Rites And Symbols Of Initiation: The Mysteries Of Birth And Rebirth
Harper & Row New York: 1975. Softcover. Fair condition. It is quite worn along the base of the spine. Takes one particular subject the almost universal prevalence in human culture of some sort of initiatory rite and custom and treats it in a way that is at once scholarly and interpretive. CRUZ TORRES MAReA LUZ & PAMELA MCELWEE EDITORS
Gender And Sustainability: Lessons From Asia And Latin America
University of Arizona Press Tucson: 2012. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. This is one of the first books to address how gender plays a role in helping to achieve the sustainable use of natural resources. The contributions collected here deal with the struggles of women and men to negotiate such forces as global environmental change economic development pressures discrimination and stereotyping about the roles of women and men and diminishing access to natural resourcesnot in the abstract but in everyday life. Contributors are concerned with the lived complexities of the relationship between gender and sustainability. Bringing together case studies from Asia and Latin America this valuable collection adds new knowledge to our understanding of the interplay between local and global processes. Organized broadly by three major issuesforests water and fisheriesthe scholarship ranges widely: the gender dimensions of the illegal trade in wildlife in Vietnam; women and development issues along the Ganges River; the role of gender in sustainable fishing in the Philippines; women's inclusion in community forestry in India; gender-based confrontations and resistance in Mexican fisheries; environmentalism and gender in Ecuador; and women's roles in managing water scarcity in Bolivia and addressing sustainability in shrimp farming in the Mekong Delta. Together these chapters show why gender issues are important for understanding how communities and populations deal daily with the challenges of globalization and environmental change. Through their rich ethnographic research the contributors demonstrate that gender analysis offers useful insights into how a more sustainable world can be negotiatedone household and one community at a time. Contributors: Stephanie Buechler Maria Luz Cruz-Torres Linda D'Amico Georgina Drew James Eder Lisa L. Gezon Pamela McElwee Neera Singh Hong Anh Vu Amber Wutich "Gender and Sustainability will interest gender and environment scholars easily serving as a resource for graduate-level or advanced undergraduate courses." Gendered Perspectives on International Development Resource Bulletin "This is a book that deserves to be read carefully by those engaging in recent iterations of sustainability science."Gender and Development "The consistently clear language makes the book appropriate for introducing undergraduates to the material as well as an enjoyable read for more experienced scholars."Gender Place and Culture "A particular strength of this volume is its focus on the many scales of interaction that link the global and the local especially the ways that different scales of activity may influence gender relations through transfers of ideas and power centers."David Griffith co-author of Fishers at Work Workers at Sea: A Puerto Rican Journey through Labor and Refuge University of Arizona Press, Tucson: 2012 hardcover

BRUCHAC MARGARET M.; MELISSA FAWCETT TANTAQUIDGEON ZOBEL FOREWORD
Savage Kin: Indigenous Informants And American Anthropologists
University of Arizona Press Tucson: 2018. Softcover. Brand new book. In this provocative new book Margaret M. Bruchac an Indigenous anthropologist turns the word savage on its head. Savage Kin explores the nature of the relationships between Indigenous informants such as Gladys Tantaquidgeon Mohegan Jesse Cornplanter Seneca and George Hunt Tlingit and early twentieth-century anthropological collectors such as Frank Speck Arthur C. Parker William N. Fenton and Franz Boas. This book reconceptualizes the intimate details of encounters with Native interlocutors who by turns inspired facilitated and resisted the anthropological enterprise. Like other texts focused on this era Savage Kin features some of the elite white men credited with salvaging material that might otherwise have been lost. Unlike other texts this book highlights the intellectual contributions and cultural strategies of unsung Indigenous informants without whom this research could never have taken place. These bicultural partnerships transgressed social divides and blurred the roles of anthropologist/informant relative/stranger and collector/collected. Yet these stories were obscured by collecting practices that separated people from objects objects from communities and communities from stories. Bruchac's decolonizing efforts include "reverse ethnography"painstakingly tracking seemingly unidentifiable objects misconstrued social relations unpublished correspondence and unattributed field notesto recover this evidence. Those early encounters generated foundational knowledges that still affect Indigenous communities today. Savage Kin also contains unexpected narratives of human and other-than-human encountersbrilliant discoveries lessons from ancestral spirits prophetic warnings powerful gifts and personal tragediesthat will move Native and non-Native readers alike. Margaret M. Bruchac is an assistant professor of anthropology and the coordinator of Native American and Indigenous Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. "Bruchac's work is exemplary demonstrating ways to restore looted artifacts to their rightful owners expand the anthropological canon to include indigenous ancestors and learn more democratic ways to construct and share knowledge going forward."Anthropological Quarterly "Her research is extraordinarily thorough involving archival and ethnographic sources and her analysis and writing are exceptionally engaging and sensitive."Choice "A must-read for anyone interested in gaining a critical understanding of the history of anthropologists' relationships with their research subjects and the unheralded contributions those people made to the work of preeminent scholars in the field."Joe E. Watkins University of Maryland "Through an astonishing amount of research Bruchac has brought to light important histories that have been glossed over and in some cases erased from the history of anthropology to its detriment."Susan Rowley University of British Columbia University of Arizona Press, Tucson: 2018 paperback
