‎Kiøbenhavn, Høpfner, 1782. 4to. Uopskåret, ubeskåret. Lettere brunplettet. (8) pp.‎

‎Scarce first edition of this milestone in the history of medicine, the foundational work of modern epidemiology, which was the first to state the germ theory of infection. This epochal work ""establishes Fracastoro as one of the foremost scientists of all time, and earns him the title of founder of modern epidemiology. ""De contagione"" contains the first scientifically reasoned statement of the true nature of infection, contagion, and the germ theory of disease and is the foundation of all modern views on the nature of infectuous diseases... Fracastoro's influence is also clearly reflected in the work of such modern scientists as Louis Pasteur, Joseph Lister, and Robert Koch as they broadened and furthered man's knowledge of infectuous diseases."" (Heirs of Hippocrates). ""This book represents a landmark in the development of our knowledge of infectuous disease. Fracastorus was the first to state the germ theory of infection. He recognized typhus and suggested the contagiousness of tuberculosis. Haeser describes him as the ""founder of scientific epidemology""."" (Garrison & Morton).Faracstoro's theories on contagions and epidemics were far ahead of their time, but they were still widely respected. The magnificent theories here constitute the first correct illustrations of how contagions might spread: by simple contact as in scabies and leprosy"" by ""fomities"" or inanimate carriers, such as clothing or sheets" and at a distance, without direct contact or carriers, as in plague, smallpox, etc., attributing their transmission to the action of the air - and his ideas on the spreading and controlling of epidemics were of vital importance to Renaissance man and to the further development of our knowledge within this field. The work furthermore gives the first accurate account of typhys as well as several other contageous diseases, together with the affirmation of the contagiousness of tuberculosis. With this work, Fracastoro was also the first to enunciate the modern doctrine of the specific characters and infectious nature of fevers. In the most general sense Glauber sought to perfect nature for the enchancement of human life - to render useless things useful through the release of their hidden virtues. Such changes were effected in his laboratory primarely through the ""ripening"" powers of salt...Glauber prepared his ""Most secret salt"" by combining ammonia and salpeter, made from excrements and urine"" (DSB). - Ferguson I:p. 328.‎

‎Washington, The White House, 1962. Lex8vo. Typewritten manuscript with blue wrappers. Leaves stapled in left margin. A bit of sunning, mostly to wrappers. 59 pp.‎

‎Original White House Report on a various number of different drugs and their effect, usage and addictability. The report was created by the request of President John F. Kennedy and was meant to support the President's Advisory Commission on Narcotics and Drug Abuse.""Public concern over the problem of drug abuse, which had been relatively dormant during the 1940s and 1950s, flared again during the 1960s. The intensification of national concern resulted in increasing pressure for federal initiatives in the area. In response to this development, a White House Conference on Narcotics and Drug Abuse was convened in 1962, which resulted in the establishment of the President's Advisory Commission on Narcotics and Drug Abuse on January 15, 1963."" (Abadinsky. Drug use and abuse, p 65.)""The President released a document entitled ""Progress Report"" [The present report] which had been produced by eight doctors (three M.D.'s, four Ph.D.'s, and one who held both degrees) designated as an Ad Hoc Panel on Drug Abuse to confer with the White House Science Advisor and give advice on what should be done. The members of this panel could not be faulted for their collective eminence, but none of them had theretofore been closely identified with drug-abuse problems, so their findings were developed from what might be termed a slightly fresh viewpoint. They started from the hypothesis that nearly all compulsive drug abusers could be rehabilitated, by which they meant withdrawn from drugs and re-established in society, since they found drug abuse was inevitably a manifestation of some underlying psychological or physiological disorder.Accordingly they rejected proposals for imposing long prison sentences on drug offenders, on the one hand, and for placing addicts on any kind of maintenance regime, on the other. Instead they urged lengthy and extensive parole supervision in all cases, following the pattern that had been developed (not surprisingly) in California."" (King, The Drug Hang Up, p. 232).The report drew several conclusions regarding why people use drugs, one of them being: ""Growth of ""long-hair"" and beatnik cults which experiment with the use of psychotic drugs to achieve group cohesiveness and personal nirvana."" ‎Scarce offprint issue of Gullstrand's doctoral thesis on the astigmatism, a visual defect that leads to blurred vision. This is Gullstrand's first published work on optics (geometric and physiological) and even though self-taught he made many new discoveries on the physiological aspects of the eyes which eventually in 1910 made him a Nobel Laureate in Medicine: ""for his work on the dioptrics of the eye""""""Allvar Gullstrand's greatest achievements lie in the field of ophthalmological optics, the study of the human eye as an optical system. This study engendered his interest in geometrical optics. He then drew the attention of the optical designers to several misconceptions and so made important contributions to this field as well.Gullstrand started his work in ophthalmology with a paper on the astigmatism of the cornea. He became interested in the accommodation mechanism of the human eye and in an exact theory discussed the influence which the layers of the crystalline lens play. This was a difficult mathematical problem which had not been attacked in detail before. It led to the conception of a new and more accurate model of the human eye, a big step beyond Helmholtz. This is described in Gullstrand's masterly commentaries on the occasion of his reediting Helmholtz' Handbook of Physiological Optics. These commentaries contain by far the clearest and best description of all of Gullstrand's ideas on geometrical and physiological optics.Gullstrand represents a scientist of very rigorous standards, and as such, he was highly respected by his peers for his intelligence and integrity. His advice was widely sought, even outside his special sphere of interest"" among other honors, he was a member and late president of the Nobel Prize committee."" (DSB)‎

