‎Scarce second edition of Van Horne's famous ""Introductio"". Van Horne was a respected anatomist and appouinted professor of anatomy in Leiden. With the assistance of Swammerdam he investigated the ovaries and published his observations in ""Prodomus"" (which is present in the item offered). These observations played some role in the priority dispute between Regnier de Graff and Swammerdam. His Introductio (Microcoasmus) was much in demand and was translated into Dutch, German and French (offered here under the title ""Mikpotexnh"". - Waller: 4912.- Wellcome III, p. 301 a.‎

This was impotent as the observations conclusively established a relation between areas (localization) in the brain and their specific functions. Garrison & Morton 1419.‎

‎Journal der practischen Arzneykunde und Wundarzneykunst. Band 1-12.‎

‎Iena, Academischen Buchhandlung, 1795 - 1801. 8vo. Uniformly bound in 12 contemporary marbled paper-covered boards with black title-labels with gilt lettering to spines. Capitals with wear, otherwise a nice and clean set.‎

‎First edition of the first 12 volumes of Hufeland’s influential journal which became a platform for him to share his ideas and advancements in medical science, as well as to promote holistic and natural healing methods. The journal covered various topics related to medicine, surgery, pharmacology, and medical education and it played a key role in shaping medical discourse during its time. Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland was a prominent German physician who lived from 1762 to 1836. He was a pioneer in the field of holistic medicine and is best known for his work in the areas of preventive medicine and natural healing. Hufeland emphasized the importance of diet, exercise, and mental well-being in maintaining health, and he advocated for a balanced approach to medical treatment that included both traditional and alternative therapies. He also popularized the concept of ""macrobiotics,"" which focused on achieving harmony and balance in life to promote health and longevity. Hufeland's ideas had a significant influence on the development of modern holistic medicine and alternative health practices. The journal was published up to 1835‎

‎"HUSS, MAGNUS.‎

‎Alcoholismus Cronicus eller Chronisk Alkoholssjukdom. Ett Bidrag till Dyskrasiernes Kännedom: enligt egen och andres Erfarenhet. 2 Afdelingar (i.e. Two Parts). - [THE FIRST SCIENTIFIC TREATMENT OF ALCOHOLISM]‎

‎Stockholm, 1849-52. Bound with the original blue back wrapper (for the second part?) in a very nice recent greenish moiré-like half cloth with marbled paper over boads. Gilt lettering to spine. First and last leaf of the first part evenly browned. A vague, marginal damp stain to the second part. Overall very nice and clean. Possibly washed when bound. (6), VIII, (2), 194 pp. + (4), II, (IV), 215, (1), (, -errata) pp.‎

‎Exceedingly scarce first edition of this pioneering classic in alcohol-literature, the first work systematically classifying the physical and mental damages attributed to alcohol, thus for the first time treating alcoholism scientifically, and the work in which the word ""alcoholism"" is coined. “Magnus Huss… was a pioneer in alcohol research, and his most famous work “Alcoholismus Chronicus” in two parts is an international classic.” (Ars Medica Svecana – own translation from Swedish). As leading physician at the “Serafimerlasarettet”, Huss had ample opportunity of studying the physical, mental, moral, and social effects of alcohol abuse. These are the consequences that he scientifically both describe, analyze, and classify in the present treatise. “Alcoholismus Cronicus” provides the first scientific classification of the damage done by alcohol and constitutes a pioneering breakthrough that turned the field of alcohol research into a scientific one. Magnus Huss (1807-1890) occupies the same pioneering status within alcohol-research as Pasteur in bacteriology. Huss was professor of medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm (Sweden) and physician to the Swedish king. In 1853, he received the Monthya Price from the French Academy for his research in alcoholism. Andral, who was one of the people who had awarded Huss with this prestigious prize, said on the occasion: ""Magnus Huss has collected a great deal of material relating to chronic alcoholism, a condition rarely seen in France"", a quotation well describing the lack of scientific research of the field before Huss' work. With his thorough research, Huss succeeded in placing the treatment of alcohol addiction within the medical field and completely altered the way we view and treat the illness. The second part of the work begins with a bibliography of more than 100 works related to alcoholism , the first being from 1531. This clearly shows that Huss is not the first to describe physical and mental symptoms connected to alcohol abuse" but these earlier treatises are not systematic, and none of them provide the actual causes for the symptoms. Huss’ “Alcoholismus Chronicus”, however, for the first time systematically classifies the various kinds of damage done by alcohol, coins the term “alcoholism, and is the single most important treatise in the history of alcohol research. Waller 5011. - Ars Medica Svecana pp. 156-57‎

