In this first full-length history of the Jicarillas from the American occupation of the Southwest to the 1970s Tiller emphasizes relations between the federal government and the tribe-the effects of enforced dependence and how the Jicarillas have survived-even flourished-in spite of it. Opening with an examination of the traditional culture and society of the two bands of Jicarillas-the mountain-dwelling Olleros and the plains-dwelling Llaneros-the author establishes the traits that more than any other have characterized them down to the present: adaptability determination to retain their homeland desire to be self-reliant. The theme of the Jicarillas' resilience runs throughout the story of their dispossession exile to an alien reservation and eventual return to their lands in northwestern New Mexico where poverty and neglect were to be their lot for many years. It was those lands rich in timber grazing resources and oil that served as the foundations for their remarkable recovery during the Indian New Deal of the 1930s and their ability to exercise today a large measure of autonomy. Solo a metà degli anni Cinquanta Germaine Tillion potrà tornare alla sua prima passione, a quegli studi etnografici in cui aveva avuto tra i suoi maestri Marcel Mauss e Louis Massignon che l'avevano condotta fin dal 1934 fra i berberi dell'Aurès, nel nord dell'Algeria. Nel 1966 pubblicherà questo libro sulle questioni dell'harem e dei rapporti di parentela nelle culture arabe del nord Africa. Sorretto dal continuo confronto con le tesi di Lévi-Strauss, il libro mette in particolare luce la condizione della donna, tocca la questione del velo, che tanto scalda il dibattito in Occidente, esamina le componenti religiose di queste culture che si affacciano sul Mediterraneo e rivelano insospettati legami culturali con l'Europa.