‎First printing of Hald's seminal paper in which he first introduced antabuse in the treatment of alcoholism. Antabuse (also known as disulfiram) was the first drug to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treatment of alcohol dependence. Today it is the most widely used drug to prevent alcoholism and it is estimated that some 120,000 persons throughout the world take antabuse each year.""In 1945 Danish researchers observed that the substance caused very unpleasant physiological effects in persons who had consumed alcohol. A few years later this chance observation was turned into a profitable production of pills used to combat alcoholism (antabuse = anti-abuse)."" (Kragh, From Disulfiram to Antabuse: the Invention of a Drug). The discovery of Antabuse was essentially an accident since it was intended to provide a remedy for parasitic infestations: ""Copenhagen's Dr. Erik Jacobsen, 45, likes to try out new drugs on himself before giving them to his patients. One night before going to a dinner party he swallowed a couple of pills made of tetraethylthiuram- disulfide"" they were supposed to be good for intestinal worms. To his surprise, Dr. Jacobsen found that any form of alcohol revolted him. When he sipped even a small glass of beer, his face got red, his heart started to pound, and he had trouble getting his breath."" (Time, December 6, 1948)""Antabuse [trade name for disulfiram], a chemical which prevents the body from fully processing alcohol. It does this by blocking the action of aldehyde dehydrogenase, a key enzyme in the metabolic pathway of ethanol, and thereby causing a build-up of the toxic by-product acetaldehyde, with extremely unpleasant consequences for patients. People with active disulfiram in their bodies experience flushing, nausea and high blood pressure soon after drinking."" (Raikhel, Images from the history of disulfiram treatment) ""The most important journal for the dissemination of knowledge concerning the actions of antabuse in the organism was the Acta Pharmacologica et Toxicologica, an international journal founded in 1945 and edited by Scandinavian scientists. The fact that it was published in Copenhagen and that Jacobsen was among the editors made it an ideal journal for publishing new research related to antabuse. For example, Vol. 4 of 1948 included two substantial papers by Hald and Jacobsen on the formation and action of acetaldehyde" and their collaborator Erik Rasmussen, a pharmacologist associated with Medicinalco, reported his investigations of the action of the antabuse-alcohol reaction on the blood circulation and respiration. ‎First edition of Hannover's important work in which he discovered Lipofuscin, described as brown-yellow pigment in neurons. The deposition of the pigment in the cytoplasm of the neurons is one of the consistent age-related cytological changes, although it is found in myocardium and skeletal muscle as well.In order to isolate it Hannover used his famous method by chromatic acid for fixation of tissues in histology and indispensable in the fixation of nervous tissue, invented by himself.‎

‎Original off-print of Spearman and Hart's groundbreaking paper on general ability, which created a conceptual framework for factor analysis and played an enormous role in IQ-testing, with an original handwritten and signed presentation-inscription from Spearman to Richard Goldschmidt (fellow psychologist and director of the Institute for Experimental Psychology at the University of Münster), expressing friendly remembrance of the Berlin congress 1912. ""Spearman, with a collaborator, Hart, pioneered the use of the pattern of correlations between a set of measures to determine the number of abilities (Hart & Spearman, 1912). The tetrad difference criterion could test if a single common factor (g, or general ability, presumably) could account for individual differences on the measures. If the tetrad differences were zero, then a single common factor was supported, but if not, then it was unclear how many common factors were needed."" (Susan E. Embretson: The Second Century of Ability Testing: Some Predictions and Speculations, 2001, p. 11) Charles Edward Spearman (1863 - 1945) was a famous English psychologist known both for his work in statistics, but primarily for his work on human intelligence. He was a pioneer of factor analysis, he gave name to the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and did seminal work on models for human intelligence, including his theory that disparate cognitive test scores reflect a single General intelligence factor, and he famously coined the term ""g- factor"". The g-factor, also known as General intelligence, refers to the existence of a broad mental capacity that influences performance on cognitive ability measures. Terms such as intelligence, IQ, general cognitive ability, and general mental ability are today used interchangeably to mean the same thing as general intelligence or g-factor. ""Charles E. Spearman, in full Charles Edward Spearman, (born September 10, 1863, London, England-died September 17, 1945, London), British psychologist who theorized that a general factor of intelligence, g, is present in varying degrees in different human abilities. While serving as an officer in the British army (1883-97), Spearman came to believe that any significant advance in philosophy would come about mainly through psychology. Over the next 10 years he worked intermittently with Wilhelm Wundt, the founder of experimental psychology, at the University of Leipzig, and he took his Ph.D. there. He joined the faculty of University College, London (1907), and was professor there from 1911 to 1931.Spearman's attempt to establish general, fundamental laws of psychology was based on his statistical work in determining correlations among mental abilities, reflected in his classic paper, "" 'General Intelligence,' Objectively Determined and Measured"" (1904). He sought to interpret correlations among several variables on the basis of a specific factor for each variable and a factor common to all. Because measures of seemingly different mental abilities consistently indicate correlations, he concluded that the prevalence of positive correlations must result from the general factor, g. By 1912 he and a coworker had developed an order of correlation coefficients separating various performances into the general factor, g, and varying specific factors, s1, s2, and so on."" (Encycl. Britt.). The present paper is of the utmost importance, as it is here that Spearman, in collaboration with Hart, develops a conceptual framework for factor analysis, pioneering the use of the pattern of correlations in order to determine the number of abilities, one of the fundamental principles for psychometric methods.‎

