He was also surprised to come across the fierce and feared headgunting Dyaks. However he soon came to know them sufficiently to record their ways of life and beliefs for this book. The Sociology of Corruption
Singapore: Donald Moore 1968. First edition. Hardcover. Good/good. What's interesting about this book is that weighty intellectual minds were worried about corruption in Malaysia more than 50 years ago. However Alatas does not come at the problem waving the red flag of the campaigner but rather as a concerned academic who tries to see the issue from both sides while making recommendations for the practice to be severely reduced if not stopped. 87 pages including a bibliography. Good Hardback in a Good Dust Jacket. First Edition Weight: 0.4 kg Post free within Malaysia The book has suffered from an attack of silverfish more obvious on the dust jacket than anywhere else. Indian Indenture in British Malaysia The Politics of Policy and Practice in the Straits Settlements
Leeds UK: Peepal Tree Press Ltd. 2008. First edition. Paperback. Near Fine. Chanderbali a Guyanan historian came to write this study after noting the similarities between the indenture system practiced by British planters in the West Indies and the system practiced in the early days of the British presence in Malaya. That was hardly surprising since some of the earlier planters in Province Wellesley a piece of land acquired by the British in 1800 from the Sultan of Kedah to produce food for neighbouring Penang were from the West Indies and Mauritius. This work fills a gap in migrant history scholarship since previous works on Indian migrant labour in Malay a have usually mentioned the indenture system and how it worked in passing. 232 pages. The contents include the following chapters I - Indian Indenture System Evolution and Structure II - Conflicting Interpretations of Indian Indenture III - The Straits Demand for Indian Indentured Labour IV - The Transition to Regulated Indenture V - Recruitment VI - The Emigration Process VII - The Conditions of Labour VIII - Wages IX - Housing and Health. There are also tables maps a glossary appendices a bibliography and an index Weight: 0.5kg. Torres Strait Islander Women and the Pacific War
Canberra: Aboriginal Studies Press. 1997. xv 271pp bibliography notes bw ills maps. Original pictorial card covers. As new. From 1942-45 Torres Strait islander women faced the fears of living on Australia's front line during the Pacific war. Some were forcibly evacuated with their children to the mainland where they found themselves still restricted as to where and how they could live. Others were left on their tiny islands deserted in the end by their government and church despite the constant threat of Japanese advance through the Torres Strait. Many of the women remember here that traumatic time: hiding from bombers and watching dogfights overhead struggling to find food and clothe their families and praying for the return of their menfolk and for peace again in their beloved island homes.
