in the United States were received in France." Radio Communication Electron Tubes Damped-Wave Radio Telegraphy / Electron Tubes / Undamped-Wave Radio Communication
Scranton PA: International Textbook Company. Very Good. 1926. Hardcover. Graphs; This book is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean bright condition. There is some ground-in dust to the composite covers. The text pages are clean and bright. "Radio is the technology of using radio waves to carry information such as sound by systematically modulating properties of electromagnetic energy waves transmitted through space such as their amplitude frequency phase or pulse width. n 1 When radio waves strike an electrical conductor the oscillating fields induce an alternating current in the conductor. The information in the waves can be extracted and transformed back into its original form. Radio systems need a transmitter to modulate change some property of the energy produced to impress a signal on it for example using amplitude modulation or angle modulation which can be frequency modulation or phase modulation. Radio systems also need an antenna to convert electric currents into radio waves and radio waves into an electric current. An antenna can be used for both transmitting and receiving. The electrical resonance of tuned circuits in radios allow individual stations to be selected. The electromagnetic wave is intercepted by a tuned receiving antenna. A radio receiver receives its input from an antenna and converts it into a form that is usable for the consumer such as sound pictures digital data measurement values navigational positions etc." . The book and its contents are in mostly clean bright condition. There is some ground-in dust to the composite covers. The text pages are clean and bright. "In radio communications a radio receiver radio is an electronic device that receives radio waves and converts the information carried by them to a usable form. It is used with an antenna. The antenna intercepts radio waves electromagnetic waves and converts them to tiny alternating currents which are applied to the receiver and the receiver extracts the desired information. The receiver uses electronic filters to separate the desired radio frequency signal from all the other signals picked up by the antenna an electronic amplifier to increase the power of the signal for further processing and finally recovers the desired information through demodulation." .
