‎German translation of Bertin's Traité D'ostéologie (1754). Exupere Joseph Bertin (1712 - 1781) was a French anatomist born in Tremblay (Ille-et-Vilaine), Brittany. He was the father of cardiologist René-Joseph-Hyacinthe Bertin (1757-1828). He served as regent of the Académie Nationale de Médecine in Paris and was ""first physician"" to the royal army. He is remembered for his research on the renal system. His best known written work is in the field of osteology, Traité D'ostéologie (1754, 4 volumes).The columns of Bertin are named after him, as are ""Bertin's ossicles"" (sphenoidal conchae) and ""Bertin's ligament"" (iliofemoral ligament).‎

‎The uncommon first edition, first issue, of Rokitansky’s landmark work on anatomical pathology. Rokitansky is widely considered the founder of science-based diagnostics, a merit largely based on the present work" The number of original observations in the present work is staggering. Included here are the first differentiation between lobar and lobular pneumonia, the first pathological account of spondylolisthesis, the first accurate description of yellow atrophy of the liver and the correct classification of patent ductus arteriosis as a congenital lesion – all observations that helped the Vienna School (also known as The Second Viennese School of Medicine) to reblossom into world prominence. Virchow famously named him ""the Lineé of pathological anatomy"". “Rokitansky ranks with Morgagni as among the greatest of all writers on gross pathology. He is said to have performed over 30,000 autopsies himself. His ‘Handbuch’ was for many years pre-eminent among its contemporaries. He foresaw the eventual importance of chemical pathology, at that time non-existent.” (Garrison & Morton). “Rokitansky was a first class anatomist, not the least of his service to pathology being the development of anecropsy method which in its anatomical logic and comprehension of detail insured an inspection of every part of the body in every examination. […] After Rokitansky names of diseases, like pneumonia and typhoid fever, conveyed to the well trained medical graduate an anatomical picture and not as theretofore, a list of symptoms of varying complexity” (Long, A History of Pathology, p. 107). “Rokitansky extended Laennec’s description of emphysema, improved existing knowledge of pneumonia, noted the perforated gastric ulcer as a special type, and gave a classic description of acute yellow atrophy of the liver, also known as “Rokitansky’s disease.”. The first edition of his Handbuch attempted a revival of humoral pathology, based upon current physiological theory of a “blastemal” or primitive fluid substance from which formed elements were derived" under criticism from Virchow, who called Rokitansky’s hypothesis a “monstrous anachronism,” Rokitansky eliminated his humoral theories from the next two editions of the Handbuch” (Norman 1845). ‎Seminal first printing of the groundbreaking paper that founded the field of antidepressant medicine, being the paper that reported for the first time the first discovery in the antidepressant field, namely the first specific antidepressant drug. It is with the report of the present paper that isoniazide becomes the first antidepressant in clinical history, thus founding a field that the modern world could hardly be imagined without, sparking a kind of treatment that is now presumably the most frequently prescribed in the Western world. ""As far as can be ascertained, the present study is the first in which isoniazid has been employed in the treatment of anxiety states and psychoneurotic, agitated, and manic-depressive depressions."" (Present paper, p. 318).In 1951 a series of hydrazide derivatives was introduced for the treatment of tuberculosis, the best known of them being isoniazid and iproniazid. Isoniazid was not a newly discovered drug, having been synthesized in 1912, but its recognized success against tuberculosis was. The impact of the drug was truly remarkable and stories of the effect on patients came from various places, most dramatically from New York's Sea View Hospital. These reports captured the attention of the media"" e.g. ""Life"" magazine ran an article showing patients dancing in the wards. ""These articles caught the attention of many psychiatrists. Phyychiatrists throughout the United States were tempted to prescribe these compounds for mental health purposes, given the effects of these drugs to boost appetite, cause weight gain, increase vitality, and improve sleep. The conventional wisdom is that no indications emerged from any of these efforts.Stimulated by the reports of improved sleep and appetite by Robitzek et al. (1952) and probably the feature in ""Life"", Max Lurie and Harry Salzer made the first discovery in the antidepressant field in 1952. following the suggestions that isoniazid appeared to treat tuberculosis and enhance the sense of well-being of the patients receiving the drug, Lurie, like Jackson Smith thought isoniazid might be a useful agent to help depressed patients... Lurie was probably the person who coined the term ""antidepressant"" in 1952."" (Weissman: Treatment of Depression. Bridging the 21st Century, pp. 10-11).""On June 4, 1953, a paper was read before the section on nervous and mental diseases at the 102nd annual session of