15 Holland Street Kensington W London. 1 August 1862. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In fair condition on lightly aged and worn paper. He begins: 'My dear Mrs. Roper - I have been rather long in fulfilling my promise to write - but I must lay all the blame on this most attractive International from which I can hardly tear myself away! My journey was a very pleasant one on Tuesday with agreeable fellow-passengers there was another Bouquet besides mine in the carriage - but tell dear Annie it would bear no comparison with mine! . Ah I do so long for you all to see this Exhibition - it is so delightful - tho' you must not expect to see the Building anything like the last - but it is very beautiful nevertheless - and so nicely ventilated that notwithstanding the brilliant sunshine and the crowds of people we have not found it too hot'. He explains that his party had 'intended to devote this day 1/2 crown day to the picture galleries as it is useless to attempt them on shilling days when they are so thronged but my friend who accompanies me is engaged so that we must put it off till tomorrow which is also a 1/2 crown day'. He explains that 'the first four in the week are shilling days' and that the following Wednesday 'there will be an addition of 3000 people from the Dockyards at Woolwich when the Queen is going to treat to a sight of it.' They have found the refreshments 'very nice and very moderate' but 'took care to have ours early 12.30! before the great rush of hungry people!' She will be 'enchanted with the sculpture - the tinted Venus is very beautiful - but I think I must give the preference to the pure white marble - the "Cleopatra" by Storey is very grand. L'etnologo le ha incontrate di nuovo nelle piantagioni di arance in Calabria, dove restano spesso bloccate per anni come addetti al raccolto, in condizioni di estrema precarizzazione. Mentre attendono nel Sud Italia la conclusione delle loro procedure d'asilo, esse vagano per le strade senza documenti o diritti. Le piantagioni vicine sono quasi sempre l'unica possibilità di trovare un lavoro che garantisca loro la sopravvivenza. Disprezzati dalla popolazione, ospitati in baraccopoli e lontani da qualsiasi cura medica, raccolgono arance per dodici ore al giorno. Per un massimo di 250 euro al mese, sempre che abbiano la "fortuna" di essere prelevati al mattino dai caporali. L'autore si è recato più volte a Rosarno, in Calabria, per documentare da vicino le condizioni di lavoro e di vita dei raccoglitori migranti e raccoglierne le testimonianze. Ne emerge un quadro scioccante: un vero e proprio caso di schiavitù nel bel mezzo dell'Europa.