‎First appearance of this early treatise on delerium tremens. ""Delirium tremens was first described by Thomas Sutton in 1813. Sutton reported 22 cases of delirium tremens of whom only four cases died. He believed that the low mortality rate was due to the use of large doses of opium in stead of blood-letting... Hayward (1822) and Wake (1831) further described and analyzed cases of delirium tremens. In the early part of the twentieth century delirium tremens has been thoroughly described by, among others, Bonhoeffer (1901, 1905), and it is now described in all text-books of psychiatry and internal medicine."" ‎First edition of this groundbreaking work, which describes for the first time the use of electricity for treatment of paralysis, laying the foundation for the use of electricity in medicine and for what was later to be known as electroconvulsive therapy. By applying electroshocks with a Leyden jar, Jallabert discovered that he could stimulate muscle regeneration and blood increase in a paralyzed limb, describing this breakthrough discovery for the first time in the present work. ""After a succint account of what is known about electricity, Jallabert describes his observatuions on how electricity can stimulate muscles and reverse paralysis. Together with Guiot, a leading surgeon, he examines a locksmith called Nogues, and finds him paralysed on the right side as a result of an accidental blow to the head fourteen years before. The man could not move his arm, he had no sensation in it and he had no control over the fingers in his hand. Holding a Leiden jar in his healthy hand and touching it with his paralysed hand, Noguesd was treated with electric shocks for over an hour every day. Within two weeks an astonishing improvement in his condition was noted and three months later the patient had regained full use of his arm."" (Gedeon, Science and technology in Medicine, No. 19).""This comprehensive work embraces the knowledge of the time on electric phenomena and theory"" it has been frequently quoted. The author considers electricity to be a subtile, elastic fluid."" (Wheeler Gift No 349). Wellcome IV:342 (but only having the second edition, 1749)" Gedeon:19.‎

‎First printing of the paper in which Laveran - in detail - described the agents responsible for malaria - the discovery was first announced in a small note in ""Bulletin de l’Académie de Médecine"". On November 6th, 1880, while examining the blood of a patient, without any staining and using a x40 objective, he saw for the first time a number of filiform elements, flagellum-like, which moved with great vivacity around a pigmented, spherical body. Seventeen days after the discovery Laveran sent a note describing his discovery to the National Academy of Medicine of France. This discovery was exemplary in the simplicity of the means used and by the fact that Laveran's work went against all the theories then accepted by the greatest scholars of the time. Laveran was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine (1907) for the discovery of the agent of malaria. The offered issue contains another interesting paper ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL ""Sur un appareil permettant de déterminer, sans douleur pour le patient, la position d'un projectile de plomb ou d'autre métal dans le corps humain."", pp. 625-627 with 2 illustrations showing the electrical apparatus by which Bell tried to detect the bullit which murdered president Garfield. This is the first description of Bell's invention.‎

‎(Paris), 1959. 4to. No wrappers. Fine and clean. The paper: Pp. 1721-22. Entire issue offered pp.: (1597)-1732.‎

‎First printing of the seminal paper that first described the cause of Down's Syndrome, trisomy-21, or the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. ""Currently, Down syndrome (DS) is one of the most common birth defects, affecting about one in every 750 live births. John Langdon Down first described this condition in the medical literature in 1866, documenting the various symptoms associated with the syndrome but failing to determine their cause. In fact, the cause of DS remained unknown for nearly 100 years following Down's work. Then, in the 1950s [i.e. in the present paper], researchers finally determined the source of DS: the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21, a condition often referred to as trisomy 21.Since the discovery of trisomy 21, scientists have made great strides in Down syndrome research."" (Clare O'Connor, in: Nature Education).""As previously mentioned, almost 100 years elapsed between Down's medical description of DS and the discovery of the cause of this condition. But why was this the case? It was certainly not for lack of trying. Many theories for the cause of DS were put forth in the century after Down's publication. Some physicians even made the key observation that older mothers had a higherfrequency of DS babies, and they postulated that the condition was caused by what they termed ""uterine exhaustion."" Gradually, researchers narrowed in on the real cause of DS: achromosomal abnormality. In fact, researchers now realize that older mothers have more babies with DS because the frequency of meiotic nondisjunction increases in women with age.The reason that cytologists in the early twentieth century failed to correctly diagnose DS is almost certainly due to technical limitations. Chromosome 21 is the smallest human chromosome, and procedures for examining human chromosomes were still being developed during the first part of the century. Many early cytologists had, in fact, studied chromosomes from DS patients, but none had been able to detect a supernumerary copy of chromosome 21. A breakthrough finally occurred in 1956, when Joe Hin Tjio and Albert Levan described a set of experimental conditions that allowed them to correctly identify the number of human chromosomes as 46. Within three years of the publication of this groundbreaking work, Jerome Lejeune in France and Patricia Jacobs in the United States were able to identify a supernumerary copy of chromosome 21 in karyotypes prepared from DS patients. Trisomy 21 is now accepted to be the major cause of DS, accounting for about 95% of cases."" (Clare O'Connor, in: Nature Education).Garrison & Morton: 4962.5‎

‎First appearance of Danish professor in medicine Carl Levy's on the usefulness of Russian baths. Professor, Dr. Med. Carl Edvard Marius Levy (sometimes spelled ""Carl Eduard Marius Levy"" or in foreign literature ""Karl Edouard Marius Levy"", September 10, 1808 - December 30, 1865) was professor and head of the Danish Maternity institution inCopenhagen (Fødsels- og Plejestiftelsen).Professor Carl Braun in Vienna said about the Copenhagen hospital, that ""because this is the most appropriate and noteworthy newly constructed maternity hospital, in which every step has been taken to halt puerperal fever epidemics, we allow ourselves to estimate that in this new building under Levy's direction no puerperal fever epidemics will occur.""Professor Levy was an outspoken critic of Ignaz Semmelweis' ideas, that childbed fever was an iatrogenic disease. Semmelweis theorized that decaying matter on the hands of doctors, who had recently conducted autopsies, was brought into contact with the genitials of birthgiving women during the medical examinations at the maternity clinic. Semmelweis proposed a radical hand washing theory using chlorinated lime, now a known disinfectant, and demonstrated dramatic reductions in mortality rates.‎