the American Medical Association in New York detailing the effects of isoniazid in forty-one patients suffering from anxiety and depression. Two-thirds of those to whom it was given improved, and among those improving were a number who had previously only responded to ECT. Improvement took up to three weeks to appear. The authors were Harry Slzer, an assistant professor of neurology at the Cincinatti College of Medicine, and Max Lurie, an instrutor in psychiatry at the same university. Both were attending psychiatrists at the Cincinatti General Hospital."" (Healy: The Antidepressant Era, p. 72). Salzer and Lurie thus became the first to recognize, test, and describe the effects of an actual, clinical, antidepressant drug (i.e. in the present paper). ""This report deals with the early results noted in a group of 41 patients, most of whom were suffering from depressive states of the psychoneurotic, agitated, or manic-depressive types, and one of whom had a pure anxiety state. They were given isoniazid, and the effect on their mental status, as well as on their various symptoms, was studied."" (Present paper, p. 318).The discovery of antidepressants must count as one of the most important discoveries for modern man. According to a government study, antidepressants have now become the most commonly prescribed drugs in the United States. They're prescribed more than drugs to treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, or headaches. In its study, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at 2.4 billion drugs prescribed in visits to doctors and hospitals in 2005. Of those, 118 million were for antidepressants. The same tendency occurs througout the rest of the Western World.‎

I modsætning til den samlede udgave fra 1577 (""Henrik Smids Lægebog""), blev disse udgivet separat, og er alle af største sjældenhed. De få eksemplarer, som har været udbudt på markedet de sidste 50 år, har næsten alle været ukomplette. De tre af værkerne er førsteudgaverne, mens ""En Bog om Pestilintzis Aarsage"" skulle, efter forfatterens egen oplysning på titelbladet, være anden udvidede udgave. ‎The rare first edition of Steno's early and first major discovery, being the findings of the 3 main Ducts and glands of the eye, the mouth and the nose, among these the first account of the excretory duct of the parotid gland now named ""Stensen's Duct"". He correctly stated that the true purpose of the glands was to secrete fluid and ""with [the present work] Nicolaus Steno had established the study of glands as a science"". (Snorrason). His careful dissections of animal, and later human, brains were revolutionary. He demonstrated that tears are secrated by specific glands, thus striking a deadly blow to the ancient notion of cerebral excretion, even disproving the speculations of scholars such as Descartes, who believed that the corpus pineale (a brain gland) was the connecting point between soul and body.Steno arrived in Holland in March 1660 and was given lodging by the city's physician Gerad Blaes (Latin: Blasius) who himself had studied in Copenhagen and was a friend of Thomas Bartholin. A year later Steno wrote in a letter to Bartholin: ""After I had been given leave by Blasius to dissect on my own in the museum, I bought a sheep's-head in order to examine the brain. I happened to decide to investigate first the course of the veins and arteries at the mouth by introducing a probe into the vessels. I suddenly discovered that the point of the probe was moving freely in a spacious cavity and struck with a ringing sound against the teeth. Surprised at this, I called my host to hear his opinion. Blasius first said that it was due to force, then that it was one of nature's frequent freaks, and finally he looked up Wharton's book, but found no explanation there"". Shortly thereafter, Steno repeated the investigation on a dog and confirmed, ""there was a duct leading from the gland by the ear to the oral cavity, of a similar kind to the duct from the submaxillary gland found by the English man Thomas Wharton (1610-1673) a few years previously and described in his book Adenographia 1656. Steno was now certain that the gland was a salivary gland and not, as Wharton said in his book and as had been believed for some 1500 year, a kind of sponge intended to absorb surplus materials from the hard rami of the fifth pair of nerves, carry these back to the veins, warm up the outer and inner ear, and fill up the hollow around them."" (Snorrason). ""This discovery led Stensen to consider every fluid in the body as a glandular secretion. He then found a series of glands furnishing fluid to each of the body cavities. He likewise sought the afferent and efferent ducts of secretion. Stensen still used the name ""lymph"" for all watery glandular secretions, because he was not yet able to differentiate between them and to specify them chemically and physiologically. In the course of this basic research Stensen presented in his Leiden dissertation new discoveries of glands in the cheeks" beneath the tongue" and in the palate, whose structure of veins, arteries, nerves, and lymph vessels he also described. In his Observationes anatomicae (1662), dealing with his new discoveries concerning the glands, he described the lachrymal apparatus in great detail."" DSB 13, 33.