‎First edition of Helmont’s landmark work, in which he discovered gas. His experiment on a willow tree has been considered among the earliest quantitative studies on plant nutrition and growth and constitutes a milestone in the history of biology. ""Helmont was one of the founders of gases, and indeed invented the word ‘gas'. He introduced the gravimetric idea in the analysis of urine.” (Garrison & Morton). “In Medicine, he introduced the examination of the specific gravity of urine for diagnostic purposes. He investigated the fluids in the human body and advanced the study of digestion and other physiological changes by discovering acid digestion in the stomach, coming close to identifying gastric acid with hydrochloric acid some two hundred years before the actual discovery of this fact. He also appreciated the significance of bile in the gut digestion. Helmont’s significance in the development of chemistry is perhaps even greater"" he was the first to use the term ‘gas’. He realized that ‘gas’ was distinct from air and water vapour, and he distinguished the ‘gases’ derived from various sources, including that which we call carbon dioxide.” (PMM 135). Edited by his son and published posthumously, the present work established his name as one of the founders of biochemistry: “His discovery of digestive juices in the stomach and intestine, and especially his first use of the specific gravity of urine for diagnostic purposes, mark him as a man of no insignificant importance in the history of medicine”. (Heirs of Hippocrates) Johann Baptist von Helmont (1577-1644) was a Flemish chemist, physiologist, and physician known for his pioneering work in early chemistry and medicine. He is often considered one of the founders of modern chemistry and was a significant figure in the transition from alchemy to chemistry: ""Helmont devoted his life to exploring the first principles of nature through chemistry. He is best remembered as the discoverer of gas, a term he coined to describe the 'specific smokes' that remain after the combustion of solids and fluids" among the gases he identified were carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, chlorine gas and sulphur dioxide. He denied that metals dissolved in acid were either destroyed or transmuted, stating that such metals were recoverable in their original quantities, and correctly identifying the process of precipitation. Like Paracelsus, he rejected traditional humoral pathology and advocated an ontological concept of disease, regarding each disease as a specific entity caused by a specific pathogenic agent. He demonstrated that acid is the agent in animal digestion and came near to identifying it as hydrochloric acid" he also identified the causes of asthma and correctly described fever as a part of the body's natural healing process.” (Norman 1048) Though separately paginated, 'Opuscula medica inaudita' is considered a part of the whole volume. Originally published as a separate work in 1644, 'Opuscula medica inaudita' contains reprints of Helmont's treatises on the stone, on fevers, on the errors of humoral pathology, and on the plague"" (Norman 1048).'Ortus Medicinae' was translated into English by Christopher Packe in 1662. ‎First edition of Henle's landmark work in which he ""laid down postulates on the aetiological relation of microbes to disease which became fundamentals of bacteriology and which did much to check the reckless speculation which had arisen regarding micro-organism. Koch later developed these postulates"" (Garrison-Morton 2533). Henle became one of the greatest histologist and one of the finest anatomists of any area. ""His importance to the development of histology is comparable to that of the Renaissance master Andreas Vesalius on gross anatomy."" (Encyclopedia Britannica) ""The significance of Henle's book lies in its long opening essay 'Von den Miasmen und Contagien,' in which Henle formulated, on the basis of deductive reasoning, his conviction that living organisms were the cause of contagious and infectious diseases. Drawing upon a wide body of work performed by other researchers on the origin of infectious diseases, such as Bassi's recent demonstration of the parasitical nature of muscardine disease of silkworms, Henle argued that infectious agents had to be organic in nature, since they appeared to multiply from the moment of entering the body (a statement supported by the fact that a certain period of incubation usually precedes the outbreak of disease), and only organic life has the property of growth. The fact that infectious agents could be destroyed by heat and disinfectants also suggested their animate nature. Henle assumed that each infectious disease had its own etiology, but realized that such views would be difficult to prove"" he therefore proposed that an agent constantly found in association with a particular disease be isolated and tested in its isolated state to see whether it could produce the disease. 'This approach to the proof of the germ theory Henle communicated to his pupil Robert Koch and was, forty years later, to become one of the cornerstones of classical bacteriology under the name of ""Koch's postulates"" ' Foster ""He laid down postulates on the aetiological relation of microbes to disease which became fundamentals of bacteriology.""
